Ram sure knows how to keep its product portfolio active. Lately, a lot of our attention has been on the 2020 Ram 1500, which comes with the third-gen EcoDiesel engine and also created a record of sorts by claiming the Top Safety Pick+ award. Logically, this would mean a drop in the sales for the 2019 model. However, Ram is keeping the 2019 1500 active by launching new packages and special editions of the truck. This time, we get the new Mojave Sand Package that’s offered on the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock. The truck comes with a host of aesthetic changes to distinguish it from the standard Ram 1500. But, is it worth buying?

What Makes the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock Mohave Sand Package Special?

The major changes appear on the outside. In the front, the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock with the Mohave Sand Package features ‘RAM’ lettering instead of the logo. The standard muscular hood is replaced with a new sports performance hood to further enhance the looks. This is a good move because I cannot fathom the Ram 1500 in this shade with chrome detailing. Even the wing mirrors and door handles receive the black treatment. The other big change includes a set of 20-inch set of black-painted wheels.

The truck doesn’t come with changes on the inside, or under the hood. It is still available with the same engine options, including a 3.6-liter, V-6 Pentastar engine that lays out 305 horses and 269 pound-feet of torque. The other one is a 5.7-liter, V-8 HEMI engine that makes 395 ponies and 410 pound-feet of twist. The Ram 1500 Classic can tow up to 12,750 pounds and haul up to 2,300 pounds. Both the engines are mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The 1500 Classic Warlock can be had in either two-wheel or four-wheel-drive guise and in either Quad Cab or Crew Cab configurations. The company has priced the 2019 Ram Classic 1500 Warlock with the Mohave Sand Package from $35,345, plus $1,695 destination charges.

What Is Warlock All About?

The latest emotion that automakers are capitalizing on is ‘nostalgia’. Ram is the latest one to do so with the ‘Warlock’ term. The moniker originally hit the surface in 1976, when the first production Dodge Warlock was introduced following the public's positive response to a pickup originally designed as an auto show concept vehicle. The Warlock was a factory-personalized pickup that could "play as hard as it works”, as the period literature puts it. The truck was a big move from the typical pickup trucks and it came with bucket seats, fancy wheels, fat tires, and chrome-plated running boards, to name a few. It went on till 1979, and forty years later, the moniker has been brought to life by Mopar and Ram through the 2019 1500.

Even though there is a newer model for the taking, the Ram 1500 Classic is a great truck for what it has to offer. For starters, it uses a unique link-coil rear suspension that makes it a good handler even on rough roads or with heavy stuff on your ass. Other features, such as the RamBox bedside storage, hidden bins, and a flat-load floor, offer unique solutions for cargo management. This is immensely helpful if you tend to carry a lot of stuff on a regular basis.

The standard Ram 1500 Warlock itself stands apart from the rest of the range, and this package makes it even better. The standard Warlock models features a grille borrowed from the Rebel models and powder-coated bumpers to differentiate itself on the outside. Inside the cabin, Ram has laid out a Diesel Gray cloth upholstery as standard. It also comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a seven-inch digital gauge cluster display, rear park assist, LED bed lighting, and power-folding mirrors. Goodies like heated front seats and the 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment are optional.

The Warlock models come in ten different shades, other than the Mohave Sand - Blue Streak, Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Diamond Black, Delmonico Red, Flame Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel, Pearl White, and True Blue.

Final Thoughts

Although this package does not change anything mechanically or inside the cabin, it sure brings about a nice aesthetic change. The Mohave Sand shade will draw polarizing opinions, but I actually liked it quite a bit. Since the package does not demand a high premium, I believe it should move swiftly off the factory floors.
