Honda, Toyota, and Nissan Threaten to Leave the U.K. if Brexit Kills Profits
The uncertainty of the U.K.’s “Brexit” away from the European Union looms as one of the world’s biggest storylines since the shock vote that happened in 2016. There’s still a year away before the U.K. formally leaves the European bloc, but there are already concerns from other countries all over the world about the kind of trade agreements that will arise from the country’s departure from the EU. One of the concerned nations is Japan and, in an unusual move for the normally docile Japanese people, the country said that its companies would leave Britain if trade barriers made them unprofitable. Among the Japanese companies that could exit Britain include Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.
Instant gratification is great, but they also say that good things come to those who wait. So apparently, the anticipation of something can build to make the moment of fulfillment even better than if it was received immediately. It’s like finally digging into a delicious meal after a few hours of salivating at the aroma wafting in from the kitchen.
In this particular circumstance, we find the entrée to be a thick slab of Japanese engineering emanating a bouquet of world-class performance specs. Sitting down to enjoy it is Nick Coombes, who placed his order in 2013 as soon as he heard about the GT-R Nismo’s 7:08 Nurburgring lap time. The man is clearly smitten by the car’s capabilities, as this 2015 Nismo is the third Godzilla he’s owned. As Coombes puts it, “once you’ve got GT-R in your blood, that is it.”
To commemorate this first delivery, Nissan sent Coombes to Thruxton Motorsport Centre, where GT Academy winner and current LMP1 racer Jann Mardenborough was on hand to help him break in the new toy. The track was wet, which was no problem for the GT-R’s legendary AWD system.
After 17 months of waiting, Coombes seems ecstatic to finally be at the helm of his new dream ride. It’s the ultimate road-going expression of Nissan’s racing pedigree, and should keep him satisfied for a while. That is, until they make a faster one.

The Nissan Navara, the global version of the Frontier, is getting a new special edition package with the help of Salomon, a well-known mountain sports brand. The truck builds off the mid-grade Tekna trim level and comes equipped with several unique appearance upgrades both inside and out. Don’t mistake this for a mundane special edition, though, as Nissan is only building 500 examples and will be giving a £250 voucher for Salomon gear, roughly worth $386 at today’s exchange rates.
Salomon edition Navaras are easy to spot thanks to the Salomon logo on the doors, hood and tailgate, along with the chrome door handles, chrome fog light rings, and a chrome accent bar along the front valance.
Nissan is also making the Salomon edition more attractive with the pricing as well. The automaker says it would normally cost more than £1,300 ($2,000) to add the extra options included with the truck, but customers are only getting charged £750 ($1,150) over the Tekna trim level. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Nissan UK has just added a new special edition to its Qashqai lineup in the form of the new 360, which replaces the n-tec+ and adds additional equipment for the same £19,945 (about $32,000 at the current exchange rates).
The new Qashqai 360 will be distinguished by a set of additional features like gloss-black roof rails, door mirrors and "360" badges. For the interior, the model will add part-leather trim with double white stitching, a gloss-black gearlever surround, gloss-black door handles and a leather armrest. The model can be ordered in a new Storm White exterior paint priced at £500 ($804) and will be offered with an exclusive set of 18-inch "Onyx" alloy wheels, rear privacy glass and a panoramic roof.
The list of standard equipment will include Nissan’s Connect with 360-degree Around View Monitor system with integrated satnav, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity.
Under the hood, customers can choose between all the engines and transmissions offered for the current Qashqai lineup, but Nissan believes the 1.6 dCi diesel with stop/start technology will be the most popular variant
Okay, so as we all know, the automotive rumormill has a habit of bouncing back and forth before finally resting on the truth. Back in August, we heard a rumor that the Alpine would be built in a joint venture between Renault-Nissan and Caterham. Then just days later, we started exploring the possibility of the Alpine and Infiniti Emerg-E being a Renault-Nissan and Lotus project, given the Emerg-E was already built on the Lotus Evora platform and it would be simpler to build both the Emerg-e and Alpine on the same platform.
Well, it looks as if the Lotus and Nissan talk is done with, as Caterham appears to have swooped in and all but completed a deal with Renault Nissan. Sky News is reporting that Caterham boss, Tony Fernandes, is just about to put ink to paper on a $400 million production deal that will join Caterham and Renault-Nissan at the hip on the Alpine project. The deal would involve a 50-50 split in cost and profits between Renault-Nissan and Caterham.
There is no mention as to whether this will also affect the Emerg-E’s production plans, but chances are that the Emerg-E will remain a Lotus and Renault-Nissan project, since both companies are already so deeply entrenched in the deal.
This also effectively eliminates the chances that the Emerg-E and Renault Alpine will share any significant DNA. It is very doubtful if Lotus would be willing to lend its platform to Caterham for a project that it back-doored from the already struggling sports car builder.
We’ll keep a close eye on this situation because it could boil over into something a little more, as the two rivals compete to snag up a little extra business. The deal is expected to be reviewed on Monday and approved in just a few weeks.
Okay, it is odd enough to say that the Nissan Leaf is running at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but it’s even odder to say that it actually set a lap record there. This strange record set at Goodwood was the fastest time up the famed hill while driving in reverse. That’s right; they drove the entire 1-mile Goodwood hill in reverse.
There are some people in this world that have a hard enough time backing out of their driveways, let alone driving a mile in reverse. Then again, many years ago, I had a friend drive his 1980’s Civic CRX in reverse the entire 3-mile trek home, after his transmission got stuck in reverse gear.
In order to set this record, the team that worked with Terry Grant, the lucky driver stuck taking on this task, actually removed the reverse speed limiter, so he could essentially drive the Leaf in reverse just as fast as he could. Well, he definitely didn’t hit top speed, as his best time came in at 1:53, which equals out to an average speed of about 30 mph.
That’s still an insane feat, though, as driving a car in reverse at 30 mph is definitely not a simple thing, but to traverse the Goodwood’s twisting track is a completely different animal. Hats off to Terry Grant and his team for coming up with such an insane idea and actually executing it.

Just when we thought we found our favorite customized GT-R in AMS Performance’s monster of a Nissan GT-R called the "Alpha Omega". Capable of blasting along a quarter mile in just 8.97 seconds with a ridiculous top speed of 216.9 mph, the Alpha Omega vaulted to the top of the list as far as most awesome GT-R’s are concerned. Well, now we have to reconsider because UK tuner Severn Valley Motorsport has released their own souped up GT-R, affectionately billed as "The Hulk."
One monster GT-R deserves another monster GT-R.
The Hulk, which has been painted in a metallic Imperial Green Pearlescent finish, also comes with plenty of aerodynamic carbon components, including the new front bumper, the GTC Carbon bonnet, carbon gas bonnet lifts, and a host of carbon items - the rear diffusers, side skirts, and rear arch extensions - from Wald International. The S2 Active split wing from Aeromotion was also fitted into the Hulk, as are carbon race mirrors mounted on pillars, carbon exhaust surround, front and rear side markers, LSD doors, L.E.D angle eye day light running lights, and a new set of 20" Volks Racing light weight wheels wrapped in Toyo R888 315/30/20 tires. Inside, the Hulk was treated to a full carbon interior package, Cobra front carbon ultra light race seats, Alcantara fabrics, a six-point roll cage that was custom built to SVM specs, and Takata four-point race harnesses.
All that said, the real meal ticket of the Hulk is what lies under its hood. With an extensive performance upgrade that includes fitting their own 4.2-liter SVM HULK Spec Forged Blueprinted Unit, SVM was able to boost the street-legal GT-R’s output all the way up to 1,250 horsepower with a sick top speed of 218 mph, which by the way, is a new top speed record! The record was achieved at RAF Marham military base in Norfolk, UK and was confirmed by Racelogic Vbox data.

Top Gear’s 17th season flew by just like that, didn’t it?
The sixth and final episode aired over the weekend, and unlike the past episodes, this one more than lived up to the expectations. Richard Hammond got the show off to a promising start with a great segment about the Lamborghini Aventador. From there, the show picked up some steam with a pretty hilarious segment featuring Jeremy Clarkson and James May as they embarked on an electric-car crusade around town. Some unforeseen circumstances resulted in a few mishaps, but all in all, the duo managed to make the most out of their respective cars - Clarkson had the Nissan Leaf while May had the Peugeot Ion - to finish their adventure in one piece. But even that wasn’t enough to convince the two about the potential of electric cars in the future.
Fittingly, the final segment of season 17 took a more serious turn with an inspiring story about a Cross Country racing team in Wales for disabled British soldiers. It’s a humbling way to end a very interesting season and puts into perspective what the human spirit is capable of accomplishing despite the challenges that seemingly lies in front of it.

When you own a powerful car like the Nissan GT-R, knowing how to handle it might be a pretty good idea. Nissan UK is launching for its future GT-R customers an innovative ‘Race Academy’ which could see them obtain their full racing license.
The GT-R customers will participate in Race Academy events at Silverstone, or the GT-R’s spiritual home - the Nurburgring in Germany. Every GT-R customer is invited to take part in the events and get up close and personal with their new supercar before deliveries begin in March 2009.
The Race Academy offers one-on-one tuition and over 45 minutes behind the wheel, and the opportunity to learn how to drift in a Nissan 350Z.
Nissan opened the official GTR order book on April 2nd and within the first 48 hours, 700 customers had already pledge their savings to the new Nissan GT-R supercar. The impatient owner will have to wait until March of next year to receive their baby but at least they will not pay over sticker price (£52,900 starting price). Expect to pay a good 20% markup over that price when the car is available in the showroom.
Due to the heavy demand, from the greedy speculators and car fans , the Japanese manufacturer is encouraging its customers to place their orders as soon as possible, online at www.gtrnissan.co.uk or in the 10 specialised high performance centers in the UK.
Hurry up while supply last!
