New sedan prototype shows us that Lynk & Co isn’t messing around

Lynk & Co may still be a foreign name to some people, but those who have followed the Geely-owned startup can attest that the company has made impressive strides since it launched its maiden model, the 01, back in 2016. Two years later, Lynk & Co have four models in development, including a sedan that goes by the name “03.” The four-door vehicle is still in the development stages, but recent spy shots of the model show a car that carries the same design imprint as the 01 and 02, wrapped up in a body of a sedan.

Take the design of the Lynk & Co 01 and 02, morph into a sedan, and you get the Lynk & Co 03.

Take the design of the Lynk & Co 01 and 02, morph into a sedan, and you get the Lynk & Co 03. Ok, so it’s not as simple as that, but a number of key aspects of the company’s design language appear to be consistent across the whole model lineup.

The tiered headlamps, for example, are also present in the 03. The first set is located on top of the front fenders while the other is located in the front fascia, right where traditional headlamps are supposed to be. Some folks don’t like this kind of setup, believing it to be a little too wonky, but it is different, something that the industry these days should have more of. The rear taillamps also follow the same design as the ones found on the two SUVs. It starts off horizontally before dropping vertically as it approaches the edges of the sedan.

The rest of the 03’s design is what you’d expect from a proportionately sized sedan. Even with the camo wraps covering the whole surface, you can tell that the 03 looks bulkier than most sedans. The concept version the company showed in 2017 had body lines that extended slightly upward as it approached the rear. It’s hard to see with the wraps, but the production version seems to have followed the same design direction. In fact, it’s hard to imagine the production model looking completely different from the concept that we saw last year. About the only curious thing in the test mule is the Superman logo-shaped component in the rear diffuser. It’s unclear what that is, but it wasn’t in the concept version. Perhaps it’s a brake light? Maybe a parking light?

Interior

Unless something dramatically changes, expect the interior of the 03 to look largely identical to the other models in the lineup.

The spy shots don’t reveal anything with regards to the interior of the Lynk & Co 03, but it is fairly straightforward given what we know about the 01 and 02. Unless something dramatically changes, expect the interior of the 03 to look largely identical to the other models in the lineup.

That would include the two-tiered dashboard, the clean-looking central tunnel, the digital instrument cluster, and the large infotainment display that sits in the middle of the center stack.

If there’s going to be some differentiation in the 03’s interior, it’s probably going to revolve around the kind of materials that Lynk & Co uses to dress it up. The concept version featured generous amounts of leather, Alcantara, contrast stitching, and colorful trim options. Extra options are likely to be included, too, giving future customers the chance to personalize the look of the interior of their 03s to better suit their personalities.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the sedan’s interior is the amount of space it has. The bulky profile of the 03 suggests that there could be ample headroom inside, but a look at the sedan’s side profile suggests that it isn’t a long model. Is the car’s length going to be a hindrance in the amount of leg room the 03 will have? Only time will tell, I suppose.

Drivetrain

Three- and four-cylinder engines are likely, including a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that will work with an electric motor to form a hybrid unit.

Since the Lynk & Co 03 is going to use the same CMA platform that underpins the Volvo S40, it’s entirely possible that the 03 will feature the same engine options as its counterpart from Volvo. Nothing has been made official at the moment, but the sedan is tipped to be closely linked to the next-generation S40. Should that be the case, we can expect the 03 to carry a number of different engines in different states of tune. Three- and four-cylinder engines are likely, including a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that will work with an electric motor to form a hybrid unit. We all know that a big part of Lynk & Co’s future revolves around electric cars. The 01 SUV already has its own, and we can expect similar versions to drive for the 02, 03, and 04 hatchback. Gearbox choices could include a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Likewise, the shared platform also opens the door for the 03 to feature most, if not all, safety and driver assistance systems that come from Volvo. The two companies are effectively sister-brands under Geely so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a good amount of cooperation between the two sides.

As a startup, Lynk & Co is definitely going to need Volvo if it wants to elevate the level of legitimacy it has in the auto industry.

Prices

Without actually knowing how much the Lynk & Co 03 is going to cost, I don’t think it’s going to be very expensive. The range-topping version of the flagship 01 SUV doesn’t even approach $30,000 so my best guess is that the 03 sedan will be offered at a cheaper price point, perhaps in the vicinity of $22,000 to $26,000 depending on the trim and capability. Added options and the usual menu of extra accessories could drive the price up to the $30,000 region, but it should still be affordable enough that anyone who’s looking for a new sedan will take a serious gander at the 03.

Competition

It seems inevitable that the Lynk & Co 03 will end up being a rival to the Tesla Model S. Like Tesla, Lynk & Co is promising to redefine the future of the compact sedan segment by introducing new technology and a new approach towards maximizing the sedan’s performance capabilities. In a lot of ways, that’s what Tesla wants out of the Model 3, too. The Model 3’s all-electric status means that range is arguably the most important factor in the car’s ability to sell. The Model 3 does well for itself with two options, standard and Long Range.

The standard version of the Model 3 gets 220 miles of range, and if you run out of juice, it only takes 30 minutes to charge it back up to a range of 130 miles. As far as performance goes, the standard Model 3 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130 mph. Opt for the Long Range version, and you’ll get a range of 310 miles. Run out of power, and you can get 170 miles of range after only 30 minutes of charging. That kind of capability allows the Model 3 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds before setting off on a top speed run hitting 140 mph. Pricing for the Tesla Model 3 starts at $35,000 before incentives kick in. Opt for the Long Range variant, and that price goes up to $44,000 before incentives.

BMW 340i - $47,900

If you want a more traditional rival to the Lynk & Co 03, the BMW 3 Series is a good call. The German sedan is one of the institutions of its segment, and buyers can get into a variety of trim levels and body styles, including a hybrid. The 3 Series also has a number of different engine options, beginning with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder that makes 180 horsepower. Move further up the line, and you can also get a 250-horsepower four-cylinder and a 320-horsepower six-cylinder engine. Pricing for the BMW 3 Series starts at $34,900.

Conclusion

Of all of Lynk & Co’s upcoming models, I’m most excited about the 03 sedan. It’s probably not going to sell as well as its SUV counterparts, but it’s still going to be an intriguing choice given the segment it belongs in. For what its worth, the company’s quirky design language is most natural in the 03, almost as if the design was meant to look like it. The interior looks top-shelf, too, and the engine options should give future buyers enough options to consider. If it ends up being priced the way I think it will be, the 03 is going to be a much more appealing model.
