2020 Pininfarina PF0 Battista

The car that should relaunch Pininfarina after seven years since it last made a car

Pininfarina, the company best well known for its association with Ferrari, wants to break free from under the shade of the Prancing Horse and make a name for itself as the builder of the fastest car to come out of Italy. The name of this car? Battista, like the name of the company’s founder. The numbers that should firmly plant this car on the map? 1,900 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet, a 0 to 62 mph sprint in less than two seconds, and a top speed of about 250 mph. All done by an EV powertrain that’s capable of running over 300 miles between charges.

Reading those numbers it’s easy to dismiss the Pininfarina Battista as just another ludicrous car that will never actually become reality. Something like the Devel Sixteen, the Arabian hypercar that packs a V-16 engine that’s capable of 5,000 horsepower. That one was supposedly slated to start final testing this month. Or the equally insane Vector WX-8, Jerry Wiegert’s project that should’ve brought his once proud company back from the dead. He said 12 years ago that a 10-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-8 will power the car and that it will crank out 1,850 horsepower. More recently, Wiegert sold his two WX-3 prototypes to fund the project.

But the Battista is a more serious offering than both those elusive creations. First off, Pininfarina was bought by Mahindra four years ago for $190.6 million and, as we know, Mahindra has the financial power to throw cash at a project like this if so desires. With Pininfarina aiming to build just 150 of these, 50 dedicated to each of its three markets: Europe, America, and the Middle-East, we can expect people to actually come forth with pre-orders once it gets revealed at Geneva in a couple of weeks.

Pininfarina, once Ferrari’s preferred coachbuilder, is now busy establishing itself as a standalone automaker. It put its best foot forward by unveiling the radical Battista hypercar that promises to be one of the fastest four-wheeled things on the planet and now it’s doubling it down by announcing a whole range of models, the first of which will be an SUV. Fear not, however, as the Pura Vision isn’t your average sporty SUV as Pininfarina aims to deliver supercar-level performance under a skin that both resembles a four-door GT and the existing Battista. It sounds like a match made in heaven.

Coming with an outlandishly appointed cabin and a class-bending profile, the Pininfarina Pura Vision could seriously reduce the market share of Lamborghini’s Urus and Ferrari’s upcoming Purosangue. While we’re yet to feast our eyes with the pre-production prototype showcased to prospective customers during a series of VIP events held by Pininfarina in August during the Monterey Car Week, those that have are talking about a sleek and not overly complicated design so typical of Pininfarina, one that’ll only be matched by its impressive performance. At this stage of the game, the Pura Vision might become Pininfarina’s most important product so they have to get it right.

The Pininfarina K350 concept finally broke cover at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. Designed for Hong Kong-based automaker Hybrid Kinetic Group (HKG), the K350 is a fully electric SUV concept that the automaker is preparing to develop with the H600 and H500 electric sedan concepts. It’s still not confirmed if HKG is giving the green light to build any of these concepts, but if it does, look for the K350 SUV to be the most prominent of the three. Not only is it an EV, but it’s also an SUV, which, as we all know, is a segment that’s selling like hotcakes these days.

Italian styling on top, Chinese EV tech underneath

While Pininfarina is best known as the pen behind such head-turners as the ’67 275 GTB/4, the ’72 Dino 246 GTS, the modern Sergio, and a slew of other models from Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, and Maserati, lately the legendary Italian design house has focused more on wild and futuristic concepts, with recent examples including the H600 luxury sedan that debuted at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, as well as the five-seat K550 SUV and seven-seat K750 SUV at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show. Each of the three concepts listed is the product of a partnership between Pininfarina and the Chinese-based tech firm Hybrid Kinetic Group, and now, there’s a fourth model on offer. It’s called the HK GT, and it’s framed as an “elegant and eco-sustainable Gran Turismo with two souls,” offering both racing excitement, and comfortable eco-conscious cruising.

If there was ever a concept that truly embodied the long-standing partnership between Ferrari and Pininfarina, it would be the 2013 Ferrari Sergio. The concept burst onto the scene at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show as a tribute model to the late Sergio Pininfarina. Reports that the Sergio was earmarked for production first surfaced in September 2014, and a little over a month later, a new report indicated that Ferrari and Pininfarina were actually building production models of the radical concept. Now, the wait is over, as it was recently officially announced that the first Ferrari Sergio has been delivered to the SBH Royal Auto Gallery at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit in the United Arab Emirates.

Ferrari and Pininfarina, the two architects behind the Sergio Concept, built six production versions of the radical supercar, each coming with a price tag of $3 million. The price is admittedly way more than I can afford, but for the six individuals Ferrari invited to snatch up the limited-edition piece, spending $3 million on an ultra-exclusive supercar can be considered money well spent.

Unfortunately, all six models have already been spoken for. Based on the Ferrari 458 Spider, the roadster was "created to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse," as stated in a press release.

The car is not only striking to look at, it’s also, unsurprisingly, intended to be extremely driver oriented, as is emphasized in the press release: "An authentic open-top, it explicitly references the track, underscoring and intensifying its sense of sportiness, fun behind the wheel and the pleasure of design at its purest."

Each of the six Ferrari Sergios was carefully customized by its owner at a workshop in Maranello, where a large variety of colors, materials, and finishes were on hand to suit their personal tastes. The result, clearly, is a car that’s fast, beautiful, and absolutely unique.

2017 Pininfarina Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo

A dream concept could turn to reality really soon

Like most supercar brands that are starting off from scratch, Emerson Fittipaldi’s Pininfarina Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo suffers from not having the foundation that other supercar models from more established brands have. The car looks good on paper, but a model’s success isn’t determined on the parcel from which it’s drawn on or even on a full-bodied prototype that debuts at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The good news is that Fittipaldi Motors - the company started by the former F1 world champion - actually has plans to bring the EF7 to life.

The road to seeing the EF7 is going to be a long and difficult one to navigate. That’s usually what awaits start-ups who try to bring their works to the forefront. But Fittipaldi does have a few things on its side too, not the least of which is the drive and dedication to see the EF7 evolve into the production supercar he’s always envisioned it to be. He also has partners in the fold to help him get his project off the ground, including Pininfarina, whose work on the car’s design is immediately recognizable, and HWA AG, an AMG spinoff that prepares German touring cars.

The objective is clear, even if the execution is far from. Ultimately, Fittipaldi plans to build 39 units of the EF7, a number that’s tied into the number of races the 70-year old driver won during his long and illustrious career in both Formula One and Indycar.

Easier said than done, right? Well, we’re definitely rooting for the company to prove its skeptics wrong. It’d be nice to see a project car like the EF7 realize its full potential.

Pininfarina’s latest is ready to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show

Pininfarina was once the coachbuilder of coachbuilders and over the years has designed some of the most beautiful cars the world has to offer. The design house has worked with greats like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. But, it’s also done work for Chery, Changfeng, and even Hyundai. At the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Pininfarina is set to display its latest concept, the H600 00 a luxury sedan that’s said to offer the “perfect combination of pure design and eco-friendly technology.” Designed for Hybrid Kinetic Group, the few teaser images we have showcased a sporty and aggressive exterior that is sure to be on point with other Pininfarina designs to go with an interior that’s technologically advanced and fitted with the finest materials available.

Of course, at this point, there’s very little to go by as Pininfarina is waiting until Geneva kicks off on March 7th to spill all of the beans. But, it’s released enough shots to give us a somewhat accurate idea of what we can expect. Of course, we’re talking about Pininfarina here, so it’s far from likely that it will disappoint or not draw a huge crowd at one of the world’s greatest auto shows. So, with that said, let’s take a good look at the few photos we have and talk a little more about it before it makes its debut.

2016 Pininfarina H2 Speed

Italian design house makes a surprising reveal at Geneva

Remember when Pininfarina presented the Sergio Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show? Seems like ages ago, right? In truth, it’s only been three years and the Italian coach builder is known for some of the most memorable concept vehicles we’ve seen in Geneva. Back in 2010, it even celebrated its 80th anniversary by rolling out the 2uettottanta Concept. That was a good one too. I’m being a little nostalgic about this because Pininfarina’s latest Geneva offering is the H2 Speed, a hydrogen-powered race car. Wait, what?

To be fair, the H2 Speed does look like something Pininfarina would build. It’s got all the sexy lines that we’ve come to expect from the design house. It even tapped GreenGT to supply the hydrogen powertrain. Clearly, the people behind this concept did their due diligence on this one and by and large, it offers an impressive peek into what the race cars of the future could potentially look like.

But it’s not the Sergio Concept. It’s not the 2uettottanta. It’s not even the Cambiano that the Pininfarina showcased at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Maybe I’m just spoiled by what the company has done in previous years that I expected something entirely different than what we were all given. Maybe it’s got something to do with Mahindra’s recent acquisition of the company. Whatever the case may be, I don’t think people went to Geneva expecting to see this from Pininfarina. Not after what it’s done in the past.

2013 BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé Concept

Every time we see Pininfarina make the news with a new concept it’s developing, we can’t help but get excited about what the Italian coachbuilder has in store for us.

Well, it looks like Pininfarina is preparing something; a concept, it appears, that will make its debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este later this month.

The concept, which has been dubbed as the one-off Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, was designed and collaborated with BMW and comes as a notable successor to the BMW Z4 Zagato Coupe that BMW and Zagato also introduced at last year’s event.

While the two companies said nothing about it, it has been rumored that the concept is in fact a preview version of a possible 8-Series luxury car. We’re jut hopping it will become reality!

Updated 05/31/2013: BMW and Pininfarina have released a video of Fabio Filippini and Karim Habib outlining the design process and showing how the two companies worked together to create a car that was both a Bimmer and a Pininfarina.

2013 Sergio Pininfarina Tribute Concept by Pininfarina

Sergio Pininfarina, the former chairman of the legendary Italian design firm, Pininfarina, passed away last year after creating amazing cars for over 40 years. Now, Pininfarina announced it will unveil a very cool concept car as a tribute to this amazing man. The concept was officially unveiled today at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and just like the man that inspired it, it is simply astonishing.

The new Sergio concept was developed on a Ferrari 458 Italia chassis and is a two-seat barchetta that was inspired by the Ferrari models from the ’60s and the ’70s. It combines a very simple and clear style, with a front end that features a semi-floating development.

On the interior, the cockpit features an aerodynamic deflector that serves as a virtual windscreen. In order to provide the greatest aerodynamics, even the smallest detail of the concept - including the rear-view mirror - features a fluid form.

Under the hood, the concept keeps the same V-8 engine as the Ferrari 458 Spider, but thanks to its more aerodynamic body, the new Sergio concept will go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and up to a top speed of 198 mph.

2008 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Convertible Hyperion by Pininfarina

Way back in 2008, Pininfarina – a custom coach builder – took a look at the $400K Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Convertible and simply thought it just wasn’t good enough. So Pininfarina took this nearly half-million-dollar machine and created a one-off custom vehicle out of it. The maker then dubbed it the Hyperion, which was taken from an Ancient Greek Titan.

Much like its closest competitor, Bentley, Rolls-Royce has always been one of those car companies that you either loved or hated, mostly due to their gaudy exteriors and even more outlandish pricing. For those that love them, but just need a little something extra, there is no shortage of custom car builders that will customize them to your liking.

Despite the number of custom car builders modifying these ultra-luxury cars, none can touch the uniqueness and flashiness of the Hyperion. Pininfarina took special care to closely integrate a vintage look – taking styling cues from the 1930s and 1940s – with modern technology and feel.

This monster of a luxury car originally debuted at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It then made an appearance at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show before going off to its rightful owner, Roland Hall.

2012 Pininfarina Cambiano

Looking ahead to the 2012 Geneva Motor Show this March, Italian coach builder Pininfarina has officially unveiled the first teaser image of their latest ground-breaking creation: the Cambiano.

As is the case with a lot of teasers coming out these days for Geneva, Pininfarina is keeping a closed lid on any information surrounding the Cambiano, opting only for a few descriptive sentences to kick-start our imaginations into complete overdrive.

In the case of this intriguing concept, Pininfarina has bared this nugget of information describing the car: "it is an elegant and refined sport sedan, conceived with great attention to the environment, both as to the engine and as to the materials’ choice."

Reading between the lines, it appears that the car could be some sort of hybrid sports car that carries the company’s distinctive and provocative styling. Consider us intrigued. As far as the name of choice is concerned, Pininfarina chose Cambiano as a tribute to the city hosting the Pininfarina Group’s headquarters. It’s also no coincidence that the car is being prepared as a celebratory model of sorts to honor of the 30th anniversary of the Styling Center and the 10th anniversary of the Engineering Center, two branches of Pininfarina that have played critical roles in the design and build of a lot of their ultra-exclusive exotics.

We’ll have more info surrounding the Cambiano in the weeks and days leading up to the Geneva Motor Show. For now, you can ogle over the teaser image of the car, which is what we’ve been doing for some time now.

UPDATE 01/13/2012: Pininfarina has unveiled the second teaser for their Cambiano concept; an image that reveals part of the side of the vehicle. It looks as though the Cambiano will have a short bonnet and a set of large alloy wheels. There also seems to be no air inlets, leading us to believe this could be a full-electric vehicle.

UPDATE 01/19/2012: We are getting one step closer to the official opening of the Geneva Motor Show and Pininfarina is offering us a new teaser image of their Cambiano concept. This was shows off the intricate detailing of the roof. Enjoy!

2012 Pininfarina Coupe Concept

While Pininfarina is busy designing models for Ferrari, concept designer Peter Norris is taking a break from his job in the video games and entertainment industry to design a future luxury sports car concept that is "clean, unfussy, elegant and fast." These attributes led him to the Pininfarina Coupe Concept, a front engined model combined with a rear wheel drive system.

Norris’ design inspiration for the Pininfarina Coupe Concept came from the love of his very own Fiat Coupe 16v Turbo with some Ferrari lines thrown in to polish it over. The Pininfarina Coupe’s look is characterized by the ultra low roofline and the accentuated front and rear fenders. The sleek profile is exaggerated further with large wheels that visually shorten the height of the sports car. At the back of the Pininfarina are a set of C-shaped LED taillights.

When talking about his concept, Peter Norris said: "much of my work is focused strongly on science fiction and the distant future, but with this project I wanted to create an elegant and unfussy design with classic lines that could be on the road today."

“The Pininfarina styling inside as much as outside just oozes with Italian flair and really was, and still is different to anything else on the road. Some people have referred to it as a “baby Ferrari”.

Somehow we don’t see a luxury sports car like this toting around the 190 HP 2.0L 16V Turbo engine as seen on the Fiat Coupe, but since the Pininfarina Coupe Concept was also inspired by Ferrari, we’d love to see something along the lines of the 458 Italia’s 570 HP 4,499 cc V8 engine. Not a likely scenario, but we can dream.
