Porsche has announced the facelifted Panamera for the 2022 model year. It comes with a series of upgrades including a more aggressive look, and a bigger battery capacity of 17.9-kWh, which is set to boost the efficiency by up to 30-percent. Other upgrades are based on optimizations, but these new ranges of plug-in hybrids provide improved dynamics and efficiency for every taste.

How many hybrid variants are available under the Panamera range?

Porsche boasts about being the only brand to introduce three plug-in hybrid models under one category, but they are not wrong. You can literally choose between three Panamera Hybrid variants: 4 E-Hybrid, 4S E-Hybrid, and Turbo S E-Hybrid. All three variants have the same 100-kW electric motor sitting inside the PDK gearbox. The 4 E-Hybrid is the entry-level hybrid Panamera model. It is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 and an electric motor with a combined output of 455 horsepower. The torque output is 700 Nm which is about 516 pound-feet.

The AWD and PDK come standard with all the Panamera hybrids. The 4 S E-Hybrid is next-in-line and is slightly more powerful than the base 4 E-Hybrid. Using the same engine, Porsche has been able to squeeze out 552 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The most powerful Panamera is, of course, the Turbo S E-Hybrid, which is backed by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine and the same electric motor from the other two variants. The combined power output is a massive 690 horsepower and 641 pound-feet of torque.

How does the new Panamera Hybrid look?

The exterior comes with mild visual upgrades for the 2022 model year facelift. The Sport Design front fascia packs broader air intake vents and the integrated daytime running lights look great. The already gorgeous taillight strip adds more “drama”, as per Porsche's claims. It means that they have worked with the lighting animations to provide more dynamism. New 21- and 22-inch wheel designs are offered as well. The dimensions remain similar to the outgoing model year, but the curb weight has gone up due to the increased battery capacity.

Battery and E-Power: Everything you need to know

The previously fitted 14.1-kWh battery pack has been replaced by a larger 17.9-kWh battery capacity without actually increasing the size of the physical battery. This was made possible due to the advanced cell chemistry. Porsche claims that the increased capacity will enhance the economy by up to 30-percent, which is about 40 miles of pure electric drive. There is an optional 7.2-kW onboard charger that will fast charge the battery, but Porsche did not disclose the charging time. Porsche also introduced the E-Hold and E-Charge tech with the new hybrid Panamera ranges. The E-Hold feature forces the use of the combustion engine and holds the power level of the battery which can later be used to drive the final part of your journey or you can get really sporty. The E-Charge tech basically charges the battery with the help of the combustion engines. The excess energy produced by the engine is converted into electric power and passed on to the battery which can be charged up to 80-percent for better battery efficiency.

Final Thoughts

Porsche’s ultra-luxury performance sedan, the Panamera, is a serious looker, and the new facelifted plug-in hybrids are even better. The Panamera E-Hybrid models are built to travel in both style and comfort. With the maximum performance offered in all three models, Porsche is leading the hybrid performance game quite well.
