Chinese car companies still have a pretty limited stake in any market outside of China itself. The reasons why could make up an entire article on their own, but Chinese auto manufacturers have been trying to increase their presence in other markets — partly by teaming up with foreign companies. This is why Chery Automobiles teamed up with Kenon Holdings of Singapore to form a new company called Qoros with an eye to sell cars all over the world. That was in 2007, and since then the company has debuted its first model, the 3, at the Geneva Motor Show.

The follow up to the Qoros 3 is the Qoros 5, a new flagship model for the brand that is also being shown to the world first in Europe. But, the 5 is being shown at the Milan Expo and not an actual car show, with its actual car show debut coming later at the Guangzhou show. That all suggests that Qoros is playing it a bit safe with the 5. It’s not unusual for such a new company, but showing the 5 in Europe and putting out a press release in English, is a big step that a lot of other, larger Chinese firms don’t bother with yet.

A lot of Chinese models are pretty blatant rip offs of designs from existing models from different companies, but this approach obviously wasn’t going to fly if Qoros was going to sell cars outside of China. So the firm hired Gert Hildebrand, a German designer who is known primarily for having led the design of several Mini models. This all sounds promising, but the design of the 5 still ends up being very conservative - even the press release from Qoros used words like “simple” and “understated”. It has an understandably German look to it, but it’s not exactly cutting edge. But, this isn’t to say that there’s anything really wrong with it, it’s fine for what will probably be a fairly inexpensive vehicle. The design is fairly similar to that of the 3 in hatchback form, but is presumably a bit bigger and taller.

Qoros didn’t have much to say about the interior, nor did it release any photos. Since the exterior design is so similar to that of the 3, it is a fairly good bet that the interior will be as well. Should this prove to be true, we can expect it to be fairly underwhelming. It’s not actively ugly, but the interior of the 3 is definitely pretty cheap-looking. Then again, it is a pretty cheap car, and no matter how it looks, it still manages to be roomy and comfortable. With the 5 being a bigger, and no doubt more expensive flagship model, it will hopefully have a higher-end cabin, at least in terms of materials if not design.

The 5 will use the same 1.6-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that is used by the 3, and it will be making the same 154 horsepower. That power will be sent through a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission, but it is unclear whether it will go out to all four wheels or just the front. Qoros does seem to want to give us the impression that this is a rugged vehicle, having recently taken it on a publicity tour through China, Russia and on into Western Europe. Many of the rural sections of the tour, especially in China and Russia, included some rough and muddy sections of unpaved road — a move meant to show how well the 5 could handle such conditions. But, there is no mention of an all-wheel-drive system in any of the literature, or from any statements by Qoros spokesmen, so one would think that we would have heard about it by now if it was going to happen.

Safety has never been an area where Chinese cars shine, and this has been one of the bigger factors that have held them back from being competitive outside of China. Qoros has proven to be different with the 3 so far, earning a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. Considering that Qoros’s parent company of Chery has produced some of the lowest-rated cars to be crash tested outside of China in recent years, this is a very important step. That kind of rating doesn’t happen by accident, and we have every reason to expect that the 5 will get a similar rating. However, what we shouldn’t expect is much in the way of electronic driver aids. This isn’t so much because the vehicle is Chinese, but because Qoros is clearly aiming at a low price point, so such features are scarce on all vehicles in this range.

Qoros hasn’t released any pricing information on the 5 yet, but we do know that it will slot in above the 3, which is currently priced at 16,000 euros ($21,600). This sounds more expensive than it probably would be if it were sold in the U.S., and with price differences between the U.S. and European markets being what they are, the Qoros would probably be down somewhere around $15,000. That’s cheap, like Ford Fiesta cheap, for a substantially bigger car. The 5 would certainly be more than that, but even if the price climbs up to $20,000, that’s still quite an inexpensive vehicle. Given this fact, a lot of the dullness of the vehicle becomes more understandable. This is not to say that cheap vehicles can’t be fun or interesting, but for such a new company making such a cheap vehicle, it really is a good effort.

In terms of both size and price, the Tucson is probably the closest thing to the 5 that we currently have in North America. In profile, the 5 even bares a bit of a resemblance to the Tucson. The Tucson made its name by being a good value for the money, and since this is exactly what Qoros is trying to do, the Tucson will be the vehicle to beat. Interior space leaves something to be desired, but this is not uncommon in this segment.

Technically speaking, this is yet another Korean competitor for the 5, as the Trax is a product of GM Korea. It has just been introduced to the U.S. market, and is essentially a rebadged and cheaper version of the Buick Encore. It’s not an especially impressive machine in most respects, but it is a decent amount of vehicle for your 20 grand, and that is what motivates sales in this segment. The newness of the model makes it a wild card for the 5 to contend with.

For all of the talk in the press release about the world of high fashion, the Qoros 5 is really meant to be a cheap vehicle. It is built to offer many of the things that you would find in a more expensive vehicle, but at a slightly lower price. This has been the goal of basically every Chinese car sold in other markets, but Qoros is the first Chinese brand to make a vehicle where corners haven’t been so obviously cut. The 5 takes this idea even further, and represents another big step for the Chinese auto industry. The 5 might not be glamorous, but it is a considerable improvement over previous Chinese cars sold in other markets.

It should be pointed out that before entering the Silk Road Hall of the Milan Expo, Qoros and other Chinese car brands spent 26 days completing a magnificent journey that crosses Asia and Europe exceeding an impressive 15,000 kilometers. With the vision of "One Belt One Road" and the grand vision of "China Made 2025", Qoros and 15 other Chinese automobile brands demonstrated their strength and quality to the world. Starting from the foot of the Great Wall to the muddy roads in Russian Far East and to the German highways without a speed limit, Qoros SUVs have easily passed the dual tests of physical fitness and endurance with zero failures, receiving curious or praising looks along the way in different countries.

Qoros Executive Vice President, Sun Xiaodong, and the representatives of other Chinese automakers attended the Chinese Automobile Brand Promotion in the Silk Road Square of the Milan Expo. "The spirit of independence is the soul of all designs. Milan is a center of science and technology, fashion and innovative products. By making the debut of the new Qoros 5 SUV in the design capital of Europe, we hope to demonstrate our unique pursuit for design that matches the spirit of the city.” said Sun.

Paying tribute to independence with design

The "independence" in Qoros design is not detached from the mainstream, but a unique interpretation of the mainstream SUV design trend. As the first mid-size SUV launched by Qoros to the Chinese market, the Qoros 5 SUV reflects inherent nobility, a precise grasp of the taste of Chinese consumers. It also reflects the same design elements and tonality that have appeared in this year’s Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks such as sportiness, minimalism, futurism and artistic elements.

Clean-cut lines, colors and the spirit of eternity. Whether it be cars or fashion, good designs always have something in common. Just like the popular fashion brand ‘Celine’ which embodies minimalism and purity, the Qoros 5 SUV adheres to the three design principles; symmetry, proportion and simplicity. The Qoros 5 SUV obviously inherits visual design elements of the Qoros family to achieve a harmonious balance between European simplicity and Eastern spirit. An excellent design is always recognizable. Recently The New York Times reported that if you haven’t been to 10 Corso Como and the Prada Foundation Cultural Park to experience their diverse, rich artistic styles, you really haven’t been in Milan. Simply because their designs are excellent and yet very recognizable. Exactly those qualities are typical for the all-new Qoros 5 SUV.

At this year’s Paris Fashion Week, the wayward genius designer John Galliano puts a samurai helmet on supermodels to highlight energy and conflicts. It’s a popular way to enhance a sense of opposition through design elements. With its own understanding of fashion, the Qoros 5 SUV underlines block-like shaping instead of simple outlining and offers more powerful exterior curves and a more dynamic contour. Additional features such as 19-inch large wheels and shark gill-shaped headlights are as eye-catching as the crown jewels.

Simple and tough; Calvin Klein menswear is always understated yet powerful, which is well understood by Qoros designers. Three major design trends including "sharp wide-size headlights", "strong front wheels" and a "dynamic hatchback tailgate" are introduced in the Qoros 5 SUV. In fact, many luxury brand SUVs have captured these trends, further attracting the attention and praise of an increasing number of fans. Through the Milan Expo, the Qoros 5 SUV provides a new design trend for the domestic mainstream SUV market.

Before the debut of the Qoros 5 SUV, Qoros has produced three internationally acclaimed models and won multiple global awards, which has proven again and again Qoros’ persistence and commitment to design, technology, safety and quality.

Through the Milan Expo, Qoros and other Chinese automobile brands will enable the world to see the rapid development of China’s automobile industry. The Qoros 5 SUV will be presented to the public at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2015. Let’s rub our eyes and wait.
