The Nissan Micra is a good subcompact car that Nissan has relied on to compete against the likes of the Ford Fiesta and the Honda Jazz. It’s certainly made a name for itself in its segment, but the last thing you’d probably associate with the Micra is a premium sound system company like Bose. Then again, the auto industry is a business of never-ending surprises, and we were treated to one such surprise at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Nissan brought with it the Micra Bose Personal Edition, a special edition iteration of the subcompact car that was developed to celebrate the collaboration between Nissan and, you guessed it, Bose.

There is some initial surprise in seeing a car like the Micra get the full Bose treatment, but once that first reaction wears off, you’ll be happy to know that the Micra Bose Personal Edition is actually a pretty interesting offering. Sure, Bose is heavily involved, particularly when it comes to the car’s sound system, but the car isn’t just about Bose either. It also has a choice of unique paint colors and a wide range of added accessories courtesy of the car’s very own personalization program.

Yep, the Nissan Micra has its own version of Porsche Exclusive or McLaren Special Operations, relative, of course, to the quality and price point of its segment. Oh, and while we’re at it, the Micra Bose Limited Edition also has a trove of tech and standard equipment, all thanks to the fact that the whole run of limited edition models – 3,000 in total – are based on the range-topping Tekna trim.

As far as cars with personalities are concerned, the Nissan Micra Bose Personal Edition makes no bones about what makes it special. You can point to the fancy-schematic color scheme or the aforementioned menu of tech and equipment, but at the end of the day, this limited run version of the Micra is all about Bose.

What makes the Nissan Micra Bose Personal Edition so special

Believe it or not, but there are a lot of things about the Nissan Micra Bose Personal Edition that makes it, well, special.

There’s the choice of two colors – Enigma Black or Gunmetal Grey – that would’ve been fine on their own, except that Nissan added some flavor to them with the bright Energy Orange trim on the hood, roof, side mirrors, side skirts, and wheel inserts of the car. Together with the special badging on the B-pillar that lets everyone know that this model is a Bose Personal Edition, the whole exterior treatment of this limited run model brings out some needed life and personality to the subcompact hatchback.

There’s also the predominantly black interior, which is jolted to life by a handful of orange accents, particularly on the seats, dashboard, and center console. If the upgrades were left like this, it would’ve already deserved a special edition label, albeit under a different name. Energy Orange Limited Edition, perhaps?

Seeing as this is more than just that, though, the highlight of the Micra Bose Personal Edition is the involvement of Bose, which obviously leads us to the car’s audio system. In it, we see six speakers that work in concert with Bose’s latest signal processing technology to enhance the whole system and give owners what Marc Mansell, VP at Bose Automotive Systems, describes as a “superior, full-customizable audio experience unlike anything else available today.” There obviously are some caveats in that statement, but the point Mansell is making is as clear as the booming base that’s going to come out of that stereo: no other subcompact car has the same kind of audio system technology as the Micra Bose Personal Edition.

The fact that Bose is present in this special edition Nissan Micra speaks loudly to the appeal of the car. All that said and we haven’t even mentioned the treasure trove of tech and equipment that the car is also drowning in. It’s got Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition, Traffic Sign Recognition, High Beam Assist, and Intelligent Lane Intervention, not to mention extra options like heated front seats, a spare tire, and even Nissan’s very own Around View Monitor.

About the only thing that remains status quo on this model is the engine. For anybody who’s interested in this section of the car, the Micra Bose Limited Edition will be available in both the turbocharged 0.9-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine and the 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, both of which carry a staggering output of… 90 horsepower.

Lack of “oomph” notwithstanding, the features included in the Nissan Micra Bose Personal Edition all speak to the kind of exclusivity it has. It may be a surprise that Nissan and Bose picked the Micra as the model it wanted to work on, but the finished product definitely validates that decision. Don’t think too long and hard about getting one though because Nissan’s building this special edition Micra in limited quantities. Only 3,000 examples will be made, and all of them will be available in Europe beginning in the summer of 2017. Pricing details will also arrive soon, possibly close to when the limited edition car hits dealerships across the Old Continent.
