Remember the Zarooq Sand Racer? You don’t? Well, that’s no biggie, because it died at some point a couple of years ago, but now it’s back under a different name, with a polished attitude.

The Zarooq Sand Racer was supposed to open a new niche, that of off-road supercars. It packed a V-6 good for 300 horsepower and looked like a hybrid between a Dakar rally car and an exotic, but was rather short-lived. This is where the Laffite G-Tec X-Road comes to pick up where the Sand Racer left off.

2020 Laffite G-Tec X-Road

When Zarooq Motors dissolved, its operations director Bruno Laffite decided to give the Sand Racer another chance. And that he did, under the Laffite Supercars umbrella and with a little help from G-Tec’s Philippe Gautheron, who designed and built the X-Road’s rolling chassis. Oh yeah, it’s got a new name now: Laffite G-Tec X-Road.

It also got new performance credentials. Sweet. The X-Road spins its rear wheels through a five-speed or six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters and can reach a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h). All in all, the X-Road tips the scales at just 1,300 kilos (2,866 pounds) and while we’re not given any info on its 0-60 mph sprint time, it should be pretty quick off the line. It also has a suspension travel of 17 inches, so hooning it over rough terrain is likely to be as fun as it gets.

An All-Electric Laffite X-Road Is Also Offered

That’s right. If you’re over and done with ICEs (Internal Combustion Engines), then Laffite will gladly sell you an electric X-Road. Mind you, you’ll have to wait about 11 months to get it from the moment you’ve placed the order. There’s no word on how many e-motors are tasked with motivating the X-Road EV, but overall power output rises to 460 horsepower (350 kilowatts). What’s more, a 60-kWh battery pack promises a max range of 200 miles (322 km).
