Porsche has been going around the world, breaking lap records one after the other with the new 911 GT2 RS. This time, however, it sets a new record instead of breaking one. The virgin racetrack in Australia gets smoked by the 911 GT2 RS, and we are quite positive this record will stay for a long time.

About The Racetrack

Australia has no dearth of racetracks; be it the temporary ones, or the permanent circuits. This year, the land down under gets the world’s second largest racing circuit in the world, called Bend Motorsport Park. The track is 7.7 kilometers (4.8 miles) long and has been built at a cost of $100 million. It is situated in the town of Tailem Bend, an hour’s drive from Adelaide in South Australia, and is second only to the Nürburgring in Germany.

Who Set The Record?

After shattering records at the Nordschleife, Porsche let its seasoned racer, Warren Luff, race the new 911 GT2 RS at the Bend Motorsport. Luff is a test driver for Motor magazine and has been racing for Porsche for quite some time. He finished second in the domestic Carrera Cup as well. This time, Luff set the record with a lap time of 3:24.079. Since this is the first record to be set, we are not very sure how fast this is, in relative terms.

About The Car

The 911 GT2 has been around for 25 years now. The car is currently in its fourth generation and was unveiled at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The GT2 RS is the fastest 911 ever built. It gets a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder that produces 690 horses and 550 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, or as Porsche calls it – the PDK. The car has a top speed of 210 mph and goes from standstill to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds! No wonder it breaks records with such ease. It has a production run limited to 1000 units and retails around $300,000 in the U.S.

It’s Not A Legend, It’s A Legend Killer!

The 911 GT2 RS has displayed its dominance in a lot of places already. In September 2017, the German speedster clocked 6:47.25, beating the 6:52.01 set by Lamborghini Huracan Performante. This made it the fastest street-legal production car ever to grace the Nürburgring. According to the record-keepers at FastestLaps.com, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS also holds the lap records at Hockenheim, Willow Springs, Magny-Cours, and Sachsenring, to name a few. Such an over-achieving child the 911 GT2 RS is. We are sure Porsche and Volkswagen are proud of it.

Our Take

The sheer display of power by the 911 GT2 RS is gaining a lot of goodwill for Porsche in the motorsport industry; not that it lacked any. Open the record books, and you’ll find its name etched into so many racetracks already. Is there any car that can stop this little beast from steamrolling the records?
