What makes the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition special?

Well, you’re looking at a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and that’s itself a special car. But with the Sports Cup Edition, Porsche dug deep into its motorsport design drawer and came up with a one-off package that will only be on sale for a limited time - although Porsche doesn’t say exactly how the availability interval is going to be, only that you’ll only be able to buy it solely from Germany starting from the 14th of October 2019, at one of the 88 eligible German Porsche Centres.

Stick around to find out more about it.

Porsche made a few calls to its Style department as it wanted to deliver a truly special livery for the limited-edition Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition. The calls weren’t left unanswered, and as a result, the special edition got a black and white base exterior ornate with red highlights, since red is Porsche’s traditional motorsport color.

The carmaker’s Style arm went for an asymmetric design for the livery in the sense that the two parallel red stripes that flow from front to rear are offset on the driver’s side. The car’s lower profile benefits from the stripe treatment as well, but with just one stripe adorning each side, complemented by the ’15’ decal, which marks the aforementioned anniversary.

The 718 Cayman GT4 SCE rides on 20-inch black sating gloss wheels with Guards Red flanges, while the brake calipers are painted black.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition - Interior

Remember when we mentioned Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur earlier? Well, the interior of the 718 Cayman GT4 SCE was the division’s playground, so to speak. The cabin is finished in a combination of black leather, and Alcantara seasoned with red accents to induce the same motorsport-like vibe that is present on the outside: the seat belts are Guards Red, just like the door-opening loops, with the package being rounded up by contrasting red stitching on the dashboard and door panels.

It’s also Alcantara that wraps the 12 o'clock-marked steering wheel and the gear lever - both of which receive the by-now-omnipresent red markings.

With this being about Porsche and motorsport, the inclusion of carbon fiber isn’t supposed to raise any eyebrows. The material can be found on the decorative trim on the passenger’s side as well as on the door entry guard together with the ‘718 Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition’ lettering. The other trim elements present around the cabin - on the doors, dashboard, and center consoles - are made of black brushed aluminum. The finishing touches are applied by a set of individual floor mats with black leather borders and Guards Red stitching. The driver’s seatback is trimmed in red Alcantara, while for the passenger’s Porsche opted for black Alcantara.

What about the powertrain?

Sorry, guys, there’s no word on mechanical mods for the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 SCE, so it’s safe to assume that the powertrain has remained untouched. This is not too disappointing come to think of it, especially if we consider that the current 718 Cayman GT4 packs the biggest engine ever seen on a Cayman.

In this standard setup, the Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition dashes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds (0 to 100 kilometer per hour happens in 4.4 seconds) en route to a top speed of 188 miles per hour (301 kilometers per hour). The regular Cayman GT4 employs a six-speed manual, which is also the case for the Sports Cup Edition model.

In a way, Porsche didn’t need to make altering mods to the GT4 SCE’s chassis since the model it is based on already came with such tweaks, including the track-ready PASM setup (Porsche Active Suspension Management) that can take the car 1.2 inches (30 millimeters) closer to the ground thanks to adaptive dampers on all corners, while also allowing for camber, toe, and anti-roll bar parameters to be tuned manually.

Besides PASM, every Cayman GT4 leaves the factory with a mechanical limited-slip differential imbued with PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) and uniquely-set-up ABS, ESC, and traction control systems. The last two allow two-stage adjustment for an even better tweaking of the car’s corner-carving abilities.
