The time has come for the aging Pagani Huayra to sing its swan song. And what a song has Pagani come up with. Meet the Huayra R, a track-only supercar that costs $3.1 million and will only be made in 30 units.

The first Huayra saw daylight all the way back in 2012. Since then, Horacio Pagani’s boutique car company has churned out different variations of the Huayra, although nothing comes close to the R.

The engine is a one-off built by Mercedes’ racing subsidiary

Pagani commissioned HWA Racelab, a company that supplies components and even whole race cars for Mercedes-AMG, to create the Huayra R’s engine. The unit is a 6.0-liter, naturally-aspirated monster that revs all the way to 9,000 rpm. Power? 838 horses at 8,250 rpm. Torque? 553 pound-feet at 5,500 rpm. All sent to the rear wheels.

Not for public roads

As enticing as the power figures might sound, the Huayra R cannot be driven on public roads and part of that is because the engine was not built to meet emissions standards. However, Pagani is offering special mufflers that will help the R meet 110-decibel noise limits imposed by some tracks, which means whoever buys the R will be able to have fun on pretty much every circuit in the world.

Out with the seven-speed, in with a dog-ring six-speed

Unlike other Huayras, the R swaps the seven-speed automated manual for a race-like, six-speed non-synchronized sequential transmission that is integrated into the chassis monocoque and actually plays a part in overall rigidity. Pagani says that a fancy computer handles the initial clutch engagement, after which the driver is free to sift through gear using the shift paddles. Oh, and the whole gearbox setup weighs just 176 pounds.

The R’s “bones” come from the Huayra Roadster BC

In developing the Huayra R, Pagani looked at its own backyard and used the same carbon-titanium structure that holds together the Roadster BC. As a result, the R’s torsional stiffness went up by 16-percent, with bending stiffness taking a 51-percent hike, says Pagani.

Tires inspired by GT3 racing

The R comes with a set of Pirelli slicks (275/675R-19 in the front and 325/705R-19 in the rear) that are between 30- and 40-percent grippier than the best street tires available on the market. The tires are also available in two versions – dry medium or wet medium, so that nasty rain will not stop you from setting a new lap record. You will also need strong brakes, in this case provided by Brembo units with self-ventilated carbon-ceramic rotors and race-grade pads.

2,205 pounds of downforce, 2,315 pounds of dry weight

Pagani says that at 199 mph, the Huayra R generates 2,205 pounds of downforce thanks to the redesigned body kit and the pair of active flaps positioned in the rear. The R is also about 350 pounds lighter than the BC coupe.
