2021 Nissan Maxima 40th Anniversary Edition
While everyone is going stir crazy over the Nissan Z Proto’s arrival, Nissan has quietly unveiled a special edition model for one of its veteran nameplates. It’s called the Nissan Maxima 40th Anniversary Edition, and, as the name clearly indicates, it’s a celebratory model of the Maxima’s 40-year run in the U.S.
Yes, the Maxima has been in America that long. It’s the longest-running nameplate in the country, and to mark that occasion, Nissan went all-out in dressing the Maxima 40th Anniversary with all the bells and whistles.
2019 Nissan Maxima
Nissan’s participation at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show included the introduction of the 2019 Nissan Maxima. An updated version of the eighth-generation A36 Maxima in L.A. for the 2019 model year with a subtle exterior refresh to go along with a suite of new safety technologies. Nissan hopes that the updates are enough to stem the tide of declining sales that has plagued not only the Maxima but the entire sedan market in the U.S. As Nissan’s longest-running nameplate — the Maxima has been around since 1981 — there’s a lot of pressure on the 2019 Maxima to live up to, or even exceed, the expectations that Nissan has for it. The 2019 model goes on sale in mid-December.
The Nissan Maxima is something of an oddity in the automotive landscape. It used to be that the Max was the biggest car in Nissan’s lineup — hence its maximum name. But for the last couple of generations, the Maxima’s size has been matched by its cheaper sister, the Nissan Altima.
This creates all sorts of confusion for some consumers. A friend saw me comparing a Camry to an Altima and said, “Shouldn’t you compare Camry to Maxima?”
No, no you should not. The Maxima is much more of a driver’s car than any Camry, though I admit the new-for-2018 Camry closes the gap a little (more on that in a minute.)
As for anyone else who may be confused by Maxima’s place in the family sedan world, let me put it this way: It punches well above its weight — so much so that, if I were considering spending my money on an entry-level luxury car like a Mercedes CLA or Lexus ES, I’d honestly consider the Maxima in that same pack.
2016 - 2017 Nissan Maxima
The eighth-generation Nissan Maxima comes 40 years after the name was launched as a trim level for the 1976 Bluebird. It was first unveiled to the public during a surprise impression during Nissan’s 2015 Super Bowl ad, which was then followed by a couple of pictures to hold us off until it officially debuted at the New York Auto Show. In short, it was a revolutionary design that brought more sports DNA to the car than was had in all the previous generations combined. Outside, the car a very sculpted body profile, a longer and wider footprint, and a very bold front end. The inside, just like the outside, was heavily inspired by Nissan’s Sport Sedan Concept. The center console is crowded but functional, and the two-tone coloration of the interior is more than inviting. The large infotainment screen in the center stack is angled toward the driver, and the overall feel is comparable to that of more expensive full-size sedans on the market.
After a total of 24 years and six redesigns, the Maxima is finally the car it was always meant to be. It’s got the room for hauling the family around and the looks to make just about any man who is stuck driving a sedan happy. On top of the new looks, that revised 3.5-liter V-6 under the hood packs a decent 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, which isn’t bad for a car that starts out below $32,500. Of course, it does have some strong competition from models like the Chevy Impala and the Toyota Avalon, so it should come as no surprise that Nissan went the extra mile to bring us something truly magnificent.
The funny thing is, over all the generations, the Maxima has progressively gotten better. If you position a picture of each generation in order from oldest to newest, it shows an evolution similar to that shown in evolutionary charts derived from Darwin’s theory of evolution. 2016 Nissan Maxima – Driven
The Maxima has been around since 1981, but never has it been so focused on performance and driver engagement. All new for 2016, the eighth generation Maxima pushes the limits of what Nissan has ever done with its family sedan, making it far more appealing to those who refuse to sacrifice driving pleasure with the addition of kids. It might not be a four-door GT-R, but the Maxima has its sights squarely on the being BMW 5 Series for the everyman.
Much of that spunk comes from the 3.5-liter V-6. Naturally aspirated, the all-aluminum engine kicks out 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. Ironically, a CVT sends power to the front wheels, though Nissan says it tirelessly worked to make the CVT behave less like a rubber band gun. The attention pays off, though nobody will mistake the gearbox for a traditional automatic.
Of course, power and performance are only half the story. The overall design screams to be looked at – the long nose, aggressive grille, sweeping beltline, and coupe-like rear roof make the Maxima one of the best-looking sedans on the market. Or at least one of the most stylized. The story continues inside. Out Platinum tester packed quilted leather atop Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats, contrast stitching along the center console and dash, and modern in-dash technology.

2016 Nissan Maxima SR Midnight Edition
Last year, Nissan offered a limited run of its Midnight Accessories package. The demand for the package was so strong, Nissan decided to one-up its previous production run and start offering the Midnight Edition Package as a factory option for the Nissan Maxima. The downside to the package is that it’s only available on the Maxima in SR trim, so if you’re looking to get your hands on a “dark” Maxima, you’ll have to go with the Sportiest trim available.
The best part about the whole package as a factory installed option is that it comes at a considerable discount. Dan Mohnke – Vice President, Chief Marketing Manager and Marketing Operations – said, “Customer response to our limited production Maxima ’Midnight’ accessories package last summer was so strong, we’ve now made it a factory installed option – and we’re launching it at a $1,000 discount versus what it would cost to order and install the features individually. This special edition combines a more aggressive look with an affordable price, taking the popular SR grade level to an even higher level as enthusiasts’ favorite Maxima.”
An overall discount of $1,000 doesn’t sound too bad at all, does it? The package consists of several different body color options, as well as several exterior modifications. There are a few modifications to the interior, but this package is mainly designed for exterior gratification, so don’t expect much. When the 2016 Nissan Maxima first rolled out, most people had to take a step back, as the redesign was pretty dramatic. Now that everyone has had their opportunity to take it in, Nissan is showing off what buyers can do with their four-door sports car, by releasing the Maxima SR Midnight at the BET Experience.
The additional equipment that makes up the 2016 Maxima SR Midnight gives the sports sedan a dark and sporty look. While I can appreciate the additional bits that give it this look, I have to tell you that there is nothing special about this car. This is simply a Maxima SR with a handful of optional equipment added in.

Nissan has pulled the covers off its third design concept today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Rounding out the launches of the Resonance Concept in Detroit last year and the Friend-Me concept first seen in Shanghai last April, Nissan’s new and boringly named Sports Sedan Concept has bowed in the Motor City.
Seen as more than just a design study, the Sports Sedan Concept has real potential for seeing its shapes and curves move into production, possibly in the for of the next-gen Maxima. Especially with the same cues mirrored in the other two vehicles, it’s a pretty safe bet this is the design direction Nissan is taking for its mid-decade makeover.
After giving the four-door sedan a chance to soak in our minds, it looks rather good. The sharp, dominating V-shaped grille sits between familiar fish-hook or boomerang-style headlights followed by a flowing, fluid-like motion along the sides, culminating together in a more angular rear trunk lid. A small, black strip visually cuts the C-pillars — combined with the blacked-out A-pillars — make the roof appear to be floating in mid air. The GT-R-esque, steeply-raked windshield rises to meet the steeply-angled roof right above the front passengers’ laps, then continues down and back, ending just behind the 21-inch wheels. It all works together making the car an aesthetically interesting and congruent collaboration of curves and angles.
As said before, the possibilities for the Sports Sedan Concept to see production are high, though not under that vague name. It’s likely to be the next Maxima. Nissan seems to be quite regarding details and specs of the under-body greasy bits, but some experts are reporting the venerable 3.5-liter V-6 will return, as will its current CVT powering the front wheels.

The Nissan Maxima’s replacement is finally on track for arrival next fall as a 2015 or early-2016 model, with a shift in focus toward performance to better differentiate Nissan’s flagship sedan from the popular (but bland) Altima sedan.
Exclusive TopSpeed Renderings show a speculative preview of this hot new sports sedan, which looks to shake off the front-drive proportions and goofy grin in favor of a wider, lower and meaner style like the 370Z and GT-R.
Nissan’s sports car lineup has never been this strong, and continued support for the company’s two tiers of performance cars has really helped the brand’s image, despite being diluted from selling millions of basic Sentra’s and Versa econoboxes to pay the bills.
The Maxima was really at a crossroads before this current re-alignment to its 4DSC roots. The next generation was even mooted to go the full EV route, with the cab-forward styling of the 2011 Nissan Ellure concept thought to be previewing both the just-launched Altima and next Maxima.
Another option on the table would adapt the 370Z’s latest chassis for use in a rear-drive sedan, or even a stretched GT-R of our dreams. These two scenarios are far less likely than a continued front-drive layout, but low and dramatic proportions that evolve the boring Nissan look very nicely.
Keeping the existing Maxima layout is a safe bet because it is the only way to continue the current model’s $31,000 to $36,000 price range. Nissan’s ability to sell a volume sedan for more than $40,000 is less than a sure thing, especially with Infiniti’s billion-dollar name changes and new Q50 sedan to replace the G37.

The Nissan Maxima is back for 2014 with only a handful of updates late in this model’s life cycle. A new Limited trim on the base model offers all the coolest elements from the $36,000 SV Sport package for only $31,750. Upgrades include a new dark-grey wheel design, dark grille and light surrounds and xenon low beams.
As equipped, the Maxima looks far more youthful and sporty than its tenure on the market would suggest. In fact, there is even a little bit of modern-day Infiniti Q45 about the slinky lights, giant fender arches and boxed jaw. The Nissan Maxima’s best asset is still its $31,000 base price, which holds the line for 2014. The SV trim is now about $700 more expensive, but brings big upgrades in equipment and handling.
The classic 4DSC is no longer the golden performance car that it once was, when it was a standout with its standard V-6 engine and manual transmission. Those days are gone for the Maxima in this generation, as a CVT automatic saps some of this big sedan’s hot rod charisma.
The sports sedan idol at Nissan was clearly passed to Infiniti almost a decade ago, so where does that leave this flagship in buyers’ minds versus the Acura TL or the new Chevrolet Impala?

The Nissan Maxima has been a pillar model for the Japanese brand for many years, so it wasn’t all that surprising that the company decided to freshen up the model for its 2012 release. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of changes done on the car - both aesthetic and performance - to make it look different from the 2011 model.
For one, there are limited modifications done on the exterior of the car. The car’s powertrain also remains the same, which is a bummer considering that the engine has been around for the past three generations.
What we do like about the 2012 Nissan Maxima is that it’s got optional upgrades that customers can avail to for a pretty reasonable price. For only $750, you can get plenty of new goodies that can turn your Maxima into a full-fledged eye-catcher.
It’ll still carry the same powertrain, which is pretty disappointing, but hey, you can’t fault Nissan for at least trying to improve the new Maxima, even if the only thing they are offering is optional features.

Not much has changed for the Nissan Maxima since last year, so this little update will be short and sweet. For starters, in 2011 Nissan offers a new rolled edge tailpipe finisher, new smoked headlights (Sport models), new dark chrome grille (Sport models), and unique shiny gray interior stitching (Sport models). Nissan is also offering two new exterior colors; Metallic Slate and Brilliant Silver.
The 2011 Maxima will come standard with many little perks including a premium audio system, RearView Monitor and Nissan Hard Drive Navigation system with XM NavTraffic Real-Time Traffic Information and XM NavWeather (XM subscription required, sold separately), Voice Recognition and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.
Prices haven’t changed all that much either. Last year the Maxima’s price began at about $30,460. This year the 2011 Nissan Maxima’s prices start at $30,810 for the S version and at $33,530 for the SV version, both on sale now. Both models are powered by a 290-HP 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ-series V6 engine mated to a Xtronic CVT transmission with manual and “Ds” (drive sport) modes. Paddle shifters are also available.

Improved for the 2009 model year, the Nissan Maxima premium sedan is entering the 2010 model year with a few new touches, including the fine-tuning of its color palette and available option packages. For 2010 Maxima will be offered in two trim levels: S and SV, with prices starting from $30,460.
The 2010 Maxima is powered by a 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine that delivers a total of 290 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. All 2010 Maximas come equipped with a refined Xtronic CVT with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima’s sporty driving character.
Revisions to the 2010 Maxima include new wheel finishes for 18-inch (Fine Silver) and 19-inch (Hyper Silver) wheels; Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System is now standard on all models; a 7-inch color monitor, RearView Monitor, auxiliary audio/video input jack, iPod net and 2GB Music Server are added to the new optional Monitor Package (USB connectivity also included); DVD playback capability, streaming audio via Bluetooth technology and XM NavWeather are added to Technology Package; XM Satellite Radio becomes standard on Maxima 3.5 SV; and the previous iPod connectivity is changed to USB connectivity. Also added are two new exterior colors, Crimson Black and Ocean Gray.

Nissan unveiled today at the New York Auto Show the 2009 Maxima, a model that marks a return to the longtime Nissan flagship sedan’s roots as a commanding 4-door sports car – a vehicle that is unique in both appearance and driving feel.
For five previous generations, Maxima has been built on a front-wheel drive (FWD) platform. Yet with the new Maxima’s development team everything was open for discussion, including the benefits of front-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive (RWD). Although there are well-known advantages of RWD in terms of sporty handling, it was ultimately decided that by switching Maxima from its previous platform to Nissan’s new “D platform,” which was first introduced on the current Nissan Altima Sedan, Hybrid and Coupe, the target Maxima performance could be delivered – without giving up the added FWD benefits of lower costs, lower weight and enhanced roominess versus a RWD platform.
For 2009, Maxima again features a standard 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine, enhanced and refined to take its driving performance to new levels. The engine delivers 290 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque (estimated), increases of 35 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima. All 2009 Maximas come equipped with a revised Xtronic CVT with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima’s sporty driving character.

Nissan, in cooperation with Steve Millen Sports Cars revealed at the SEMA Show a customized version of the 2009 Maxima.
Nissan likes to think of the Maxima as its "4-Door Sports Car", so it receives the full aftermarket treatment from well-known Nissan race driver and builder Steve Millen. Modifications include engine airflow management improvements, rear roof and deck lid spoilers, custom wheels and tires and a two-tone black-and-silver paint treatment. Like any good SEMA project, many of these parts can already be purchased for your commuter 2009 Maxima.
The new 2007 Nissan Maxima, which is scheduled to go on sale in early summer 2006, elevates Maxima’s position as Nissan’s flagship sedan with a redesigned exterior, a greatly refined interior and the addition of new, available technology features. Another significant change is the adoption of the smooth, efficient Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) in place of a traditional automatic transmission design on all models.
The new 2004 Nissan Maxima continues the formula passed down from five previous generations - an unmatched blend of performance and luxury. The sixth generation combines Maxima’s traditional high level of performance from the award-winning VQ engine with expressive sports styling and bold design innovations. The 2004 Maxima’s SkyViewâ„¢ features a glass panel roof running lengthwise over the front and rear seats, while a new Elite Package includes a fixed, full center console that creates true 4-place seating.
