1997 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution - An Unappreciated Dakar Raider
It’s no secret that Mitsubishi is a pale shadow of its former self. Having numerous successes in rallying, the brand has switched to making bland, cheaply-made crossovers and compact cars. Although Mitsubishi currently finds itself in a state of survival (they put the Eclipse name on a crossover), things were quite different in the 1990s. Not long ago, we talked about the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse Ralliart, which was essentially the two-door “EVO” everyone wanted but never got. But long before it, there was this – the short-wheelbase-only Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution. And there’s a lot to say about it.
2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse Ralliart - What Mitsubishi’s Sports Car Should Have Been
The Mitsubishi Eclipse was one of the most praised compact Japanese sports coupes. Sadly, the third generation of the car (2000-2005) was a letdown, compared to the success of the previous two. The fourth-generation was significantly better, but shared too many similarities with the previous model, like the lazy transversely-mounted V-6, which at least had power this time and the front-wheel-drive layout.
Although the 3.8-liter 24-valve SOHC V-6 had a decent output, everyone wanted it to be the sleeker two-door equivalent of the Lancer Evolution. This meant a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and all-wheel-drive. Apparently, the specialists from Mitsubishi’s Ralliart department thought the same, which is why they got to work on making the Eclipse we all wanted. This resulted in the, introduced at the 2005 NAIAS, Mitsubishi Eclipse Ralliart Concept.
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander
Mitsubishi revealed the 2022 Outlander which marks its fourth-generation in the U.S. It comes with a whole lot of changes on the outside and under the skin. The flagship vehicle rides on a new platform, is powered by a new engine, and is redesigned on the outside and inside. While there is only one engine and transmission option, you can have it with either a two-wheel-drive or a four-wheel-drive layout. The 2022 Outlander will arrive at the dealerships in April 2021.
Everything about the Tesla Model Y looks like the car of the future. From its pod shape, to its silent but explosive acceleration, to its all-encompassing infotainment screen with no physical buttons, the electric-car maker’s new entry-level crossover is more about sensibly reducing gasoline usage. It gives you a peek into the decades to come, and it gives you a rollicking good time while you do it. It’s not just an electric car, but a special vehicle that triggers a powerful emotional response. This is one way to electrify an SUV.
Then there’s Mitsubishi’s way: the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport PHEV. All-electric cars eventually run out of charge, even long-range models like Teslas. So Mitsubishi made a plug-in hybrid whose gasoline engine can help out when you use up the battery or need more power. To keep costs down, the battery isn’t huge and the motors aren’t wildly powerful. And Mitsubishi already makes many gas-powered crossovers, so rather than wasting resources to develop a new one, it retrofitted electric components into its flagship model, the compact Outlander.
The result is a left-brain approach to the segment — the Outlander PHEV makes perfect sense, but it’s an improved present rather than the future. At best, you’ll feel something between mildly impressed and grudgingly accepting. It’s hard to imagine falling in love.
2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has long been one of the most underrated compact crossovers in the market. It’s not going to win any "best-of" awards anytime soon, but the crossover can hold its own, as long as people notice it. Perhaps the arrival of the new Eclipse Cross will help the crossover earn more credibility than it has received.
This latest batch of spy photos of the model heavily wrapped in camouflage gives us an idea of what to expect visually from the Eclipse Cross. But that’s the extent of it, at least for now. More details should arrive as we get closer to the updated Eclipse Cross’ launch sometime at the end of the year. The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be badged as a 2021 model.
2020 Mitsubishi Super Height K-Wagon Concept
The 2020 Mitsubishi Super Height K-Wagon is a concept car that the Japanese firm unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The show car previews Mitsubishi’s next generation of Kei wagons, most likely a replacement for the eK model sold on the Japanese market. The 2020 Super Height K-Wagon is a typical Kei wagon, featuring a boxy, tall body and bold styling features typical to these Japan-specific vehicles.
2020 Mitsubishi Mi-Tech Concept
One could argue that Mitsubishi is King of ridiculous concepts with at least one showing up to every auto show, and the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show is no different as Mitsubishi has introduced the Mi-Tech Concept. This concept is a futuristic take on the Dune Buggy (will we even have these in the future?) with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that’s paired with, I kid you not, a gas turbine engine. Now we know what those weird fans that we saw in the teasers are for. It also represents a new take on Mitsubishi’s grille design and, while it does look ridiculous in some respects, it’s not all fantasy and dreams. 2019 Mitsubishi L200 Series 6
When you’re in the market for a new car, a Mitsubishi vehicle is not generally your first choice. However, it does not mean that the Japanese brand is not doing well here in the States. In fact, Mitsubishi actually outsold Land Rover, Mini, and Volvo in 2018. Maybe it is some kind of sorcery, or Mitsubishi has sprayed some sort of invisible ink, we don’t know, but the Japanese giant has managed to move 118,074 cars in 2018 - all of it without socializing at auto-show gatherings or sponsoring many events. But, this is not the case in the U.K. The company is doing pretty well there and even sells a pickup truck called the L200. Mitsubishi has been producing the L200 pickup truck since 1978; under different monikers, though. The company has launched the sixth-generation now and it looks like a well-rounded package. Will the L200 Series 6 be able to hold its “fort(e)” in the highly competitive market?
2020 Mitsubishi ASX
The current-generation Mitsubishi ASX keeps on chugging along. First introduced in 2010, Mitsubishi’s never-say-die crossover is back for another go at a segment that, on the surface, has passed it by a long time ago. But give credit to Mitsubishi. As dated as the ASX is — it received a facelift in 2015 — Mitsubishi believes that it can still print money, and as long as that’s the case, who are we to argue? And so, the 2020 ASX has arrived with another extensive facelift that, at the very least, gives the crossover a fighting chance at staying relevant in a market that has become increasingly competitive in recent years. It’s not just about staying relevant, though. Mitsubishi needs the 2020 ASX to hold the fort until the automaker launches its wave of new models under the Nissan-Renault banner. Can the 10-year old ASX do it? It better.
2019 Mitsubishi Triton Absolute Concept
Introduced at the Bangkok Motor Show, the Mitsubishi Triton Absolute Concept truck is a proposed rugged and performance-orientated off-roader equipped with beefed-up fenders, 2-inches of extra ground clearance, and many off-road worthy additions. Although only a concept, the Triton Absolute gives us a glimpse into what may well become the competitor to the trucks like the Ford Ranger Raptor or the Toyota Hilux Rugged X. While the fate of its production rests in the hands of the interested public, the Triton (L200) Absolute may present the starting point for development of the sporty, hardened version of the next generation Triton. The name Absolute evokes clear notes of enthusiasm and playfulness that characterizes all modern off-road-centric trucks. Unfortunately, even if it reaches production, the Mitsubishi Triton Absolute will not be available in the U.S.
2019 Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Concept
Mitsubishi is presenting a new SUV concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Called the Engelberg Tourer Concept, the all-electric prototype is the latest concept salvo from the Japanese automaker. It arrives almost two years after the automaker unveiled the Mitsubishi e-Evolution electric SUV at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. While it doesn’t directly point to a specific electric SUV model, the Engelberg Tourer Concept is a showcase model that highlights the advancements Mitsubishi has made in the field of electrification. As a fixture in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mitsubishi is now in a solid position to advance its electrified plans for the future. It’s unclear if the Engelberg Tourer Concept is a part of these plans, but with the model debuting in Geneva, it’s safe to say that the concept will play a role in how the company’s electrification plans take shape.
2019 Mitsubishi Lancer Edition R by Dytko and Proto Cars
Polish company Dytko Sport, who specializes in building parts for Mitsubishi Lancer Evo rally cars, created what can only be called the Lancer Evo XI. Partnering with the company Proto cars, Dytko Sport utilized the Dynamic Shield design philosophy of the latest Mitsubishi line of vehicles and slapped the parts on the Evo X. I can only tell you this - it looks the business. While the full reveal is still a few days away, the officially named Lancer Edition R has already gained serious Internet traction and fame, even waking up dreamy Lancer Evo X enthusiasts in the process. The stories about the comeback of the Lancer name are already swamping the Internet, but I can tell you right away that the only way Lancer Evo will ever come back is in the form of a Crossover. Nevertheless, Dytko Sport obviously formulated something awesome that undoubtedly took some time to build.
The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton Teaser Shows Off an Outlander-Inspired Face
Mitsubishi has been a silent spectator all this while. It’s almost like the Japanese automaker is happy in its own shell, least bothered about what’s going on around it. However, it decided to make a little sound now. Mitsubishi has released the first teaser image of the facelifted Triton, while at the same time commemorating its 40th anniversary in truck manufacturing.
2020 Mitsubishi Lancer Cross
As the SUV market is growing larger by the year, more and more automakers are giving up on SUVs to make crossovers. Ford has already announced plans to drop almost every nameplate that’s not a crossover in the U.S. soon, and Mitsubishi seems to follow the same path. Having turned the Eclipse sports car into a crossover, the Japanese firm wants to do the same with the Lancer.
In 2017, Mitsubishi launched the Eclipse Cross, a compact crossover that slots between the Outlander Sport and the Outlander. Previewed by the XR-PHEV concept, this new hauler borrowed its name from an iconic sports car that Mitsubishi built between 1989 and 2011 in Illinois. With the iconic Lancer discontinued in 2017 after no fewer than 44 years on the market, the Japanese carmaker is pondering a revival of the name for a new crossover.
Rumors of this radical change have been flying around for a few years now, and Mitsubishi confirmed earlier in 2018, through COO Trevor Mann, that the next-gen Lancer doesn’t have to be "a very conventional hatchback." "We’re thinking quite radically," he added, hinting that the Lancer name may join the Eclipse on the SUV market. It remains unknown when it will happen, but a new rendering Tigran Lalayan, a designed from Pininfarina, gives us a look at what the Lancer Cross might look like.

2018 Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian SVP II
Introduced all the way back in 1978, the Mitsubishi L200 is now in its fifth-generation, having been redesigned most recently in 2015. Although anonymous in the U.S. beyond the Ram models based on it back in the 1980s, the L200 is a popular truck in emerging markets from Asia and posts good sales in some European markets too. The current L200 is also the basis of the Fiat Fullback, Italy’s first big truck in years. The L200’s increasing success in Europe prompted Mitsubishi to create a limited-edition version through its Special Vehicle Project (SVP) division.
Based on the Barbarian Double Cab trim and dubbed SVP II, this limited-edition truck builds on the success of the first SVP version, launched in 2017. Much like its predecessor, it gains extra standard features in the tech department, but it also stands out from the crowd thanks to special color schemes with striking accents. The bad news, beyond the fact that the L200 is not available in the United States, is that the SVP II can’t be purchased outside the United Kingdom. 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Less than four months after the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV arrived on U.S. shores in December 2017, Mitsubishi is launching an updated version at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland this March. The updates focus on increased efficiency from this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, but visual updates and interior improvements are also made.
Mitsubishi will announce the full details on March 6, but we already have a good understanding of the changes coming for 2019. The U.S. is expected to get this new model, too, though it might not happen until 2020.
