For all of the press and hype surrounding the Toyota GT 86 and the Subaru BRZ, not a lot of people know or have given love to the third model of the bunch, the Scion FR-S.

All that’s about to change because the Scion FR-S has arrived. For those that have shed rivers of tears when they found out that neither the GT 86 nor the BRZ were headed Stateside, news that the FR-S will arrive in America is tantamount to a post Thanksgiving blessing.

Now, we’ve actually seen a concept version of the FR-S - called the FR-S Concept - at the New York Auto Show, so it really didn’t come as a surprise to a lot of us that the sports coupe was coming to the US, but seeing the concept and seeing the production version are two different things.

It doesn’t even matter that we’re not getting the GT 86 and the BRZ. We have the FR-S, and just like a child that comes to us, we’re going to shower it with as much love as we can possibly give.

Updated 05/15/2015: Scion today announced prices and updates for the 2015 FR-S sports car set to go on sale just in time for summer. Updates for the 2015 model year include: a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning of the rear shock absorbers, larger exhaust tips and for the interior an updated panel with a carbon fiber look. The model will also get auto on/off headlights. Prices for the 2015 FR-S will start from $24,900 for the six-speed manual version and $26,000 for the six-speed automatic one.

Toyota Files Patent For High-Performance FR-S

Recent patent filings submitted by Toyota in Japan could eventually lead to our wishes finally coming true. The patent, as the images clearly show, looks a lot like the Subaru STI Performance Concept that was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2015. Subaru was coy on its future plans for the concept, but now it looks like the future is arriving sooner than we expected.

According to Auto Guide, both Toyota and Subaru are involved in the patent application.

Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru, is also credited for the design of the patent. To add even more fuel to what is already a healthy fire, the revelation of the patent comes a few days after Subaru boss Yasuyuki Yoshinaga hinted that a high-performance BRZ variant could be released ahead of the arrival of the second-generation model.

Toyota has been quiet on this front other than the submission of the patent, but since the two companies are working in concert in the development of the sports car troika - the Toyota GT86 and the Scion FR-S make up the other legs of the tripod - it’s possible that we might get an announcement from them in the near future.

Until then, let’s hug these images tight and wish on a star that there’s a lot more to this patent application that what meets the eye. We’ve waited since 2012 to see more powerful variants of the BRZ, FR-S, and GT86. It’s already 2015 and we’re still waiting. Let’s hope that our wishes will be answered soon.

2016 Scion FR-S Release Series 2.0

With a revised version of the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S rumored to arrive in 2016, the Japanese coupe might finally get the more powerful drivetrain it deserves. Meanwhile, Scion has released yet another "all show and no go" version of the FR-S that gets all sorts of goodies and gadgets but the same 200-horsepower engine.

Meet the FR-S Release Series 2.0, described as "the most stylish version of the sports car ever offered."

If the name sounds familiar is because Scion has already launched a Release Series version of the FR-S. It made its official debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show with a mild aerodynamic kit, a TRD quad exhaust system, a lowered suspension, HID headlamps, and black seats with a "T" pattern. Only 1,500 units were built.

The Release Series 2.0 is pretty much the same thing, sans the TRD exhaust but with a more luxurious cabin. "The FR-S is well known for being a fabulous sports car, and now we’re taking it up a notch in the luxury arena,” said Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland. “It’s the perfect car to take from the race track during the day to the red carpet that evening.”

2015 Scion FR-S - Driven

The 2013-2015 Scion FR-S is exactly the sort of car gearheads crave. It’s a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2+2 coupe with a manual transmission and an affordable price tag. Really, there’s nothing not to love with that combination. In 2012, when the FR-S and its corporate cousin, the Subaru BRZ came to market, we were overjoyed.

Many initial opinions of the cars suggested the 200-horsepower four-cylinder was underpowered, though with only 2,758 pounds to move and 13.79 pounds for each horsepower, its weight to power ratio bests the 2014-2015 Ford Fiesta ST and 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec, at 13.8 and 13.93 pounds per horsepower, respectively. You hardly hear folks complain about those two being underpowered. Heck, it even bests the 2013-2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s 14.85 weight to power ratio. Sure, there are other variables to how powerful a car feels, like drive ratios and transmission gearing, but these stats still speak volumes.

Arguments aside, the FR-S has the spec sheet of a purpose-built sports car. Its engine is just a few millimeters forward of being a front mid-ship design and its weight distribution is only three percent from perfectly balanced. Heavily bolstered seats, good visibility, a manual transmission and parking brake, and an appetite for revs from its 2.0-liter flat-four gives the FR-S plenty of credibility.

To put its creds to the test, I spent a week with a 2015 FR-S fitted with three pedals. This isn’t my first time in an FR-S, but my last tester came with the kill-joy automatic. Thankfully my suspicions about the manual transmission curing all my reservations with the automatic FR-S were true. This car was made to row your own.

Scion FR-S Will Race Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Scion will once again return to the Colorado mountains to make a run up to 14,110 feet in this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, marking the fifth consecutive year the brand has sought to tackle the intimidating event. 

The effort is a collaboration between SoCal-based speed shop and aftermarket-parts provider Evasive Motorsports, Japanese tuner GReddy Performance, and North American wheel-importer Mackin Industries, all of which will support a specially modified FR-S coupe race car in its bid to conquer the winding summit road. Other major sponsors include Scion Racing, Toyo Tires, Turn14 Distribution, Garrett and Sparco.

Piloting the lightweight two-door will be American time attack-driver Robert Walker, who will make his third attempt at the Peak this year. Walker’s previous runs include time behind the wheel of the 2013 Scion FR-S Evasive Motorsports Time Attack car, which debuted at the 2012 SEMA show and has seen competition in national and international time-attack events (you can check out HD in-car footage of last year’s run in the above video, which shows Walker’s 10-minute, 37.791-second blast up the hill in the Evasive Motorsports FR-S, a 22-second improvement over 2013).

Walker says that knowledge of the course gained from past runs is critical to success at Pikes Peak, given the dearth of practice available prior to the actual event: “We only drive the road at speed in its entirety once each year – on race day,” Walker said. “That can be intimidating to any driver. I’m counting on the experience the team and I have gained to give me a heads-up in the competition.”

Scion says its goal is to improve upon last year’s results, when superstar drift-fiend Ken Gushi took an FR-S to a third best-in-class finish.

Toyota Trademarks "S-FR" Name

On May 28, Toyota filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the name “Toyota S-FR” as a “standard character mark.” The trademark covers “automobiles and structural parts thereof,” and while only Toyota really knows the true intentions of this trademark, that isn’t stopping any speculation that this could be the name of the planned successor to the Toyota Supra.

That being said, it seems highly unlikely that Toyota would want to introduce a new model with a name so similar to an existing model: the Scion FR-S. Not only would the two models be in different brands in the same showrooms, but they could very well be targeting similar buyers looking for sporty coupes.

One likely alternative could simply be that this trademarked name is an insurance policy to ensure that another company doesn’t try to cash in on the FR-S name. Looking at Toyota’s recent trademark history, it has also filed similar applications for the names “Toyota FT” and “Toyota FV,” but these names have since been abandoned.

Even if Toyota isn’t planning to apply the Supra name to its upcoming (possibly planned for a 2017 debut) rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, I could only hope that the automaker could come up with something a little more original for this high-performance halo car.

Revised Scion FR-S Will Bring More Power

Toyota is gearing up to give the Scion FR-S a mid-cycle refresh next year, and rumors have it the car will come with brand new styling updates, improved suspension components, and, much to the chagrin of enthusiasts everywhere, a ridiculously modest power increase.

Citing an unidentified company insider, Aussie publication Motoring says the 2.0-liter flat-four powerplant will receive just minor mechanical improvements: "Engineers have focused on friction reduction engineering and a more efficient intake manifold design that will boost power and torque by around five percent, while improving fuel efficiency by up to seven percent," the source is quoted.

That means the Subaru-derived boxer engine will get nudged up to 210 horsepower from its original 200 horsepower. Not much, but certainly a step in the right direction. I guess.

Aesthetically, the car’s exterior will get a new front end consisting of a restyled hood, headlights, bumper and enlarged lower grille. In the back will be a new bumper, diffuser, and twin exhaust outlets that are moved further toward the corners of the car. 

And while few have complained about the FR-S’ handling capabilities, Motoring’s insider says the new car will come with “extensive chassis tuning feedback” from GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by Meister of Nurburgring), Toyota’s motorsports partner and in-house go-faster division. New Sachs dampers are expected to make the list of standard equipment, improving ride quality while maintaining the car’s highly praised cornering balance. The rear suspension subframe will also get reinforced for a stiffer tail.

Toyota Engineers Will Race One Lap of America Endurance

The Scion FR-S wouldn’t be your first pick for most types of endurance racing. It could never match the speed of the other cars at Le Mans, and neither could it handle the terrain of Dakar or the Baja 1000. But the One Lap Of America event, which has much more to do with driver skill than who has the fastest car, is actually a pretty good fit for the car. So Toyota is sending engineers Anthony Magagnoli and Stephen Byington with a specially prepared FR-S to this year’s event.

The One Lap of America is the slightly more sane and significantly more legal version of the Cannonball Run (the real one, not the movie) coast-to-coast race of the early ’70s. That race was started by Car and Driver’s Brock Yates, and it is Brock Yates Jr. who runs the One Lap. The event is held in rally-like stages, with penalties for being either over or under time. Additional events are held at race tracks along the way and the cars end up covering more than 4,000 miles in seven days. It might not have the speed of Le Mans, but it does allow us to see what more mainstream sports cars can handle.

Jay Leno Reviews Speedhunters Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S: Video

Back in November, I covered each of the competitors in the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge, which is an annual build-off between three automotive media outlets to create the “ultimate Scion” in the 90-day run-up to SEMA. Each participant was allowed a $15,000 budget and free reign in terms of modifications. Taking the win was this old-school throwback from Speedhunters, which beat out both Super Street and GT Channel for the $10,000 grand prize. The “86” racer recently made an appearance on Jay Leno’s Garage, giving us a close-up look at just how much work went into its creation, not to mention a quick blast around LA with Leno at the helm.

The video begins with some of the technical bits that make this Scion so special, including the wide-body kit and custom wheels. Speedhunters also decided to pay homage to the IMSA era of U.S. GT racing, with a white, red, orange and yellow livery. The “86” you see plastered all over the body panels alludes to the car’s forerunners, including the legendary Toyota AE86 Hachi-Roku sport compact.

The FR-S’sublime handling characteristics are beefed up with stiff RS*R Black-i coilovers, plus a few extra complementary components to give it that true race car feeling in the bends. But the best bit lies under the louvered hood, where Speedhunters installed a Cosworth supercharger kit that pushes the powerplant to produce roughly 300 horsepower at the wheels.

In true car-guy fashion, Leno has his fun on the freeway and through the canyons, praising the car’s extra power. At the very least, you gotta hit play to hear that tuned flat-four sing.

Extreme Drifting in a 600-Horsepower Scion FR-S: Video

Ah, the holidays. The perfect time to sit around the fire with family, roasting chestnuts and relaxing with a soothing cup of spiced eggnog. Well, either that, or roasting the tires off an FR-S with a super gulp serving of counter-steer.

That latter scenario was the retreat of choice for professional driver Ryan Tuerck as he slid his way up some 2,000 feet of switchbacks and blind corners in his 600-horsepower Scion FR-S. That hazy scenery behind the clouds of smoke is Burke Mountain in Vermont, which makes for some rather epic public-road drifting action. Adding to the fun, we find fellow Formula D driver Pat Goodin coming out in a black 1JZ-powered Nissan S13 for tandem madness.

Long story short, that white car isn’t stock. In this walk-around video, Tuerck lets us peek under the skin of this hyperspace FR-S. Motive power is provided by a turbocharged, Toyota 2JZGTE inline-six with cam gears and a stroker kit from Brian Crower. Making boost is a Garrett GTX3582R turbocharger, with two 44-mm (1.73-inch) wastegates. Two Radium Engineering catch cans condense blow-by vapors, while the tuner’s fuel regulator helps with the dino juice. Finally, Mishimoto cools with a thick radiator help in the corners. Dominant Engineering is responsible for all the fabrication work; check out the custom side exhaust dump peeking out of the passenger side fender.

The interior is gutted, while an ASD handbrake is in place for instant rear lock up. Recaro seats were installed to hold Tuerck in place. DBA Racing brake rotors, a Wisefab rear suspension kit, and BC Racing coilovers help round out the stop and turn. A Wisefab kit in the front helps eek out every last degree of steering angle.

When Toyota and Subaru announced their plans to join forces and create a small, affordable rear-wheel drive coupe, the world rejoiced. With Toyota’s legendary quality and reliability coupled to Subaru’s knowledge of fun and exciting rally machines, this car had the potential to be one of the best enthusiast machines in years. The car that was created wears the badge FR-S for Scion and BRZ for Subaru. A while back our very own Mark McNabb was granted the keys to a Scion FR-S, but he was saddled with the automatic transmission. To get the most of a machine like the FR-S you need the ability to row your own.

When I got the call that a FR-S was going to be heading to my driveway with a proper three-pedal transmission, I was excited to see how different it was to drive compared to the automatic version that Mark had. I slide into the driver’s seat, slotted the slick manual into first gear and set off on a week of fun and mayhem with tiny sports car.

You Can Forget About a Turbo or Convertible Scion FR-S

You don’t need to tell us, because we already know: the 2013 to 2015 Scion FR-S is awesome. It’s an affordable sports car in the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a low curb weight and suspension setup that’s perfect for sideways high jinks. What’s not to love? Well, if the reviews are any indication, the slightly anemic four-banger under the hood can put a damper on things. And when it comes to sports cars, a roofless version, if done properly, can be a huge fun-factor multiplier.

So when rumors began to swirl that Toyota was interested in creating turbocharged and cabrio versions of the GT 86 platform, fans everywhere rejoiced. Unfortunately, that celebration appears to have been a bit premature. According to WardsAuto, Scion execs have confirmed the death of the FR-S turbo and convertible.

In an interview at the LA Auto Show last week, Scion’s senior vice president Doug Murtha seems downtrodden as the bearer of bad news: “I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further.’ Nobody was more disappointed than we were.”

We’re not so sure about that last part, but oh well. While a factory turbo FR-S appears DOA, there’s still copious support from the aftermarket for anyone willing to start down the long, winding path of vehicle modification. As for a roofless FR-S, all we can say is that with enough time and money, anything is possible.

2015 Scion FR-S Speedhunters Maximum Attack

The rear-drive, two-door FR-S certainly has the right bones for making it big as an all-out race car. With a low curb weight and a highly tunable four-cylinder under the hood, the potential for a podium finish is there. However, with something so new, development time is required to make the transition from untested to competitive. It’s only after grinding through tons of mistakes that a real track champion is born.

One team that certainly paid its dues was All American Racers, headed by racing legend Dan Gurney. Back in the 80s, AAR entered a trio of Toyota Celicas in the highly popular International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTU class to take on the dominant Mazda RX-7. Although the team enjoyed limited success, hard work and relentless development yielded a competitive set of cars by the end of the season. When AAR and the Toyotas moved up to the GTO class, they started to win races.

As a throwback to the IMSA era of GT racing in the U.S., Speedhunters created this FR-S track special for the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge. The challenge is between three media outlets to create the ultimate FR-S in the 90-day lead-in to SEMA. With a budget of $15,000, each competitor is allowed free reign to build a car to wow the judges.

This year, Speedhunters managed to take home the win (along with a $10,000 check). The judges liked the retro theme and custom fabrication personally wrought by technical editor Keith Charnovia, as well as all the cleanly executed performance upgrades. Congratulations, Speedhunters!

2015 Scion FR-S Super Street

In stock trim, the Scion FR-S is simply fantastic. It’s light, agile, and practically begging to be flogged. However, there’s always room for improvement; at least that’s how the folks at Super Street see it. The performance magazine is known for utterly transforming any car its folks lay their hands on, and have extensive experience rendering modifications that produce both substantial performance improvements and show-stopping looks.

The FR-S you see here is no different. It’s Super Street’s entry for the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge; a 90-day race between three media outfits to complete the baddest FR-S before an official reveal at SEMA. In an online poll, Super Street managed to beat out both GT Channel and Speedhunters by a convincing margin. The real question is- what will the judges think?

With one recent FR-S build already under its belt, Super Street has the history to back it. IT also knows what it takes to make a car stand out in a field of top contenders. The strategy employed here is clear: “wider, wilder, and louder.” With a $15,000 budget and enough yellow paint to cover a fleet of school buses, can it take home the win?

2015 Scion FR-S By GT Channel

Few vehicles represent a love for driving better than a small, rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe. There’s no space for cargo or excess passengers and no compromise in the layout; it’s all about maximizing the interface between the driver and the road, quickening your pulse, and plastering a big banana grin all over your face. There are precious few cars that meet all these criteria, but the Scion FR-S is undoubtedly one of them.

Launched in 2012, the FR-S, and its corporate twin the Subaru BRZ, quickly became the darlings of automotive journalists everywhere. The car is extremely tossable, with a suspension setup that almost encourages sideways hooning, while the naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder provides adequate power for canyon carving.

To help celebrate the supreme awesomeness of this lead-foot daydream, Scion has dared GT Channel, SuperStreet, and Speedhunters to deliver their idea of the ultimate FR-S. Dubbed the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge, each publication was given a new FR-S, a $15,000 budget, and 90 days to complete their creation before the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

With only a few days left until the big event, you can be sure that crunch time is officially on.

GT Channel partnered with MotoIQ and legendary Japanese tuning house Mine’s to produce this FR-S under the guiding principle of “smart, sophisticated and stupid fast.” As a tuner car, the team wanted to build something that was functional and not simply a show queen. It’s a build designed to trounce competitors on the track, but still maintain some degree of civility on the street.

2015 Scion FR-S T1

Scion is definitely swinging for the fences with its SEMA offerings. Don’t believe me? Check out this targa-top FR-S and tell me that isn’t a fresh take on the company’s sports coupe. The model is called the FR-S T1 and it was built by Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs. Give some applause to Lookofsky for going against the grain with this targo-top FR-S.

Now I’ve seen some convertible FR-S models here and there, but a targa roof? That’s new to me.

The roof is the unquestioned eye-catcher of this custom-built FR-S, but Lookofsky didn’t stop there. He also gave the FR-S T1 a wide-body kit, slapped on a set of wheels, and added in some performance upgrades.

For my money, you’re not going to see a Scion FR-S that looks as cool as this one. Scion and Jeremy Lookofsky swung hard on this project and nailed it out of the park.

Rumormill: Toyota GT86 to get Turbocharged and AWD Versions

Ok, grab your biggest salt shaker before you venture further into this news; you’re going to need it. The Website 4WheelNews.com is quoting an article published recently in a Japanese car magazine that is apparently called Best Car, and it seems Toyota is working on a version of the GT86 that is turbocharged and has all-wheel drive. Yes, this rumor is sprouting legs yet again.

According to the story, the turbo engine will be a 2.5-liter boxer from Subaru with 300 horsepower. Right now the only engine Subaru makes that is a turbo 2.5 is the old EJ in the WRX STI. This is where I start to take some issue. First, Subaru has stated in the past that the engine in the STI is too tall to fit under the hood of the BRZ and GT86. Secondly, Subaru has been insanely strict about weight and center of balance on this car. Using the heavier EJ25 block instead of the new 2.0-liter FA20 engine that is in the current WRX, seems like an obvious wrong choice. I also question the idea of adding AWD to the mix. Getting rid of the RWD setup will alter this car’s driving dynamic to a point that it will be unrecognizable.

Another odd piece of information in this piece is in regards to the transmission. Apparently, Toyota will offer an eight-speed auto with paddle shifters. Nothing in the Toyota or Subaru family has an eight-speed transmission, so I am suspect about this as well.

Well that was a wild and exciting Podcast. As always, we want to send a super special thanks to everyone who tuned in live, and to everyone who gave us questions to answer. If you didn’t happen to catch the live show, let me inform you of what you have waiting for you after you click that play button.

We start the show off in the usual manner with the Weekly Wheels segment where Mark talks about how good the Scion FR-S is, even though it had an automatic transmission. I then proceed to tell him he is incorrect, and then we move on to talking about my time with the long wheelbase Range Rover. Spoiler: it’s like driving a house made of $100 bills.

We had a pretty busy news week and so there was a lot to cover. We move from the Range Rover straight into Mark’s choice for the five best off-road machines, talk about a worthless BMW that someone tried to sell for $18k and we even talk about the new pointless Mercedes SUV… sort of.

In other car news, we cover the shiny new Volvo XC90, the upcoming Focus RS rumors and the potential for a Ford Mustang with a 10-speed transmission. You know, like a mountain bike.

We finish the show with a fairly lengthy Q&A followed by our signature Own, Drive, Burn. For the viewer questions we discuss when the new NSX might finally arrive, what our current dream long term test car may be, the potential future of the Mazdaspeed3 and whether it is a good idea to buy a nice used car or a cheaper new one. For Own, Drive, Burn we decide between three legendary classic Hot Hatches.

The show did run a little long, but since it was the six month anniversary of our first podcast, we figured you guys wouldn’t care too much.

A quick parting note to all our US viewers. This is a crazy holiday weekend, and traditionally there are lots of incidents involving motorized things and the use of alcohol. We want you back next week, so don’t do anything stupid like drink and drive.

2014 Scion FR-S - Driven

The Scion FR-S and its corporate cousins the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 are still relatively new to the sports car scene, having been launched in 2012. The cars represent an interesting alliance between Subaru and Toyota, two Japanese automakers, with Toyota taking care of the design work and Subaru handling the greasy bits underneath.

Though the cars have been well received by journalist and enthusiast the world over, it seems sales, at least in the U.S., arn’t living up to the hype with just over 40,000 FR-S units moved since 2012 and roughly 18,000 BRZs sold. That’s an oddity considering just how well the cars fulfill the sport car checklist.

I recently spent a week behind the wheel of a Scion FR-S getting to know its personality. My tester came equipped with nothing more than optional six-speed automatic transmission. No navigation or SiriusXM; just an honest sports coupe with a willing powerplant and skinny tires that made driving anywhere an exciting event.

Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S Earns IIHS 2014 Top Safety Pick

The IIHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety) has just recently awarded the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S its coveted “Top Safety Pick" designation. It scored a “good” in the front moderate overlap, side impact, rear impact and roof crush, and an "Acceptable" in the small overlap test. The real surprise there is the small overlap, as that’s a very difficult crash to survive. This makes the BRZ the seventh Subaru model to earn the Top Safety Pick award and Scion’s second. This isn’t that surprising though; Subaru has always been a symbol of safety.

Also rear-wheel drive makes it easier to implement good impact and crumple zones in the front, due to the lack of drivetrain equipment up there. This is very good news, as the BRZ and FR-S are two of just a few true, rear-wheel drive sports cars out there and they are arguably the best ones at their price point. With their accurate steering and nimble chassis, the BRZ and FR-S are tail happy hooligans at any speed. Add the Top Safety Pick on top of that and you’ve got an excellent little car.

2014 Scion FR-S GReddy Racing Pikes Peak Hill Climb

The 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is set to take place Sunday, June 29th. We all know what that means. Some of the nuttiest performance-tuned sports cars will be making an appearance at the event, all with the goal of being the fastest to race up the treacherous 156-turn race course.

The Scion FR-S is one of those sports cars. Actually, it’s the second year in a row that the FR-S will compete at Pikes Peak, specifically in the event’s Time Attack 1 Division for production-based two- and four-wheel drive vehicles. This year, GReddy Racing is back with its Pikes Peak-tuned FR-S and it will have veteran racer Ken Gushi sitting behind the wheel of the race car. Gushi is no stranger to the twists and turns of Pikes Peak, having won the Exhibition Auto Class at last year’s event with the Lexus ISF CCS-R.

This year, Gushi takes his turn in a wonderfully dressed Scion FR-S that has been retuned to produce a staggering 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. That’s the kind of upgrade we wish a production FR-S could have, but that’s a different issue altogether. For now we have to live with its standard 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

What’s important is how this GReddy-tuned FR-S fares at Pikes Peak this weekend. With 500 ponies on tap, we expect nothing less than a blistering time up the mountain.

Subaru BRZ Could be Discontinued After This Generation

Since the Toyobaru triplets — BRZ, FR-S, and GT86 — debuted for the 2013 model year, the relationship between Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries, the company that owns Subaru and that Toyota owns a minority share of, has been stressed. Toyota seems ready to move the GT86 forward to a new level of the sport car realm, while Subaru has essentially sat back and said "we build it, so you can’t make any changes unless we allow it." Now a new report from Drive claims that Toyota may take its ball and go home, leaving Suby with no choice but to discontinue the BRZ.

This report stems from a conversation with Toyota chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, who said that the next-generation 86 could be the brainchild of the BMW-Toyota team up that is already under way. This would not only lead to the almost certain demise of the BRZ, but it would also result in a far more extreme GT86 and FR-S — if the latter is part of the 86 program in the next generation.

2015 Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86 By Cosworth

There’s a storm brewing over at Cosworth, the kind that can redefine the way we look at the Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86. The aftermarket company known for its engine forays in the world of Formula One prepared a new power package treatment for the FA-20 engine that powers all three.

After some teasing in early 2014, Cosworth has finally bared the details on this new power package and it has come at a perfect time for the trio of sports cars. It’s a performance upgrade that has turned the normally tame 200-horsepower sports cars into a fire-breathing bullets that are poised to dominate the automotive scene.

Finally, we can alleviate some of our issues with the BRZ/FR-S/GT86 trio with a healthy injection of power, courtesy of Cosworth. Now, if only we can get the automakers to finally add some of this power straight from the factory, instead of slapping on silly body kits and flashy wheels.

Cosworth’s program comes in three stages, with the details on Stage 1 being the only ones that are available as of June 2, 2014.

2017 Scion FR-S Sedan

With Toyota still mum on details, the much rumored Scion FR-S Sedan is still a mystery, but with plenty of speculation floating around it. The only thing we’re sure of is that the FR-S platform has been designed to support a sedan body style, as Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed last year.

Up until now it was believed that the four-door would be powered by the same 2.0-liter boxer engine - good for 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, found in the coupe. Today, however, a report from Motor Trend quoted inside sources claiming the sedan will actually be sold with two different powertrains.

One of them will be a Subaru-sourced turbocharged, 2.0-liter unit found in the current-generation Legacy that’s tuned to deliver at least 300 horsepower and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second model will reportedly gain a hybrid drivetrain, but actual details are unknown except for the fact that Toyota is working on a system "that’s compatible to Subaru’s boxer engine."

The conventional FR-S Sedan is expected to hit showrooms by mid-2016 with the hybrid variant featuring all-wheel-drive to arrive several months later. Compared to the FR-S coupe, the sedan will be 20 inches longer and 4 inches taller for improved interior room.

Best and Worst of the 2014 New York International Auto Show

Okay, folks, the 2014 New York International Auto Show is in the books, and we saw more debuts than we could even keep up with. We saw all of the big boys come with at least one key addition to their lineups, but we also had a few misses. For example. we were hoping to see the Hellcat option for the Challenger and Charger, and some extra information on the next-gen Miata — not just a glimpse at its chassis — neither of which happened.

As with every year, we are set to bring you the best and worst of the NYIAS, but we’re changing things up a bit. This year, each of our esteemed staffers has chosen their favorite and least favorite of the show and let you know why they loved or hated each one — some of us even had complete opposite opinions. Included in the list below is the Dart-ized Charger, the even-more-retro Challenger, a concept from Land Rover and even a "dirt cheap" Aston Martin.

There were a lot of vehicles to choose from, and we may have missed one that you loved or hated. Let us know in the comments below what car you loved or hated the most from the 2014 NYIAS.

Why oh why must Toyota and Scion continuously tease us with fast-looking versions of the GT 86 and FR-S, but never actually release one with any go-fast bits on it? Well, here is yet another example of all show and no go from Toyota, as Scion has unveiled its FR-S Release Series 1.0 in New York, and revealed even more that it couldn’t care less what the masses are asking for.

The only good thing to come from this new version is that it will be limited to just 1,500 units and feature a few useful gadgets among the useless, rice-boy add-on equipment. We’ll start with the good stuff, which includes push-button start, black seats with a "T" pattern, HID headlights and automatic dual climate control. Those are all nice additions, but Toyota went ahead and riced this bad-boy out with its TRD Quad Tip Exhaust System, lowering springs, aero kit with a rear spoiler and fender garnishes.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all not calling the FR-S Release Series 1.0 ugly by any means, but I take issue with slapping all of that extra weight onto the FR-S and making it look the part of a racer without bumping the actual performance. Sure, the lowering springs may make it more agile — doubtful — but the engine remains the same 200-horsepower, 151-pound-feet unit it’s always had. The only hope that we have is that the TRD exhaust system actually frees up a few ponies, but there is no mention of that.

According to Scion, the FR-S Release Series 1.0 will cost "under $30,000" plus handling and destination charges.

Guess we’ll continue to wait for a performance version of the GT 86/FR-S/BRZ triplets...

Toyota Looking Into Convertible GT86 and Scion FR-S Without Subaru’s Help

In October 2013, Toyota announced that the convertible version for the GT86 and the Scion FR-S was put on indefinite hold, because apparently such a car has no place in Toyota’s plans in the near future. This decision was pretty surprising to us, considering that Toyota unveiled the FT86 Open Top Conceptat the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, which made us believe that a convertible GT86/FR-S was just around the corner.

Now, we have new rumors suggesting that Toyota wants the GT86 and FR-S Convertible, but Subaru still has no interest in producing it. As a result, Toyota is now investigating the possibility of developing this car on its own, despite Subaru saying before that Toyota could not do so without its help.

Talking about this issue at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Doug Murtha, vice president for Scion in the U.S., said: "It’s something we’re looking at internally from both a manufacturing standpoint — where do we build something that’s relatively low-volume, if not at Subaru — and from an engineering standpoint: Where are those resources going to come from to do it?"

With this in mind Toyota asked all of its dealers and Scion dealers around the world to submit volume targets for such a model. If interest has increased, Toyota could start looking into the possibility of manufacturing open-top GT86 and FR-S models. However, it will be very difficult to do so, considering that currently the GT86, FR-S and the BRZ bodies are all developed at Subaru’s plant in Ohta, Japan, and retrofitting a convertible top onto a coupe in any bulk may prove too time-consuming to be profitable for Toyota.

2014 Scion FR-S Monogram Series

Scion wanted to inject more luxury into its models, so at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, it will arrive with a new Monogram Series for a few vehicles, including the FR-S. This new upgrade adds Alcantara and navigation to Scion’s popular sports car, among many other new features.

The new FR-S Monogram Series will hit the market in February at $27,400 for the six-speed manual version and $28,500 for the six-speed sequential automatic version. Scion is also offering an optional premium Whiteout color priced at an additional $395. Only 2,000 FR-S Monogram Series units will be produced this year.

On the exterior, the new FR-S Monogram Series will look basically identical to a standard FR-S, except for its color-keyed rear spoiler and standard HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights. Most of the updates included in this new package are on the inside, and they represent a retail value of over $1,900.

Subaru Boss Shoots Down Drop-Top FR-S, BRZ Idea

The Tokyo Motor Show has been full of excitement and interesting new designs, but one bit of bad news has surfaced: Subaru’s brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga dismissed the idea of a convertible Subaru BRZ.

[Automotive News] has reported that Yoshinaga wasn’t too fond of Toyota’s drop-top concept displayed at Tokyo, saying his engineers believe the chassis would require a complete redesign in order to safely create a convertible BRZ.

Unfortunately, the lack of Yoshinaga’s blessing spells doom for Toyota’s attempts at building the car even without Subaru. Yoshinaga is also president of Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company that owns Subaru and manufacturer of both the BRZ and FR-S. “We make the car, so if we don’t make it, it can’t happen,” says Yoshinaga.

With that sort of nail in the coffin, it seems unlikely a convertible FR-S or BRZ will ever appear – at least in the car’s current generation. Perhaps when the car’s second generation rolls out, Fuji Heavy Industries will have accounted for the heavy interest in the roadster. Yoshinaga himself knows the market is ripe for the car, "I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car," he said. "But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. There are big technical difficulties."

Perhaps a bigger issue of concern is the apparent inter-company quarreling happening over the convertible idea. Toyota, the company responsible for the overall design of the BRZ/FR-S cars, seems adamant about the idea and has toted several convertible FR-S concepts around to other car show around the world, while the President of the manufacturing company and brand chief of Subaru, responsible for the powertrain and underpinnings of the cars, is dead set against it. Such an open and publicly played out situation cannot be good for future product development.

Lets just keep our fingers crossed that Toyota’s desire for a chopped-top FR-S doesn’t put the entire FT-86 project on the chopping block.

2013 Scion FR-S Concept One by Bulletproof Automotive

It looks like the Scion FR-S will be one of the major stars at this year’s SEMA Show. Scion prepared no less than four concept cars based on the FR-S, and we are pretty sure we will see more than these in Las Vegas.

One of the four concepts was designed in cooperation with Bulletproof Automotive and transforms the obedient FR-S into a 500-horsepower beast with an exterior paint conversion inspired by Lamborghini.

A base FR-S delivers only 200 horsepower, so you can imagine that taking it up to 500 horsepower required lots of work. To achieve this massive number, Bulletproof installed a new, Powerhouse Amuse turbo kit with a EFR 6758 turbocharger, new titanium turbo downpipe and front pipe, 86.5 mm overbore pistons, upgraded rods and ACL bearings. There is also a new Amuse Titan Extra STTI exhaust system. The concept can run on both 91 octane and E85 fuels.

2013 Scion FR-S Steve Aoki Art Car

The Scion FR-S holds a special place in our hearts as part of a trinity of sports cars that have taken the world by storm.

In probably one of the most understated statements of the year, we’re not the only ones who love the FR-S. Apparently, world renowned DJ and producer Steve Aoki is himself quite a fan of the FR-S, so much so that a specially-modded version of the Japanese sports car is coming to the 2013 SEMA Auto Show packed with a host of features that can only come from the genius mind of Aoki.

The car itself is called the FR-S Steve Aoki Art Car, although what kind of interpretation you have for ’art’ is valid for interpretation. In this case, Aoki went balls to the wall on the interior, dressing up the FR-S’ cabin with a steady mix of high-grade audio components that essentially turns the FR-S’ interior into a veritable — and portable — club.

A host of sound system products from Pioneer were installed with multiple component speaker packages. Custom components from MV Designz were also designed and fabricated to use with all that explosion of audio technica. And just to keep the club vibe going, the FR-S’ interior somehow also found room for strobe lighting, a deck lid-mounted LCD display and a fog machine.

By the way, don’t sleep on the FR-S’ exterior package, because the combination of that five-piece aerodynamic kit and the custom graphics (the blue and orange trims on the black body look absolutely stunning) makes for a really attractive piece of eye candy.

2013 Scion FR-S Style J/Urban GT Sport Coupe

Is it possible that the positively incredible-looking Scion FR-S could look even better when given proper aesthetic and aerodynamic enhancements?

Somehow, Scion was able to accomplish that with the FR-S Urban GT Sport Concept. Set to make its debut at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show, the FR-S Urban GT Sport Concept, or as its known in shorthand, "Style J", takes the reigns of the standard FR-S and turns it into a more menacing and downright scary sports car.

Scion describes the project as a "futuristic urban design" of the FR-S that not only incorporates a more luxurious feel to it, but also comes with a rash of technological upgrades that would fit right in with its rather furious looks.

The modifications left the FR-S with a host of new components, including a revised front profile that features a new grille configuration, new front bumpers, new fenders, and most noticeable of all, a sharper-looking headlight configuration.

The rear end also received a more polished look, with the rear bumpers designed more ergonomically than the standard FR-S. The rear diffuser also appears to be bigger with the wheel arches extended a little further to create a more staunch look for the FR-S.

The reworked FR-S also gets the benefit of having a set of 19-inch wheels in its portfolio, courtesy of HRE Performance. The suspension was likewise taken care of by Bilstein, while the ADVICS took on the brakes, installing its Big Brake System to complement all the suspension and wheels upgrades.

Judging from the specs that Scion unveiled, it appears that the Urban GT Sport Coupe received a subtle performance upgrade with output now reaching 216 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, a slight increase from the 200-horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque figures from the standard R-S.

We’ve seen GReddy Racing do some pretty gnarly things on the Scion FR-S, and just when it seemed that we’d had enough of them, the aftermarket company is coming to the 2013 SEMA Auto Show with another heavily-modded FR-S.

This time, the official billing of this model is the FR-S Racing Drift and just like GReddy’s previous FR-S projects, this one comes with a ton of upgrades, highlighted by a GReddy turbocharged 2JZ-GTE engine. With that engine firmly installed on the FR-S, the Japanese sports coupe now boasts of a staggering output of 750 horsepower and 730 pound-feet of torque, a ridiculous number considering that the standard FR-S only has 200 ponies and 151 pound-feet of torque on tap.

But that’s how GReddy Racing rolls and if the massive performance upgrade isn’t enough to tickle your fancy, the program also has a Rocket Bunny Ver.2 aerodynamic kit to go with a new set of 19-inch Rays Gram Lights 57FXX wheels, Wilwood brakes, and a KW Competition three-way suspension setup with SPL Parts Arms.

The interior didn’t receive a whole lot of upgrades, at least unless you condor FIA racing seats and a Takata Racing Race 6 SFI harness as a "lot".

Here’s something you probably didn’t know: this Greddy Racing-prepared Scion FR-S that will suit up at the 2013 Formula Drift Pro Championships has been under Scion’s development covers since before the production FR-S was unveiled to the public.

That’s a pretty interesting history for a racecar that certainly has the racing pedigree down to a hilt. It comes with a GReddy X Rocket Bunny body kit, a KW Competition three-way suspension setup and a set of 17- and 18-inch Rays Gram Lights 57DR wheels wrapped in Hankook RS-3 tires.

To prepare it for the intense competition of the Formula Drift Pro Championship, GReddy Racing prepared this FR-S to be a bona fide world beater. It features a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that’s been outfitted with a GReddy turbocharger, thus increasing the output to a staggering 650 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, which is an increase of 450 horsepower and 399 pound-feet of torque over a stock FR-S. This GReddy-tuned engine mates to a G-Force GSR four-speed transmission and the complete package is enough to rocket this FR-S to 60 mph in just 2.83 seconds and through a quarter-mile in just 10.4 seconds.

With an entire year of testing and development under the hood of this FR-S, there’s no doubt that GReddy Racing and driver Ken Gushi are parepared to take the Formula Drift Pro Championship by storm.

2013 Scion FR-S by TAngelo Racing

Lucas Oil KSR prepared an FR-S for the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge, but the guys over TAngelo Racing decided the sports coupe is good enough for the Formula Drift series. Moreover, the model they updated is not an ordinary FR-S, but one salvaged from the Superstorm Sandy.

This particular FR-S was torn apart, gutted and built back up with a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE Toyota engine - the same found in a 2012 Toyota Corolla XRS - that Papadakis Racing strapped a Garrett turbocharger to and tuned to racing specs.

Straight out of the Corolla, this engine puts down just 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and The FR-S’ base boxer-four engine develops a total of 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Neither figure was good enough for TAngelo Racing, as tuned 2AZ engine peaks at an incredible 750 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque.

The standard six-speed manual could never handle this power, so TAngelo Racing replaced it with a new G-Force GSR unit. With the extra power and new gearbox in tow, the FR-S hits 60 mph in just 3 seconds and the clears the 1/4-mile in just 10 seconds.

Along with the new engine, the FR-S by TAngelo Racing also received a GReddy X Rocket Bunny body kit for a little extra style. Additionally, TAngelo Racing added in a set of Rays Gram Lights 57D wheels wrapped in Hankook RS-3 rubber, some Wilwood performance brakes and Stance suspensions to keep the 750 ponies in check.

For the 2013 racing season the FR-S will be driven by Tony Angelo.

Lucas Oil KSR announced its racing version of the Scion FR-S at the 2012 SEMA Show and since then the model underwent extreme testing with the final challenge being the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge. The competition started on March 22nd with the GT/GTS Rounds 1 and 2 and will end on October 4th with GT/GTS Round 14.

Lucas Oil equipped the FR-S with the world’s first TRD supercharger built specifically for the sports car. It was enough to pump the 2.0-liter boxer-four engine’s output up to a total of 325 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. That’s an increase of 125 horsepower and 174 pound feet of torque. By our count, that’s a 62.5-percent increase in horsepower and a 115.2-percent increase in torque.

This hopped-up four-banger hooks up to a six-speed manual gearbox, but there is no mention to whether this is the stock transmission or not. Though Lucas Oil chose not to divulge the performance stats of its beast, we would venture to say it hits 60 mph in the mid-4-second range.

Lucas oil engineers also fitted the FR-S with an aerodynamic kit specially designed for the racing and sat it atop a set of 18-inch Rays TE37 SL Black Edition wheels. The Rays rollers are wrapped in high-performance Pirelli P-Zero tires sized 275/45R18. Also added in is a TRD braking system and a suspension system from Cusco/Vertex.

During the competition, this Scion FR-S by Lucas Oil KSR will be driven by Robert Stout, who was previously a champion in a Scion tC.

2013 Scion FR-S Pikes Peak Racer

Though it doesn’t have the same racing history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb as other automakers, Scion is bent on making a mark at this year’s race.

For the occasion, the Japanese automaker has introduced the car that will compete against the heavyweights of the Unlimited Class: an Evasive Motorsports-prepared Scion FR-S that, if for nothing else, looks the part of a giant killer.

Prepared and developed to the unique racing specifications needed to compete at Pikes Peak, the FR-S comes with a bevy of aerodynamic components, highlighted by that enormous rear wing that should come in handy when the FR-S is trying to keep its wheels on the ground.

A large front wing was also installed on the car, as well as what looks like an equally large rear diffuser, both serving the same aerodynamic purpose of eliminating aerodynamic lift to allow the FR-S to maintain its speed as it attempts to give all the other competitors of the Unlimited Class a run for their money.

No power details were given but considering the kind of cars that are competing in this class, we wouldn’t be surprised if this high-powered FR-S has over 650 horsepower under its hood. That is quite a healthy increase over the stock 200 horsepower, but still very much attainable.

Scion FR-S by Meguiar Available for Forza Motorsport 4 and Forza Horizon

Forza Motorsport 4 and Forza Horizon are further expanding their lineups with the addition of a the Scion FR-S by Meguair. In real life, the model was unveiled at the 2012 SEMA Show and it will now hold a spot in gaming eternity in these two games.

The Scion FR-S by Meguair is available as a free download for any person who owns Forza Horizon, or for Forza Motorsport 4 and purchased the August Playseat Car Pack. Each game will also get a new “Rivals Mode” race event that offers players the chance to test out their new cars in competition.

2013 Scion 10 Series FR-S

Scion is celebrating its first 10 years in business with the launch of a series of special editions applied to the every vehicle in its lineup. Called 10 Series, this new limited edition made its world debut today at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

The model that catches our attention is the FR-S variant, of course. The special 10 Series FR-S is painted in an exclusive premium color called Silver Ignition combined with an LED Scion locator badge that lights up when the driver unlocks the car. Most of the updates were made inside the cabin, where the new 10 Series adds silver seat belts, a solar-powered illuminated shift knob, sequentially numbered interior badge and a Scion 10 Series logo placed on the dash.

For the FR-S, Scion also offers HID headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, dual automatic climate control and a smart key with push-button-start ignition.

The new 10 Series special edition will arrive in dealerships this June. Scion plans a total of 10,000 10 Series units, and the FR-S will make up 2,000 of those units units.

Update 5/9/2013: Scion has just released pricing for the 2014 FR-S 10 Series. The six-speed manual transmission model will start at $27,425 and the automatic transmission model will start at $28,675.

2013 Scion FR-S Rocket Bunny by SR Auto Group

Canadian tuner, SR Auto Group, has a habit of releasing some of the most unique and impressive programs you’ll ever see. Its latest work, which it worked on in collaboration with Openroad Scion, further solidifies that point.

Using a stock Scion FR-S, SR Auto Group decked it with a comprehensive aerodynamic body kit, giving it a new and far more imposing appearance that no standard FR-S can even come close to.

The car, which has since been rechristened as Rocket Bunny, is fully kitted, complete with wide-body fender flares, a new front lip, side skirts, a rear diffuser, and a large rear GT wing. But that’s not all. It also has a couple Seibon parts in a new carbon-fiber hood and fog light covers. Carbon-fiber side mirrors from APR have all been added, as were bespoke smoked headlight housings and candy red taillight surroundings.

The final pieces of this stunning program include a set of 18-inch "Winning Blue" Rays Gram Lights 57 Extreme wheels, an Invidia catback exhaust system to further bolster the sports car’s performance credentials and a set of fully adjustable BC Racing coilovers with a 10 kg (22-pound) spring rate.

While it doesn’t have any straightforward performance enhancements, we can surmise that with the new exhaust, together with all those new aero kits, the Rocket Bunny FR-S has a little more roar to it than stock FR-S models.

Last week we heard the first rumors suggesting that Scion could develop more body styles for its FR-S sports coupe. A rumor was all we needed to start imagining what these models would look like. Yesterday we brought you a rendering of a FR-S sedan and today it’s time for something even crazier: the FR-S Shooting Brake.

According to Scion FR-S chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, such a variant will be specially developed for those big families that want to enjoy a great sports car. He added that every time he goes out, he wants to take all his five dogs with him, so you see why such a crazy model is needed, right?

If built, the FR-S Shooting Brake will most likely feature the same technology as the coupe. This nets it a 2.0-liter boxer-four engine that delivers a total of 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

However, we suggest not to start saving for such a model because we strongly doubt it will be even put into production. One thing is certain, the shooting brake is more likely than a sedan.

2013 Scion FR-S Coupe by TF-Works

The Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ are getting quite the love from aftermarket companies. Maybe it’s time we show the same for the Scion FR-S.

Illinois-based tuning firm, TF-Works, is preparing a special program for the FR-S, one that gives it the kind of aftermarket punch that the GT 86 and the BRZ are normally accustomed to.

The program comes with a bevy of new features, not the least of which includes a "Version Select" carbon-fiber body kit with new components added on like an extended front apron, a new trunk spoiler, and a hot set of 19-inch matte-silver, concave Vossen wheels. The program is still in the middle of being worked on so we expect more goodies to be added on to the mix.

For now, TF-Works has released the price for the known components included in the "Version Select" kit. So if you’re ready to splurge on your FR-S, be sure you have at least $2,500 at your disposal. We’ll bring you more, as it rolls out.

Scion FR-S Chief Interested in Sedan and Shooting Brake Versions

In an interview with AutoGuide, Scion FR-S chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, explained that the Open Top Concept was the next logical step for the GT 86, but he also confirmed that the company is not done with exploring possibilities with the FR-S lineup. Tada explained that the he wants to do with the sports coupe the same BMW did with the Mini family.

It looks like Tada is set on pushing the car’s body to its limits and wants to add at least one sedan and shooting brake version - the latter one being specially developed for his five dogs. His words, not ours.

In the same interview, Tada talked about the new collaboration between Toyota and BMW that will bring a new sports car to the two companies’ lineups. The company is hoping to obtain "a product that none of us could have imagined; something more than anyone expects." We are wondering if this new sports car will also end getting more body versions like Tada would like to see from the FR-S.

In the latest episode of his "Head 2 Head" show, Carlos Lago from MotorTrend put two of the coolest sports car on the market — the 2013 Mazda Miata Club Edition and the 2013 Scion FR-S — head to head. Of course, for this test you will have to forget the numbers and understand it is just a fight made for fun.

The Scion FR-S will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds and the Miata Club Edition in 6.1 seconds. The quarter-mile times are pretty much identical, as the MX-5 runs it in 14.7 seconds at a speed of 92.8 mph and the FR-S in 14.8 seconds at a speed of 95.1 mph. With these numbers aside, which car is more fun to drive?

2013 Scion FR-S Toyota Pro/Celebrity Racecar

Scion tC has been the annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Racecar ever since 2005, but things have changed for the 2013 model year. Toyota has decided to switch from the usual tC to the newer and more capable FR-S. The model has been specially designed to celebrate the 37th anniversary of one of America’s most entertaining motorsports events.

The standard Scion FR-S delivers a total of 200 horsepower, which isn’t too shabby. In the race version, however, the 2.0-liter boxer engine has been tricked to deliver a total of 210 horsepower. Along with the 10 extra horsepower, this race-ready FR-S has been equipped with numerous other enhancements from Toyota Racing Development (TRD): stainless-steel exhaust, coil-over shocks and springs, big-brake kit with Hawk Performance brake pads, performance air intake and a set of 18-inch wheels.

In order to deliver the maximum performance while on the race track, TRD also installed a Centerforce single-disc racing clutch, front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbone suspension. The extra ponies shouldn’t do too much in terms of enhancing its performance, but the updated clutch should drop a tenth of a second off of its base 0-to-60 time, and the new braking and suspension components should help it in the twist.

Toyota didn’t offer any specifics on what’s inside the cockpit, but the images tell us all we really need to know. We can see that the front seats remain from the base model, but the rear seat backs are gone, a roll cage was installed and a set of red Simpson racing harnesses keep the driver and passenger save.

Matt Farah understands what makes for a sick race car. The host of Tuned has probably even seen and driven it all, yet there’s no mistaking the excitement in his voice when he was afforded the opportunity to check out VCMC Motorsports’ turbo-packed Scion FR-S at the Chukwalla Raceway in California.

As for the car itself, it was made in Canada by VCMC and Shift Auto Challenge as part of the Canadian version of the FR-S Tuner Challenge (the U.S. versions were all on display at SEMA). In achieving the 350-horsepower output on this FR-S, VCMC installed a motorsports-grade turbo kit, added nine pounds of boost and fitted KW Variant 3 coilovers, all while stripping down the interior to get rid of all the unnecessary components that don’t have a place in a full-blown race car, thus reducing the weight to about 2,400 pounds.

As you can imagine, Farah was impressed with the car after taking it out for a few laps at Chukwalla. We’d probably be as impressed too, if we had a chance to sit behind the wheel and go for a few laps, but we trust in Farah’s judgment. If it’s good for him, it’s good for us.

Besides, when you put 350 horses on that boxer-four engine and strip down the weight in the process, you know you have a pretty darn good weekend racer to play with.

2013 Scion FR-S by Vivid Racing

The SEMA Auto Show has come and gone, yet some aftermarket companies are still in the process of unveiling their project cars on the Web. One of these companies is Vivid Racing who has finally released details on its SEMA Scion FR-S project car.

We don’t mind getting information about this car so late because it’s pretty sick to begin with and proves that some things really are worth the wait. For this program, Vivid Racing took the task of giving the FR-S a far more aggressive look and it accomplished that by first giving the sports coupe an INGs aero kit. The kit includes a new front bumper, side skirts, rear spats, and a carbon fiber GT wing which makes the FR-S look like a bonafide road warrior.

A new carbon fiber hood and a carbon fiber trunk were also added and come courtesy of Seibon. With these new materials in tow, the FR-S already weighs 40 lbs less than its standard trim. Add the carbon mirror covers and carbon fender inserts from Agency Power, two sets of 19-inch Niche Wheels — the driver side features a tinted brushed and gold multi-spoke with polished lip design, and the passenger side features a matte black thick 5-spoke design with a dark smoke brushed lip — wrapped in Toyo tires and a set of upgraded Brembo GT brakes, and you have the full breadth of Vivid Racing’s exterior package for the FR-S.

Meanwhile, the interior of the car received its share of upgrades, too. Ring GT-X carbon fiber bucket seats in black ultra-suede with red stitching and 5-point, red, FIA-approved harnesses all come by way of Status Racing. Agency Power also supplied a bolt-in harness bar and a billet shift knob to round out the interior package.

Last but certainly not least are the engine upgrades. Though no official numbers were given, Vivid Racing, together with Agency Power, really went to town in giving the FR-S improved power, highlighted by adding updated versions of the sports car’s headers, overpipe, and cutback. They also installed a short ram Agency Power intake kit and a lightweight aluminum crank pulley, as well as dual 4.5" titanium exhaust tips. To help keep the power under control, a large sway bar on the rear, full CNC-machined adjustable control arms, and sway bar links were installed.

SEMA was BRZ and FR-S Heaven, as 50 Different Images Emerge

Okay, we all pretty much figured that the BRZ and FR-S would likely have a strong presence in SEMA this year, as it was only one of the most talked about cars all year. To boot, with Toyota and Subaru dragging their collective feet about releasing higher-performance models, aftermarket companies have been working double-time to develop performance parts to hop up its 200-horsepower 4-banger engine.

Our colleagues over at Rides magazine managed to compile a gallery chock-full of just about every BRZ and FR-S at SEMA. We’re not too sure if this is a complete list of the examples at SEMA, but the total count in the gallery is 50 different examples – all but one or two are of the FR-S. We’re not too sure exactly how many cars showed up for SEMA this year, but we can say with some confidence that the FR-S takes the trophy for most heavily represented at the show.

2013 Scion FR-S by Ken Stout Racing

The Scion FR-S has stolen the show at SEMA and not just because the company set up a tuning challenge for three companies to compete in. It looks like most of the tuning packages seen in Las Vegas were based on the tiny sports coupe, with some of the most impressive ones being the FR-S GT by Daniel Song and the FR-S Evasive Motorsports.

Along with the other tuning packages released, Ken Stout Racing (KSR) has unveiled the FR-S Pirelli World Challenge Race Car that will be raced in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class starting March 2013. Their FR-S has been fully equipped for the race track, receiving a full roll cage, a five-point safety harness, an OMP flat-bottom steering wheel, and a Racetech racing seat. The car sits on a new set of 18" wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires and features a huge APR carbon-fiber wing that helps improve aerodynamics.

Under the hood, the car’s standard boxer engine has received a TRD supercharger, a C&R radiator, and JE forged pistons. Other additions include a new Vertex exhaust system, a new suspension, and new racing brakes.
