2020 Nissan Versa - Driven
The third-generation Nissan Versa was launched and the 2019 New York Auto Show, and with it came an all-new design inside an out. The new Versa features a wider body, was finally updated to feature Nissan’s V-Motion grille, and the rear end benefits form boomerang-shaped tail lights. We got the chance to test the SR model, so it had the extra spoiler on the rear deck but overall, as a package, the new Versa is sportier and more aggressive than before.
The interior felt a dramatic revamp as well, borrowing features from the recently updated Maxima and Altima. The new “Gliding Wing” instrument panel is probably the most recognizable change here, but we also had the SR model, so we were focused on things like the flat-bottom steering wheel, seven-inch infotainment display, and the red and black interior. In terms of cargo room, the Versa will swallow up 14.3 cubic-feet of goods with the rear seats in place or as much as 88.9 with the seats folded down.
Under the hood of our SR tester sits a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that was completely revamped from the last model. It delivers a meager 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, which is, impressively, 12-percent more horsepower and 7-percent more torque. The engine sent the power to the front, 17-inch wheels via an automatic transmission. Pricing for the Versa SR starts at $18,240, but ours was priced at $21,490 with a few option boxes checked. 2017 Nissan Versa Note
Launched at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the second-generation Note arrived on a new platform that Nissan introduced with the Micra. Although slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, the new Note had a significantly lower roof, trading the former MPV-style looks for a more standard hatchback layout. The Note crossed the pond to the U.S. in 2013, when it replaced the hatchback version of the Versa and was renamed the Versa Note. The North American model also sports the biggest engine available with the nameplate globally, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder. In other markets, the Note uses a 1.2-liter three-cylinder and a 1.5-liter four-pot diesel. The Versa Note was redesigned for the 2017 model year, when it received Nissan’s recent styling language and a few interior updates.
Much like all recent redesigns and facelifts, the updated Versa Note adopted Nissan’s "V-Motion" grille, a design highlight that is already available on the majority of the company’s vehicles. In the U.S., the Verso and the Verso Note were the last models to not feature the grille. Thanks to the new "V-Motion" element, the Versa Note bears a closer family resemblance to the larger Nissan Sentra, Altima, and Maxima, while also boasting a sportier design that’s more in line with recently updated competitors such as the Honda Fit, Chevrolet Sonic, and Ford Fiesta.
"Versa Note and Versa sedan combine to be America’s best-selling nameplate in the entry level segment," said Michael Bunce, vice president of product planning. "The enhancements for the new model year give Versa Note a fresh new look, which should help keep the Versa pair in the number one position again in 2017."
It remains to be seen whether Bunce’s comment proves to be accurate with so many cars fighting for supremacy in this segment, but until those sales figures come rollin’ in, let’s have a closer look at what the facelifted Versa Note brings to the table.

At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, Nissan launched the "Color Studio," a factory personalization program that allows customers to add an array of accessories and accent colors to their vehicles. The program was first introduced for the Juke, but at 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show it will expand to the 2016 model year Versa Note.
The concept is obviously identical to the hatchback. Customers have six exterior parts and six interior features finished to their own liking, as long as they select one of the six hues available. The accent colors can be paired with of the Versa Note’s seven exterior colors and two interior shades, resulting in tens of possible combinations.
The Color Studio program also comes with a special website that offers a full 360-degree view of the Versa Note in all colors and combinations. The said page will go live here starting November 17th.
"The expansion of the Color Studio program to the active lifestyle Versa Note builds on the success of last year’s Juke Color Studio," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America. "As we found with Juke, a little color — or a lot — dramatically changes the look of a vehicle and there’s no easier way to make a ride stand out than the convenient, affordable Color Studio process. We believe Versa Note owners are going to embrace the concept just as much as Juke owners do."

Nissan introduced a revamped Versa for the 2015 model year, but the word “revamped” is a bit of a stretch given the minor changes that took place for 2015. On the outside, the grille now has a curvature to it, and the air inlet on each corner of the fascia has been opened up a little more. The headlights now have a new shape and design, but are a bit uglier than before, and the same goes for the taillights in the rear. Inside, the instrument cluster now has LED backlights, and the center stack has a slightly refreshed look to it. The steering wheel has also been revised to offer audio and hands-free calling controls. Under the hood, the 2015 Versa carries on with the same, boring 109-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder.
As you can see, Nissan did very little to the Versa for 2015 but, considering it is the cheapest model in its segment, it still has a lot going for it. Plus, you can add the fact that for a compact, it does offer pretty comfortable seating for five people. The biggest problem Nissan faces is that, despite its starting price of just $11,990, competing models that cost just a little more come better equipped. Of course, the car is aimed at young buyers with a limited budget so the Versa may be able to carry on for a couple more years.
The Versa sedan’s primary competitors include the Ford Fiesta Sedan and the Kia Rio Sedan, both of which are priced a bit higher, but offer up a little more for the taking. If you’re interested to know just how well the Versa competes, check out our full review below.

When Nissan brought me its cheapest hatchback, the 2014 Versa Note, earlier this year I found myself impressed with its nimbleness, abundant interior space great features despite its bargain price. I did wish it was a little faster, and the CVT isn’t the best, but in general I recommended it as a great bargain runabout. For 2015, Nissan has the new sportier looking Versa Note SR, and the automaker sent it my way for a week of testing (read: flogging). The new car has revised visual cues inside and out, and the equipment list is a little different than my last Versa. Best yet, it’s even a little cheaper than the last one I tested as well.
Does the new looks and revised interior make this car even better than the old model? Does the lowered price and reduced equipment options make it a better deal or a drearier place to spend time? Did that CVT magically get any better?

The Nissan Versa Note is the smallest and cheapest hatch you can get from Nissan. It was built to provide the highest level of space and equipment for the lowest possible price. The car has been a solid seller for Nissan in the past, but for 2014 it is all-new. A new exterior shape comes to the car, along with a fresh interior design and new gadgets that have been pulled from some of the much more expensive cars in the Nissan family.
With a new design, revised equipment levels, improved interior space and the promise even better fuel economy, the Versa Note is offering a lot. Has Nissan had to cut corners on build quality and refinement to hit a price target? Will the increased fuel economy come at the cost of driving fun?
I was handed the keys to a top-level model with every bell and whistle Nissan could throw at it. Would the cheap five-door win me over, or did Nissan drop the ball with its reinvented people mover?

Ever since the Nisan Versa came to the U.S. back in 2007, the little car proved that cheap transportation didn’t have to be so dreary. While it’s no GT-R in terms of styling, the sedan and hatchback versions of the car sold well. In 2013, Nissan revamped the Versa for its second generation and added the Note name to designate the Hatchback version from the sedan.
Now for 2015, Nissan is adding a little more spice with the SR trim package on the Versa Note hatchback. While nothing changes mechanically, the SR trim does bring some sportiness to the car’s interior. Things like a new leather-wrapped steering wheel, suede look-alike material on the seats with orange accent double stitching. A refreshed center instrument panel is finished out in piano black plastic with silver accents and chrome knobs. It also gets a Fine Vision three-dial gauge cluster with a floating trip computer.
The SR sport trim package is also joined by the new top-of-the-line SL trim package for 2015, rounding out the S, S Plus, and SV trim lines.
The Versa Note SR represents Nissan’s up-marketing of the Versa in response to the stiffening competition. Cars like the Ford Fiesta, Chevy Spark, Honda Fit, and Toyota Yaris are all strong in the segment. The argument gets even easier to debate once IIHS ratings are taken into account, with the Spark earning the relatively best score of the bunch.
Updated 05/28/2014: Nissan announced today prices for the new Note SR - the latest addition to the current Note lineup. The SR version will be priced from $17,530 and it will add a series of unique exterior and interior treatments, like sporty front and rear fascias and grille, dark headlight surrounds, fog lights, rear spoiler, suede-like seats and 16-inch sport aluminum-alloy wheels.

Nissan has unveiled a new addition to the Versa lineup at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. This new Versa Note will go on sale in the summer of 2013 at a price of $13,990 and in four different trim levels: S, S Plus, SV and SL Packages.
When compared to the Versa sedan version, the new Note version will get its own distinctive look, feel and added hatchback utility. Design elements have been inspired by the Note designation used in other global markets, and will include steeply sloped front windshield, sculpted front doors and dramatic character lines.
All four models will be powered by an advanced 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a Nissan Xtronic CVT transmission. This combination allows the new Versa Note to deliver an impressive fuel economy of 35 mpg, on combined cycle.

The new 2012 Nissan Versa has shown up at the 2011 New York Auto Show, but it isn’t exactly bringing anything we don’t already know about considering it was unveiled as the Tiida at the Shanghai Auto Show. It is built on a new global "V" (for Versatile) platform which is a bit shorter than the previous platform, but has a longer wheelbase which provides a tad bit more room in the backseat for passengers. Another great thing about the new Versa/Tiida is that it aims to deliver a fuel economy of 33 mpg on the combined cycle.
"Compact cars are getting a lot of attention lately due to rising fuel costs and concerns about the environment. Yet many buyers are disappointed in what they find – vehicles rife with compromise," says Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "This new Versa Sedan, a ‘clean sheet’ ground-up design, takes small cars in a whole new direction – proving that you don’t have to sacrifice style for affordability, interior roominess for a smaller footprint, or drivability for high mpg."
The new Versa sedan will go on sale this summer in three trim levels: Versa Sedan 1.6 S (offered in 5MT and CVT versions), Versa Sedan 1.6 SV (CVT only), and Versa Sedan 1.6 SL (CVT only) with a starting price of $10,990.

The Japanese automaker Nissan has revealed details about both the 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan 2010 Versa. Both models will go on sale starting in September of 2009, and start at $9,990 for the sedan and $13,150 for the practical hatchback model.
For 2010 the Nissan Versa gets a slight restyling with an upgraded grill, new interior fabric patterns, white back lit instrument cluster with Nissan’s familiar reddish orange glow. The Versa 1.8 S wears a new set of 15-inch wheel covers and new 1.8 SL hatchback gets a new set of 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The entry level Nissan Versa Sedan 1.6 Base and Versa Sedan 1.6 models are powered by a 107 HP 1.6 Liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine, while the Versa Hatchback and Sedan 1.8 S and 1.8 SL offer a 122 HP 1.8 Liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine standard. An added safety measure for the new Nissan is an Anti-lock Braking System that now comes standard on the 1.8 S model, while sticking around as a standard offering on the 1.8 SL.
The rest of the Nissan Versa’s standard equipment list includes: Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio (XM subscription required, sold separately) and an audio system with Clarion speakers and Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer. All these amenities add up to make the Nissan Versa an affordably practical ride.

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) announced the addition of an all-new Nissan Versa hatchback and sedan for the 2007 model year. The new entry-level Versa is expected to have a MSRP starting at around $12,000. The hatchback model is scheduled to go on sale in early summer 2006, with the Versa sedan following in late 2006. The Versa is one of many enhancements to Nissan’s 2007 car lineup, which will include an all-new Sentra, all-new Altima and enhanced Maxima.
In these days when $3-a-gallon gas is the reality and $4 may be just around the corner, small cars are making a lot more sense for commuters. Park the big luxury SUV in the garage during the week, replace your second car with an efficient little four-banger for the commute, and you’re likely to save a few thousand dollars on gas per year. That savings adds up quickly, leaving you more money to spend on weekend spa getaways, heirloom tomatoes at the local Whole Foods, or online poker games…however you’re inclined.
The Versa hatchback is scheduled to go on sale in early summer 2006, with the Versa sedan following in late 2006. Versa is expected to be priced starting at a MSRP around $12,000. Combined with the popular Nissan Sentra, the new Versa gives Nissan a major presence in the under $20,000 market, which currently accounts for nearly 1.9 million annual sales.
