The Rolls-Royce Ghost Returns With Evolutionary Styling and A New V-12 Engine
While most carmakers keep their vehicles on the market for five to seven years per generation, Rolls-Royce doesn’t redesign its nameplates unless they get close to or even surpass the 10-year mark. The old Phantom survived for an impressive 14 years, while the outgoing Ghost is now in its 11th year in showrooms. Come 2020, and the full-size model was finally redesigned to join the newer Phantom and the Cullinan, the brand’s first-ever SUV. Just like the Phantom, the new-generation Ghost remains familiar on the outside, but it brings a new platform, engine, technology, and a more comfortable interior to the table.
2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan
The luxury SUV bug has bitten its share of automakers in recent years. Up to now, Rolls-Royce has been an exception, but come 2018 and the British automaker launched its very own people hauler. Better late than never, Rolls-Royce. News of Rolls’ interest in developing a luxury SUV came to light in 2015, when Rolls-Royce was already working on a brand-new platform for the Phantom sedan. As expected, the SUV is based on the same underpinnings and shares many styling cues and features with the luxury four-door.
Although Rolls-Royce has no history with SUVs, the company cited vehicles from the past which have been successful in events such as the Scottish Reliability Trials and the Alpine Trials, and had the ability to carry their owners "over challenging terrain with absolute reliability and comfort" in Australia, India, and other parts of the world. On top of being Rolls-Royce’s first-ever SUV, the Cullinan also introduces many new technologies to the brand, including all-wheel drive, an off-road driving mode, and a suspension that actively extends the dampers to keep every wheel on the ground in rough terrain. Rolls-Royce Reveals Next-Gen Phantom VIII
The Phantom has been around for almost a century now, first seeing the light of day back in 1925. Since it was first introduced, the Phantom has been the conveyance of choice for high-profile business people, politicians, influential musicians, and other folks who are simply better than you. The seventh-generation model saw a debut in 2003 as the first new Roller under BMW ownership, and now, there’s a follow-up called the Phantom VIII. Revealed at Bonhams Auction House in London, the British make rolled out the New Phantom in a livestream event this afternoon, while also plugging a new exhibition on the nameplate that includes a few particularly noteworthy examples, including the Queen’s Phantom VI, Fred Astaire’s Phantom I, and John Lennon’s Phantom V, among others. Standout features for the new VIII include an updated exterior style, a new turbocharged V-12 engine, a fresh architecture, and a cabin space that puts a suite at the Four Seasons to shame.
But of course it does, right? Rolls-Royce is proudly continuing the tradition of labeling the Phantom as “The Best Car in the World,” so above and beyond simple excess isn’t just possible – it’s a necessity. Rolls Royce brought a very special car to the 2013 Geneva motor show, and it happens to be the fastest Rolls Royce ever produced. The Rolls Royce Wraith was thus launched, keeping a unique set of individuals in mind: young billionaires who prefer a bit of sportiness along with unadulterated luxury. The Rolls-Royce Wraith delivers on both fronts.
Back then, the company did not disclose any plans of a convertible — Drophead, as R-R calls it — version of the Rolls-Royce Wraith. Now, Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös has confirmed via Autocar that the Wraith Drophead Coupe will see the light of day in a couple of years time. Like the Phantom, the Wraith will get a folding soft top and the company would start taking orders in 2015.
Speaking of the Wraith, Müller-Ötvös felt happy the way things have progressed since the launch of the product in mid-2013. The company has received positive feedback about the Wraith, and it has been able to attract first-time buyers to the exclusive luxury brand.
According to Müller-Ötvös, the sporty character of the Wraith has also attracted previous Ferrari owners, and these are people who know their performance cars. The Wraith delivers on its promise of high performance along with bespoke luxury, and that is the primary reason why the Wraith gets a thumbs up — even from Ferrari owners.

The super-luxury coupe market is heating up rapidly this year with the production debut of the Rolls-Royce Wraith fastback and the brand-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe concept.
Both are aiming for the meat of the market occupied by the Bentley Continental GT: a car so successful and profitable that it almost single-handedly relaunched the $100,000 to $150,000 market for two-door, four-seat dream coupes.
While the Conti GT V-8 S is now far more nimble but just as rapid as before, the styling of the Bentley is looking quite tired and unappealing for the sharpest and most fashion-forward shoppers.
In the ultra-chic world of luxury cars, yachts and homes on three continents - old styling and previous ownership of the Bentley means these buyers are ready to move forward.
New styles are poised to capture these Bentley refugees with the Wraith and S-Class Coupe, which is quite near production specification despite being officially tagged a concept.
These two swish shapes are both absolutely fresh designs that introduce advanced styling concepts for both the RR and Merc brands. If well received, the cues seen here will have a strong influence on the next-generation vehicle designs from these storied luxury marques.
As sedan-based two-door coupes, they both essentially start at the same place as the Bentley did when remodeling the VW Phaeton.

The Bloodhound SSC Project has been around for the past couple of years. It goes without saying that the team behind this project has been determined to break the 1,000 mph barrier.
But for the better part of those years, the project has yet to take off. All that, though, appears to be changing now that Rolls Royce has entered the picture.
The British luxury automaker has signed up to support the Bloodhound Project in the latter’s attempt to break the barrier. As part of its involvement, Rolls-Royce will be supplying a modified of its EJ200 engine for the project, which will then be complemented by a Cosworth F1 engine driving the rocket-oxidizer pump. Together, the powertrain can produce up to 135,000 equivalent horsepower, which as you can see, is ridiculously mental.
Ultimately, the Bloodhoud Project aims to achieve its lofty goal and break the existing 763 mph record set by the Thrust SSC in 1997. And break it convincingly, might we add. The team hopes to begin runway testing sometime in 2014 before it heads off to Kaksken Pan, South Africa to set out on its record-breaking attempt.

Way back in 2008, Pininfarina – a custom coach builder – took a look at the $400K Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Convertible and simply thought it just wasn’t good enough. So Pininfarina took this nearly half-million-dollar machine and created a one-off custom vehicle out of it. The maker then dubbed it the Hyperion, which was taken from an Ancient Greek Titan.
Much like its closest competitor, Bentley, Rolls-Royce has always been one of those car companies that you either loved or hated, mostly due to their gaudy exteriors and even more outlandish pricing. For those that love them, but just need a little something extra, there is no shortage of custom car builders that will customize them to your liking.
Despite the number of custom car builders modifying these ultra-luxury cars, none can touch the uniqueness and flashiness of the Hyperion. Pininfarina took special care to closely integrate a vintage look – taking styling cues from the 1930s and 1940s – with modern technology and feel.
This monster of a luxury car originally debuted at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It then made an appearance at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show before going off to its rightful owner, Roland Hall.
