A Rebel firmly conformed to the Dark Side

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is no stranger to kicking out special editions of products. We’ve even seen special editions of special editions – and that’s exactly what’s happening here. Introducing the Ram 1500 Rebel Black. This truck builds on the Ram 1500 Rebel by adding several black accent pieces both inside and out. Nothing of the Rebel’s impressive off-road capability is lost, so it continues to be one of the most bodacious option packages available on any full-size pickup.

The Rebel Black shares its bones with the standard Ram 1500 Rebel. That means it comes with the bold R-A-M grille with its unique snout, stamped steel bumper, fender flares, sport hood, Rebel-specific wheels, and huge R-A-M lettering across the tailgate.

The special edition package is only offered with the Ram Crew Cab powered by the venerable 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or the respectable 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. Both engine choices come backed by the TorqFlite 8 eight-speed automatic transmission. Despite its off-road theme, the Ram Rebel can be had in RWD or 4WD.

Regardless of engine or drivetrain choice, the Rebel’s claims to fame remain. They include the mild factory lift kit with air ride, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, underbody skid plates, front tow hooks, and limited slip rear differential.

“Adding the Rebel Black package to an already aggressive off-road truck will continue feeding the momentum Rebel is creating for the Ram Truck brand,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand, FCA Global. “The Ram Rebel is unique in the full-size truck segment.”

So let’s explore what makes the Ram 1500 Rebel Black so different.

Updated 01/23/2017: We added a series of photos taken during the car’s official debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

What Makes the Ram 1500 Rebel Black Special

The 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Black is based on the “standard” Ram 1500 Rebel, but a handful of visual touches set this truck apart. On the outside, the Rebel Black adds gloss black paint to the Rebel’s wheels and a matte black color to the “brush guard” – what Ram calls the center section of the front bumper. Normally this piece is a satin silver color. Now the front has a monochromatic theme to it, with the grille and bumper looking like a continuous piece of hardware.

Interestingly enough, the Ram 1500 Rebel Black can be had with any of the colors already offered on the standard Rebel truck. They include Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Bright Silver Metallic, Flame Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, and four two-tone combinations with the bottom color being Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl.

The blackness continues. Inside with black anodized bezels on the doors, center console, instrument panel, and gauge cluster trim rings. The seats are fully black and continue to feature the tire tread pattern found on the Toyo Open Country A/T II tires found under the truck. The front seats are also heated for those frosty winter days. For those fond of leather, optional Katzkin leather seats are available – in black, of course.

These interior modifications are a big departure from the Ram Rebel’s normal interior. Black seats tops are accented by red leather along the sides, back, and red plastic around the seat base. The anodized aluminum trim along the dash, instrument panel, and doors are also normally red. For those who might not like the red accented interior, the Rebel Black is certainly a welcomed addition to the Ram Rebel lineup.

The Rebel Black package does not hinder the availability of other option and convenience packages. These include the Luxury Group, the Rear Camera and Park Assist Group, the Trailer Tow Mirror and Brake Control Group, and the Remote Start and Security Alarm Group.

The Luxury Group adds auto-dimming and power-folding exterior mirrors with turn signals and puddle lamps, a glove box light, LED bed lighting, an overhead console with a universal garage door opener, rear dome light, an auto-dimming interior mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors on the sun visors, and an under-hood light. The Luxury Group costs $695.

The Rear Camera and Park Assist Group is a bit more self-explanatory, but adds front and rear parking sensors and the ParkView rear backup camera. It costs $595. The same can be said for the Trailer Tow Mirror and Brake Control Group option. It would be a worthwhile package for someone planning to frequently tow. Its $460 cost seems quite reasonable. And of course, the Remote Start and Security Alarm Group adds the ability to remotely start the truck’s engine, while the alarm helps protect the truck from theft. That package adds another $395.

The blackness continues. Inside with black anodized bezels on the doors, center console, instrument panel, and gauge cluster trim rings. The seats are fully black and continue to feature the tire tread pattern found on the Toyo Open Country A/T II tires found under the truck.

Other options include a 32-gallon fuel tank, a Ram-branded tonneau cover, the handy RamBox cargo bed, a power sunroof, a rear window defroster, black side steps, and a spray-in bed liner.

As for pricing, the 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Black starts at $45,590 plus a $1,320 destination fee. That is a sizeable increase from the 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel, which started at $43,270.

Expect Ram to announced more information and release more photos of the 2017 Ram 1500 Rebel Black when the truck official debuts at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show happening January 9 and 10. The truck will begin arriving in dealer showrooms in March of 2017.
