Peugeot finally woke up from its slumber and decided to enter the pickup truck market. The French automaker has revealed its latest creation called the Landtrek. Peugeot isn’t a new player in the truck market and has had a fair share of haulers back in the day, such as the 504 and the 404 trucks.

Even now, it sells the Pick Up in a few African markets. Now, however, it has “returned” with a sincere effort in the form of the Landtrek. Instead of testing the waters by launching just a couple of variants, Peugeot has decided to go full throttle by introducing the truck in three different body styles and two different drive configurations.

The Landtrek Is A Handsome Truck

All trucks measure 75.6 inches in width. The single cab and double cab measure 212.2 inches and 210 inches in length, respectively. From the looks of it, the Landtrek seems to be the love child of a Nissan Navara and the MG Extender; getting more genes from the latter. At the onset, the truck actually looks quite handsome. The French automaker did not try to add a lot of styling elements and designed it to look like a conventional truck. But, still, the truck looks fresh and will be easily recognizable, thanks to the big lion logo on the grille.

The swept-back headlights are not so slim, yet add certain aggressiveness to the truck. The company also added LED Daytime Running Lamps which have a distinct resemblance to the Skoda Octavia’s DRLs. The unique grille details neither look hideous, nor beautiful. Peugeot has made ample use of chrome for the grille borders and in the fog lamp housing. The top border of the grille is embezzled with “PEUGEOT” lettering. The faux skid plate is finished in grey and adds a nice zing to the face.

The side profile is not as plain-Jane as you’d expect. The doors and wing mirrors are finished in chrome. The six-spoke wheels look good as well. But the black plastic cladding running at the bottom and around the wheel arches is conspicuous by its absence. This means that in case of off-roading, the body will take the impact directly. The roof rails are also finished in chrome. As for the rear of the Landtrek, there is an overdose of chrome. The tailgate handle, the badges, and even the bumper have the bling!

That’s A Lot Of Features For The Segment It Is Competing In

The odometer looks sporty with the speedometer on the left and tachometer on the right-hand side. The two-spoke steering is lifted from the 3008 crossover and comes with thumb contours. The dash is well laid-out and everything seems ergonomically sorted. Depending on the trim, you can choose to have the Landtrek as a five- or a six-seater. The latter comes with three seats at the front and three at the back. In the case of the five-seater, the two front seats are separated by the center armrest. When flipped down, the rear seats can bear a load of up to 220 pounds.

In terms of features, the top trim is offered with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits above the AC vents and looks like a floating unit. It supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and USB connections. It also comes with an in-built 10 GB hard drive. Other features include stuff like:

-* LED Headlights and Taillights

-* Automatic Dual-Zone Climate Control

-* Trailer Swing Control

-* 360-degree Camera System with up to Four Cameras

-* An Off-Road Camera Built Into The Rearview Mirror On The Passenger Side

-* Six Airbags

-* Electronic Stability Program

-* Hill Descent Control

-* Lane Departure Warning

You can also equip your Landtrek with the following optional accessories:

-* Mud and Snow tires

-* Chrome Roll Bar

-* Hard Top Glass

-* Thermoformed Body Protection

-* Protective Mats

A Basic Work Truck That Can Take In All Abuse

This model is not offered with fog lamps, but the plastic bumper features the same cutouts for them like the multipurpose version. If fog lamps aren’t offered as an additional accessory, then this was a pathetic cost-cutting exercise by the French automaker. Peugeot has dropped all chrome and shiny stuff on all the corners from this variant. Another interesting feature is that the single cab work truck will be offered without a rear bumper and thus, the tailgate can be operated at an 180-degree angle as well.

Two Engine Options On Offer

The former can be had with a six-speed Getrag manual transmission or a six-speed Punch automatic transmission. When opting for the automatic gearbox, you get three selectable drive modes as well – Sport, Eco, and Sequential. The diesel mill can be had only with the six-speed manual transmission.

Both engines will be available in the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. Among all the engine-drive combinations, the four-wheel-drive 2.4-liter mill doles out the best performance. In this guise, the Landtrek takes 11.2 seconds to hit the 62 mph mark from a standstill, before topping out at 110 mph. The towing capacity is rated at 6,000 pounds, whereas the payload capacity is rated at 2,400 pounds.

Final Thoughts

The Landtrek is the result of a collaboration between Peugeot and Chinese automaker Chang’an. Initially, the truck will be targeted at the Latin America and Sub-Sharan Africa markets. Although the Landtrek is based on a new platform, it is essentially the Chang’an Kaicene F70 at its core. PSA had previously announced its intentions of launching a one-ton truck globally to take on the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Our initial impressions suggest that the Landtrek is a capable vehicle that covers all the bases needed in a personal truck, and also as a work truck. There is no word on the pricing yet, but expect it to be on par with the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux. Do you think it will be as good in the real world as it is on paper?
