What makes the 2022 Nissan Frontier Project 72X by Nissan Design America special?

The first of the three concepts is named Project 72X was built on the 2022 Frontier Crew Cab S 4x4 grade. It pays tribute to the legendary Datsun 720.} Also known as the "Lil Hustler," the 720 was introduced in 1979 as a successor to the 620. It shortly became the first vehicle assembled by Nissan in the United States at the Smyrna (Tennessee) Vehicle Assembly Plant in 1983.

For the U.S. market, the 720 was offered in the Regular Cab and King Cab models, both 2WD and 4WD configurations. It was designed as a bare-bone, affordable truck, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.

The concept launched at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show features a gray exterior finish, combined with stripes and graphics in white, gray, and black. It sits on a set of white-painted steel wheels wrapped in PRO-4X tires. The concept also features a 2.5-inch lift kit with adjustable front upper suspension arms and a sport bar behind the cab.

No changes were announced under the hood, so expect the concept to feature the same 3.8-liter V-6 engine that delivers 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque.

The Nissan Frontier Project 72X will be displayed at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show along with two other concepts based on the pickup truck.
