The Nissan Navara, the global version of the Frontier, is getting a new special edition package with the help of Salomon, a well-known mountain sports brand. The truck builds off the mid-grade Tekna trim level and comes equipped with several unique appearance upgrades both inside and out. Don’t mistake this for a mundane special edition, though, as Nissan is only building 500 examples and will be giving a £250 voucher for Salomon gear, roughly worth $386 at today’s exchange rates.

Salomon edition Navaras are easy to spot thanks to the Salomon logo on the doors, hood and tailgate, along with the chrome door handles, chrome fog light rings, and a chrome accent bar along the front valance.

Nissan is also making the Salomon edition more attractive with the pricing as well. The automaker says it would normally cost more than £1,300 ($2,000) to add the extra options included with the truck, but customers are only getting charged £750 ($1,150) over the Tekna trim level. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Here is where most of the changes have taken place. The special edition adds Salomon badges on the hood, front doors, and tailgate, along with adding several chrome bits on the door handles and front bumper. Additionally, the Salomon badges are available in four colors, including Metallic Black, Twilight Grey, Starburst Silver, and Alabaster White.

Otherwise, the Salomon edition looks otherwise the same as a regular Navara. The truck’s design may be aging, but it still looks good. That’s especially true thanks to its roof rack and side steps.

Like the regular Navara or Frontier, this truck offers the same short bed design with built-in cargo ties and rack system. This brings added functionality right front the factory.

The Navara Salomon builds off of the Tekna trim level, meaning the truck comes with plenty of features. Those used to the U.S.-spec Frontier will be jealous of the Navara’s interior. An update has increased the truck’s refinement and ergonomic layout. A new center stack holds an updated infotainment system and dual zone HVAC controls. Down low lies the 4WD controls, along with seat heaters and traction control. The driver’s gauge cluster is also fancier, with more detailing and a white-on-black color scheme.

The Salomon package adds chrome door tread plates complete with the Salomon logo and special floor mats.

Nothing changes under the Navara’s hood, so the same 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine comes standard. It produces 190 PS, or 187 horsepower and comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic can be ordered as well. The Salomon comes standard with 4WD with its electronic transfer case. This part time system sends power to the rear wheels until traction is lost. The system can then automatically engage the front axle. A low range gear set is selectable for hard-core off-road situations where the truck must traverse steep hills or trudge through thick mud.

The truck offers a payload capacity of 1,250kg, or 2,755 pounds while it can tow up to 2,600kg, or 5,730 pounds.

For those who want more, Nissan offers the automatic transmission, and the Connect Premium package as options, with the latter including navigation, the 9GB Nissan Music Box, DVD playback, and the rear-view camera.

The truck offers multiple cab and bed configurations as well. A new interior takes after Toyota’s current styling and includes a split-level dash with plenty of controls.

Under the hood are two engine options. The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder carries over from the previous generation New for 2016 is the 3.5-liter V-6 derived form other V-6 engines in the Toyota lineup. This mill runs an Atkinson combustion cycle that helps improve power and fuel economy. Horsepower is hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to be more than the outgoing 4.0-liter V-6.

The Salomon special edition offers some interesting upgrades for those looking to tackle a snowy hillside this winter. The voucher for Salomon gear is just the icing on the cake of a decent truck, though the Navara is destined for replacement in the near future. Regardless, the truck still gives customers plenty of functionality and reliability in a proven chassis. The 2.5-liter turbodiesel might be a bit underpowered, but it does provide decent fuel economy and pulling power.

Overall the truck is a cool addition to the Navara lineup and its very limited run of only 500 units is sure to catch some attention.

This is complemented by unique Salomon branding on the front, side and rear of the vehicle which is available in Metallic Black, Twilight Grey, Starburst Silver or Alabaster White.

Moving inside, the Navara is complemented by Salomon entry guards, a metal plaque and Salomon floor mats. The value for all of this additional equipment would total over £1,300, however, the Navara Salomon costs just £750 more than the equivalent Tekna model giving the customer a saving in the region of £550. Prices start from £27,845 OTR and each Navara Salomon retail customer will get a £250 voucher to spend on Salomon gear.
