It doesn’t have a roof and it’s more powerful than the first 993 Remastered Porsche 911

Gunther Werks’ remastered 993-generation Porsche 911 now has a drop-top sibling. The new model, called the 993 Speedster Remastered, is the latest bespoke creation from the California-based tuning firm. It’s more powerful than its coupe counterpart, and with the roof get lopped off, it also looks like a true speedster. Only 25 units of the 993 Speedster Remastered will be built. There’s no word yet on pricing, but with the coupe version fetching $565,000, expect the speedster to carry a price that’s closer to $600,000.

The Speedster 993 Remastered is yet another feather in the cap of Gunther Werks. In keeping with the Porsche’s "speedster" label, Gunther Werks chopped off the 993’s roof. The roof’s removal did come with stability issues, and the tuner addressed that by stiffening the car’s chassis. The rear seats were removed and replaced with chassis-strengthening materials. An integrated roll cage was also installed for added rigidity. A new carbon fiber front spoiler was also added in the front and the ducktail-style spoiler at the back has been revised to improve aerodynamics.

To compensate for the added weight, Gunther Werks replaced the Porsche’s hood with one that’s 25 percent lighter.

Hollow carbon seats were also installed in the cabin, and the set of single-piece, Fuchs-style, forged aluminum wheels that the Porsche sits on is lighter compared to the set it replaces. These wheels attach with centerlocks instead of the traditional five longest to further reduce the car’s weight. Prospective customers can go the full speedster treatment and order a unit with a low raked windscreen or a unit without a windscreen at all.

The interior also received modifications. The seats are closer to the ground compared to the coupe version to keep the driver and passenger out of the airflow. The pedal box was also replaced and the entire cabin was reworked using weatherproof materials.

At the heart of the Speedster 993 Remastered is the same 4.0-liter naturally aspirated, air-cooled, flat-six Rothsport Racing engine that you can find in the coupe version. With some assistance from Eisenlohr Racing and JRZ, the engine comes with a modest improvement in output compared to the 435-horsepower and 335-pound-feet-of-torque that comes out of the coupe version’s power plant.

We already know what Gunther Werks’ 993 Remastered Porsche 911 is capable of. It cracked a whip at Laguna Seca in December 2020 on its way to posting a lap time of 1:30.99. It posted a lap time that was only 0.2 seconds slower than the McLaren P1 and just a second off the pace of the Porsche 918 Spyder. It was faster around the track compared to the Ferrari 488 GTB, Mercedes-AMG GT R, and the previous-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Consider what the coupe version did and imagine what the speedster is capable of if it takes a run around the race track. That’s a lap time that we wouldn’t dare miss.

    • Expensive
    • Limited to just 25 units
    • Could be a handful to drive

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read full bio
