2024 Mullen Five

The California-made Mullen Five wants to be a more sophisticated and luxurious EV, with Tesla-rivaling performance

LISTEN 03:23

The ever-increasing influx of start-up EV manufacturers is apparent and while most of them seem to be coming from China, the Mullen Five comes from the sunny state of California. With Tesla now being accompanied by plenty of other EV manufacturers, it will be interesting to see how each of them will set itself apart from the pack. It seems Mullen Five wants to be the more sophisticated and luxurious EV, Tesla never managed to be. But will it succeed?

Right off the bat, we see the athletic, coupe-like design of the electric crossover. We first saw the Mullen Five seems to be a sportier version of the MX-05, which was teased last year. While we don’t know whether or not it shares the same electric powertrain, we know some of the performance figures and they are impressive.

The Mullen Five comes with a 95 kWh battery, which allows for a 325-mile (523 km) range and can be charged to 80 percent in just 21 minutes, thanks to its fast-charging capabilities. In terms of acceleration, the Mullen Five is capable of reaching from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The company is also working on a Mullen Five RS, which will be even quicker, with a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 1.9 seconds and a 200-mph (322 km/h) top speed. If this happens, the Tesla Model S Plaid will definitely have something to worry about.

The Mullen Five will be sold as a premium eSUV and it certainly has the aesthetics to match. The elegant, sporty design features clean and sharp lines, reminiscent of some of the best sporty SUVs, currently on sale, such as the Range Rover Velar, Jaguar F-Pace, and even Aston Martin DBX. Part of the Mullen Five’s “dress code” are the 23-inch wheels, which give the EV a ferocious stance. Whether the massive wheels and thin-wall tires will affect the ride quality remains to be seen.

The luxury crossover will come with a level 2.5 advanced driver assist system (ADAS), active noise-cancellation, Multi LED intelligent LIVE technology”, and a luxurious interior with customizable configuration, to name a few. There are also two centrally-positioned infotainment screens –one for the driver and front passenger and one for the second-row occupants.

In terms of pricing, the base version starts at $55,000, while the mid-level “Touring” would cost $75,000. The more performance-oriented RS is expected to get near the $100,000 mark. Production is scheduled to begin in 2023, at Tunica, Mississippi, while deliveries will start in the second quarter of 2024. Mullen already accepts deposits of just $100, which are refundable, in case you change your mind. The car was already awarded “best zero-emission vehicle” at the LA Auto Show. If that isn’t exciting enough, the brand is also working on an EV sports coupe that resembles the Quantu K50.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
