Meet the Qoros K-EV – A Concept Set to Enter Production by 2019
In the midst of a massive automotive revolution in China, a small company known as Chery Quantum Automotive Corporation was birthed out of the blue. By 2011, the name was changed to Qoros Auto Co. Ltd, with responsibility split between Chery and Kenon Holdings. During it’s time in existence, the Chinese brand has put just two names into production – the Qoros 3 and Qoros 5 SUV. In fairness, the 3 can be had in SUV, sedan, hatchback, and GT, but they all look nearly identical outside of a few structural changes. So, one could say they have 5 models on the market, if you really want to get technical about things. Now, in what one could only call an excessively bold move for a new-ish company, the brand has debuted a new concept called the K-EV. It’s an electric vehicle that is said to be able to hit 62 mph in 2.6 seconds and has a range of around 310 miles. Full details on the electric drivetrain are scarce, but the that doesn’t matter because there’s something crazy going on with its exterior design.
I mean, seriously, what is going on here? This thing has four doors, three of which are wildly different. The rear passenger door slides open, the front passenger door is front-hinged and opens like a regular car door, while the driver’s door is a gullwing door. I mean it’s certainly interesting, but very out-of-the-box. What’s even crazier, however, is that this concept supposedly previews a model that will go into production in 2019. That I really want to see, but for now, keep reading to learn a little more about this unique and bold concept.

Koenigsegg And Qoros Working On 1.6-liter Engine That Could Produce More Than 400 Horsepower
It wasn’t that long ago that I gave you a run down on how the FreeValve camless engine works. Then, at the Beijing Auto Show, it was announced that Qoros will be the first manufacturer to use FreeValve’s camless engine technology. At the time, it was displayed next to the 2016 Qoros Qamless Concept, a car based on the Qoros 3 Hatchback and a preview of what production model may be the first to use the technology. It’s been nearly a month since then, but in a recent interview between Carbuzz and Christian von Koenigsegg, it was disclosed that Koenigsegg is working on a 1.6-liter engine that could produce 400 horsepower or more.
We’re not sure if it will be the engine that will be used in production model derived from the Qamless Concept, but it looks like Koenigsegg and Qoros are working together on the project, so it is quite possible. At this time, the two brands are simply developing a concept proof, but that is the next step in the usage of a camless engine in a production vehicle.
In the interview, CvK said, “We are currently working on a 1.6-liter engine with Chinese carmaker Qoros that will have the potential to produce 400 horsepower or more. The same principles with which we designed the Agera and Regera engines can be applied to these smaller engines. By reducing the bore and elongating the stroke of the piston, we are able to lessen the heat losses from the engine.”
Granted, it’s not a lot of information to go by at this point, but it does show that both Qoros and Koenigsegg are serious about evolving the internal combustion engine. While this new conceptual engine may not be the exact model that will go into the production version of the Qamless Concept, it probably won’t be far off from the production engine. The ICE may be slowly dying off as we make the transition to alternative fuels like the electricity and hydrogen, but the camless engine may extend the life of the ICE for a little while longer.

2016 Qoros Qamless Concept
There were a number of interesting vehicles at the Beijing Auto Show this year. We had the new Audi TT-RS, the Mazda CX-4, and a really interesting concept from Chery called the FV2030. However, there was one concept car that was sitting at Qoros’ stand that everyone seemed to neglect at the show. The concept is called the Qoros Qamless, and it symbolizes the work put in by Koenigsegg and Freevalve to develop a new valvetrain that doesn’t require a camshaft.
So you’re probably asking yourself “why Qoros?” Well, I have an answer for that too. It is because Qoros has partnered with Freevalve to create the first production vehicle that uses Freevalve’s new valvetrain technology. The Qamless concept is a preview of the production model that is based on the Qoros 3 SUV. Despite the fact that the concept has gotten very little coverage out of its debut at the auto show, it is a pretty big deal because the Qamless engine promises better performance, improved efficiency, and fewer emissions output while shedding the weight of a traditional engine with more than one camshaft.
Since the concept itself is pretty cool, and the engine represents the next evolutionary stage of the internal combustion engine, we are going to take a closer look at it. There is no timetable for when the Qamless engine will being making it into a Qoros production vehicle, but you can bet neither Freevalve or Qoros is going to waste any time. There is a lot to talk about, so let’s put on our muck boots and dive in.

Chinese Automaker Qoros Will Be The First To Use Freevalve’s Camless Engine Technology
Earlier this year, I brought you the breakdown on the FreeValve camless engine and how it worked. The technology itself had been fiddled with for a while from various companies, but up until now, it hasn’t been a feasible option to use production vehicles, so the camless engine has yet to take off. Well, all that is about to change, as Freevalve – a sister company of Koenigsegg – has found a home for its camless engine with Chinese automaker Qoros.
It was probably one of the most unnoticed vehicles, but a Qoros concept named “Qamless” was actually on display at the Beijing Auto Show this year along with a display model of the freevalve engine sitting next to it. The concept car was based on the Qoros 3 Hatchback that is already on sale in the Chinese market. There is no telling when the concept car will move over into production, but Freevalve’s CEO Urban Carlsson has said that the partnership between freevalve and Qoros will help the company move into a production application.
For those of you who don’t know about Freevalve’s camless engine, it uses pneumatic-hydraulic-electric direct valve control that, in theory, allows infinite valve timing and cylinder deactivation. The engine doesn’t have the need for a throttle body and relies on pressurized air and oil for vital operation functions. As Christian von Koenigsegg has put it, the switch to camless engines is comparable to the leap from carburetors to direct injection. It is impossible to say how long it will take for the camless engine to hit major manufacturers, or if it ever will. Surely, that will depend on how reliable and efficient the engine proves to be when the Qoros Qamless goes into production.

Chinese car companies still have a pretty limited stake in any market outside of China itself. The reasons why could make up an entire article on their own, but Chinese auto manufacturers have been trying to increase their presence in other markets — partly by teaming up with foreign companies. This is why Chery Automobiles teamed up with Kenon Holdings of Singapore to form a new company called Qoros with an eye to sell cars all over the world. That was in 2007, and since then the company has debuted its first model, the 3, at the Geneva Motor Show.
The follow up to the Qoros 3 is the Qoros 5, a new flagship model for the brand that is also being shown to the world first in Europe. But, the 5 is being shown at the Milan Expo and not an actual car show, with its actual car show debut coming later at the Guangzhou show. That all suggests that Qoros is playing it a bit safe with the 5. It’s not unusual for such a new company, but showing the 5 in Europe and putting out a press release in English, is a big step that a lot of other, larger Chinese firms don’t bother with yet.

Founded as a joint venture between Chinese automaker Chery and Israel Corporation, Qoros Auto was established in 2007 during a peak time in the development of China automotive industry. It’s main goal is to compete against well-established manufacturers in Europe and Asia before expanding to other continents. After signing a cooperation agreement with Magna Steyr in 2009, Qoros completed its first prototype in 2011. Two years later, the first production car, the Qoros 3, made its debut at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show. On sale in China since late 2013, the 3 Sedan also spawned a hatch and a wagon, all of which were penned by ex-Mini designer Gert Hildebrand. As we pass onto the 2015 model year, Qoros is launching the fourth vehicle underpinned by its front-wheel-drive platform. This time it’s a crossover that goes by the name 3 City SUV.
As the name suggests, we’re dealing with a compact, car-like crossover. In fact, the City SUV is just a perched 3 hatch with plastic cladding around the edges and no off-road skills whatsoever. With Qoros one of the many Chinese automakers that could start selling cars in North America, we decided to take a closer look at this crossover and find out whether it would be a good fit for the U.S. market or not. Check out the full details after the break.

The Qoros 3 made its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show. The sedan is a Chinese car that looks to crack the western market.
The new Qoros automotive brand is looking to go International with their cars. Chinese cars do not have a great sales history in Europe or the United States, but the new brand is trying to change all of that.
The first car that will be available for sale is the Qoros 3 Sedan. The compact sedan was designed with marketing to China and Europe in mind. Unlike other cars to have come out of China that have a reputation of being knockoffs, the new car has styling all its own. Beyond what looks like good styling, the company is promising to build a quality car. If the quality can match the styling of the car then Qoros could do for the Chinese car market what Honda did for the Japanese market.
Beyond the compact sedan that is close to production, a 3 hybrid hatchback concept was also presented in Shanghai. A 3 Estate concept was also unveiled at the show, which showed the direction that the young company wants to take their cars.
