Velozzi is a relatively new company, but this didn’t stop it to build an innovative electric sports car. The main innovation behind Veluzzi’s Sportscar is the use of Capstone’s ultra-clean C65 micro turbine. If you are an electric car enthusiast, this could sound familiar to you as it’s the same technology found under the hood of the Capstone CMT-380 concept presented at the LA Auto Show in 2009.

This isn’t the only innovation found under the skin of the new super car, as Velozzi has also used its proprietary material named Velo, to build the entire chassis.

The ultra light chassis is combined with a strong 770-horsepower AC-induction electric motor which rewards you with an ultra fast acceleration being able to hit the 60 mph mark in less than 3 seconds. This breathtaking performance makes the Velozzi Supercar one of the fastest electric vehicles from the streets.

Design

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the Velozzi Supercar is a masterpiece of aerodynamics. The proportions and body parts have been carefully calculated to improve the car’s aerodynamics as much as possible.

Velozzi started its fight against the drag coefficient by making the car very low and wide, two attributes that are characteristic for any performance car, as they help to keep the vehicle better glued to the ground. As it was expected the sporty proportions of the car were combined with a slippery lightweight skin, designed to cut easy through the air. Though, the Supercar it’s not only slippery but it’s also good looking and we’re glad to see that Velozzi managed to find a good compromise between design and functionality.

As most of today’s sports cars, Velozzi’s creation received a set of oversized front fenders which dictate the entire style of the front fascia. Up front we also find a set of pretty simple headlights which seem to merge with the body and remind us about the Capstone CMT-380 prototype presented in 2009.

The front bumper is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the body and received a wide air intake crossed by a set of horizontal bars. Flanking the grille are two sharp air intakes cut deep into the body work that are specially designed to keep the front brakes cool.

The Velozzi Supercar’s body received a thick sweeping stroke which starts near the front wheel arch, continues to run along the entire side of the car and goes over the rear wheels accentuating the shoulder line and generating extra downforce.

The stroke also leads us to the large air intakes sculpted behind the doors. Apart from looking great, the air intakes also help to maintain a proper temperature for the electric parts.

A keen eye will spot that there is a major difference between the dimensions of the front and rear overhangs, as the later is significantly shorter. The short rear overhang is combined with an abruptly cut off tail which allows the air flow that runs under the car to come up through the curved diffuser without creating excessive upward pressure. On the other hand, the rush of air that passes over and around the moving car is disrupted by a rear spoiler which is seamlessly integrated into the body work.

The cabin is covered by a pretty interesting roof which looks close to the aircraft glass-cockpits. For the moment Velozzi didn’t reveal any details about the interior, but judging by the exterior proportions we can expect to be pretty cramped place to be in.

Engines and performance

Velozzi claims that the Velo chassis used for its Supercar is lighter, more cost effective, safer and more modular than its metal or composite counterparts. It weighs less than 100 lbs. so it helps to further increase both the efficiency and performances.

Moreover, Velozzi says that its Velo chassis can be used on a large scale for any type of vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, 3 wheelers, race cars, Jets, UAVs, motorhomes, buses, boats etc. To save even more weight, the vehicle also uses carbon nanotube epoxy/carbon panels made in conjunction with Bayer.

The list of advanced technologies continues with the micro turbine technology borrowed from Capstone Turbine which is used for the first time in a supercar. The micro turbine charges a 770 hp AC-induction motor which delivers an ultra fast acceleration being able to send the car to 60 mph in only 2.9 seconds.

Keep your foot plated on the accelerator pedal and you’ll reach a top speed of 200 mph, which is similarly impressive.

Capstone's microturbines run on standard diesel fuel, or biodiesel. The attached generator is mounted right on its output shaft and supported by air bearings, so no lubrication is required. There is no liquid cooling required so you won’t need a radiator either. Moreover, Capstone’s turbines can comply with emissions regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency without needing an after treatment.

According to Velozzi, the supercar can operate on 100% battery power in zero-emissions mode for a range of up to 200 miles. When the energy stored in the batteries is close to zero, the Capstone microturbine will recharge them on the fly adding an extra 1,000 miles to the driving range.

Verdict

For the moment we don’t have any info about the price, but don’t expect to be affordable. To spoil your dreams even more, the vehicle will be available in a very limited production number.

The sporty pedigree of the hand built vehicle will certainly be transmitted in a unique driving experience and the large number of innovative technologies has the potential to change the future of sports cars.

However, only time could tell if Velozzi has what it takes to survive in the highly competitive market of electric sports cars.
