2023 Porsche Macan EV

The upcoming Porsche Macan EV was ambushed by the paparazzi while charging its batteries

It is clear Porsche, like many other carmakers, is working towards electrification. Although the Porsche Taycan, with all its versions, makes it apparent, the upcoming all-electric Porsche Macan is the next in line to go electric. New spy footage captures the Macan EV doing cold-weather testing, accompanied by two Cayenne pilot cars. It also seems like the test prototype is experiencing difficulties in the cold, snowy climate – something Porsche is currently addressing as the vehicle nears production.

This sighting of the Porsche Macan EV includes two different models, all being pushed to the limit in extremely cold temperatures. These images reveal the new front end with split headlights, although, there’s still some very thick camo, so we can’t mack out mich else. There is a retractable spoiler behind the rear window, and it was extending above speeds of approximately 50 km/h. Porsche isn’t planning to launch the Macan EV until at least 2023, so there’s still some significant development and tweaking that can take place between now and then.

The future of Porsche’s small SUV is under question, as we still don’t know whether the model will become fully electric or it would still offer internal-combustion engines. At one point, Porsche had what was called the dual Macan strategy, which would offer both an EV and combustion-powered version of the SUV. However, with Euro 7 emission standards, an EV-only Macan is becoming the only feasible option.

On the other hand, the test prototype looks quite different than the current Porsche Macan, at least from the front, where we see some similarities with the Taycan. The EV Macan was at a charging station, which allowed for some close footage. The test drivers quickly covered the prototype, which seems to have a coupe-like roofline, compared to the current Macan.

The spy footage also shows the Porsche’s frameless doors and the interior, although heavily camouflaged looks to have been totally redesigned, with a central infotainment screen, sticking out of the dashboard center console.

After four hours of charging, the prototype was ready to limp back to base, with the Cayenne duo following behind. The electric Porsche Macan is going to debut later in 2022, as a 2023 model. Meanwhile, the combustion version of the compact SUV is going to be discontinued in 2024, leaving the upcoming all-electric version as the only available option, if you want a compact Porsche SUV.
