The Scion brand was created to appeal to the younger population. Instead of spending money on R&D, however, Scion had a bad habit of bringing about badge-engineered to Scion dealerships. For 2016, the brand was hoping to create more interest in the brand by debuting two new models – the Scion iA and the Scion iM. The Scion iM was a compact hatchback that was derived from the Toyota Corolla Wagon, or Auris, as the rest of the world knows it. Targeted at youth throughout North America, the iM was available with the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder from the Toyota Corolla Eco. It put out 137 horsepower and was able to attain 37 mpg on the highway. Outside it had fairly stylish looks and a pretty sporty front fascia. Mild body lines gave the car a sleek appearance. Inside the car had a pretty upscale cabin for a car that commanded less than $20,000, featuring dual zone climate control, a seven-inch infotainment system and other little technological and safety goodies.
Just like the iA, Scion was hoping the iM would generate some more cash flow and breathe new life into a company that was quite literally on its last leg. As you probably already know at this point, however, these new models didn’t come soon enough to save the company and the Scion brand has now been discontinued. So, for the 2017 model year, you’ll find the iM marketed under the Toyota brand as the Corolla iM. With that said, it’s time to take a look at our full review of the iM before we start seeing it with a Toyota badge plastered to the back of it. The iM is currently going for just more than $18,000 but expect that pricing to increase a little bit under the Toyota name.

The Scion IA was essentially a rebadged version of the Mazda2 and was even built alongside it at Mazda’s plant in Mexico. It was new for the 2016 model year and made its debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Compared to the Mazda 2, the front end had a different design and the front grille was different, but that was about the extent of it. Inside, the IA is pretty much a direct carryover from the Mazda2. It did feature some premium features like a center display screen and a fairly upscale look for a compact vehicle. The Scion IA may look like a compact sports sedan, but under the hood, there’s nothing to write home about. The car was offered with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder that delivers just 106 horsepower and a combined fuel economy of 37 mpg. With a six-speed manual transmission, the IA was priced at $15,700 while those equipped with an automatic transmission were priced at $16,800.
The IA, along with the Scion IM was originally intended to breathe some new life into the struggling Scion brand. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, and the Scion brand has since been discontinued. The IA will carry on, however, as the Toyota Yaris IA starting in August of 2016 for 2017. Despite switching over to the Toyota branding, the IA will carry on as a competitor for the Kia Rio and the Nissan Versa, among others, but whether or not the IA will indeed be the hit Scion expected it to be has yet to be seen. With that said, take a look at our full review below to see the car that could have potentially saved the Scion brand had it come to the market sooner than it did.

Toyota is gearing up to give the Scion FR-S a mid-cycle refresh next year, and rumors have it the car will come with brand new styling updates, improved suspension components, and, much to the chagrin of enthusiasts everywhere, a ridiculously modest power increase.
Citing an unidentified company insider, Aussie publication Motoring says the 2.0-liter flat-four powerplant will receive just minor mechanical improvements: "Engineers have focused on friction reduction engineering and a more efficient intake manifold design that will boost power and torque by around five percent, while improving fuel efficiency by up to seven percent," the source is quoted.
That means the Subaru-derived boxer engine will get nudged up to 210 horsepower from its original 200 horsepower. Not much, but certainly a step in the right direction. I guess.
Aesthetically, the car’s exterior will get a new front end consisting of a restyled hood, headlights, bumper and enlarged lower grille. In the back will be a new bumper, diffuser, and twin exhaust outlets that are moved further toward the corners of the car.
And while few have complained about the FR-S’ handling capabilities, Motoring’s insider says the new car will come with “extensive chassis tuning feedback” from GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by Meister of Nurburgring), Toyota’s motorsports partner and in-house go-faster division. New Sachs dampers are expected to make the list of standard equipment, improving ride quality while maintaining the car’s highly praised cornering balance. The rear suspension subframe will also get reinforced for a stiffer tail.

Toyota has filed a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to obtain protection for the name Scion iR. The April 23 filing describes an automobile that “seats four or more passengers and is lawful for use on U.S., Puerto Rican, or Canadian interstate highways.”
The loose description of the iR from the filing is the only information known about the upcoming Scion, but it’s not hard to imagine what Scion has planned. It’s possible Scion is replacing the xD, the tallish, slab-sided hatchback whose production ended in 2014.
Slumping sales are plaguing Scion, with the first quarter of 2015 showing a 17.1 percent drop. Both the iQ and sadly, the FR-S, are responsible for much of the slow sales, with the FR-S down 28.6 percent over last year.
But hope is on the horizon. The iR will eventually join the upcoming Scion iA and iM sedan and hatchback slated to enter production for the 2016 model year. The pair will arrive just in time, hopefully expanding Toyota’s youth brand’s market reach and customer base.
The iA mark’s Scion’s first attempt at offering a more traditional sedan, while the iM will offer more cargo room, since it’s basically a Corolla wagon, or as it’s otherwise known, the Toyota Auris. The iA, on the other hand, is a rebadged Mazda2. There’s no word on what will underpin the iR.

The Scion brand has slipped away from the cutting edge in recent years, and Toyota’s planning a significant product push in the next 12 months to rejuvenate the lineup with fresh ideas and fresh sheet metal. Despite rumors, however, don’t look for a crossover from the youthful brand. Scion’s willing to think outside the box, but it isn’t ready to go there.
As Scion’s sales have slowed and the product line has aged, there’s been some question as to whether the brand has lost its way. Introduced in 2002 as a hipper, younger alternative to the average Toyota, Scion quickly became a major contributor to the revolution in the subcompact market. Small, efficient cars didn’t have to be cheap-looking or boring, Scion opined, and the rest of the industry followed suit. These days the average entry-level car isn’t a ride that you buy just because you can’t afford anything else, but can be an entertaining and classy extension of your personality.
Scion helped to create this climate, but then the revolution seemed to pass it by. Ford, Honda, Mini, Fiat and even Kia and Hyundai became the go-to cars for the automotive hipsters that Scion was hoping to attract. Toyota’s keen to reverse this slide, and to that end unveiled the first of several all-new models at the New York Auto Show.

Last year wasn’t especially kind to Toyota’s Scion brand. Every car in the lineup saw a year-over-year sales decline of at least 6 percent, and the brand as a whole suffered a sales drop of 15.1 percent compared to 2013. But fear not faithful Scion fans and dealers, help is on the way. Toyota has just announced that a production version of the 2014 Scion iM Concept will be debuting in production guise at the 2015 New York Auto Show alongside an unnamed model that will stand as the brand’s first-ever sedan.
Based on the overseas Toyota Auris and revealed at the LA Auto Show, we knew we’d be seeing the new iM sooner rather than later, but other than confirmation of its unveiling, there is no additional information about the new sedan. It isn’t even clear if this four-door will be a rebadged Toyota product like many other Scion cars including the FR-S or a unique vehicle like the tC, which could possibly be the FR-S-based sedan we heard rumors of last year.
Regardless of which way Toyota goes with this sedan, it will help bring a little diversity to a Scion lineup that has relied solely on small hatchbacks and coupes since Toyota created it a decade ago.
Other than the iM and this new sedan, Scion also confirmed that it will debut a third new vehicle within the next three years. This could very easily be a much-needed replacement for the once-trend-setting xB or it could be an entirely new model altogether, but it will definitely inject some youthfulness into a lineup that currently averages more than four years old.

You don’t need to tell us, because we already know: the 2013 to 2015 Scion FR-S is awesome. It’s an affordable sports car in the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a low curb weight and suspension setup that’s perfect for sideways high jinks. What’s not to love? Well, if the reviews are any indication, the slightly anemic four-banger under the hood can put a damper on things. And when it comes to sports cars, a roofless version, if done properly, can be a huge fun-factor multiplier.
So when rumors began to swirl that Toyota was interested in creating turbocharged and cabrio versions of the GT 86 platform, fans everywhere rejoiced. Unfortunately, that celebration appears to have been a bit premature. According to WardsAuto, Scion execs have confirmed the death of the FR-S turbo and convertible.
In an interview at the LA Auto Show last week, Scion’s senior vice president Doug Murtha seems downtrodden as the bearer of bad news: “I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the product and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further.’ Nobody was more disappointed than we were.”
We’re not so sure about that last part, but oh well. While a factory turbo FR-S appears DOA, there’s still copious support from the aftermarket for anyone willing to start down the long, winding path of vehicle modification. As for a roofless FR-S, all we can say is that with enough time and money, anything is possible.

The 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show is just around the corner, and although Toyota isn’t planning on revealing any new production vehicles like it did last year, it’s bringing a couple of intriguing concept cars to display, one of which is the Scion iM. Scion isn’t doing too well these days; most of its offerings are dated and the brand’s future is rather uncertain. However, it seems Scion is thinking outside the box in Los Angeles with a concept car that transforms an otherwise plebeian Toyota into a track-ready hot hatch.
The vehicle in question is the Auris compact, which has yet to reach U.S. shores since its introduction in 2006. It’s indeed awkward for Scion to meddle with a vehicle that’s not available on these shores, but I’m glad it did, as the iM Concept is an aggressively styled hatch with plenty of performance upgrades. Granted, the Auris isn’t a particularly exciting car, but the iM Concept looks like it has a decidedly sporty bend to it. Read on to find out what makes this concept a vehicle Scion needs to approve for mass production.
Updated 11/20/2014: The new Scion iM concept made its world debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. According to the company the iM is a preview version of a versatile five-door compact hatchback that will arrive in dealerships in 2015 at a price starting under $20k.

With Toyota still mum on details, the much rumored Scion FR-S Sedan is still a mystery, but with plenty of speculation floating around it. The only thing we’re sure of is that the FR-S platform has been designed to support a sedan body style, as Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed last year.
Up until now it was believed that the four-door would be powered by the same 2.0-liter boxer engine - good for 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, found in the coupe. Today, however, a report from Motor Trend quoted inside sources claiming the sedan will actually be sold with two different powertrains.
One of them will be a Subaru-sourced turbocharged, 2.0-liter unit found in the current-generation Legacy that’s tuned to deliver at least 300 horsepower and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second model will reportedly gain a hybrid drivetrain, but actual details are unknown except for the fact that Toyota is working on a system "that’s compatible to Subaru’s boxer engine."
The conventional FR-S Sedan is expected to hit showrooms by mid-2016 with the hybrid variant featuring all-wheel-drive to arrive several months later. Compared to the FR-S coupe, the sedan will be 20 inches longer and 4 inches taller for improved interior room.

In October 2013, Toyota announced that the convertible version for the GT86 and the Scion FR-S was put on indefinite hold, because apparently such a car has no place in Toyota’s plans in the near future. This decision was pretty surprising to us, considering that Toyota unveiled the FT86 Open Top Conceptat the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, which made us believe that a convertible GT86/FR-S was just around the corner.
Now, we have new rumors suggesting that Toyota wants the GT86 and FR-S Convertible, but Subaru still has no interest in producing it. As a result, Toyota is now investigating the possibility of developing this car on its own, despite Subaru saying before that Toyota could not do so without its help.
Talking about this issue at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Doug Murtha, vice president for Scion in the U.S., said: "It’s something we’re looking at internally from both a manufacturing standpoint — where do we build something that’s relatively low-volume, if not at Subaru — and from an engineering standpoint: Where are those resources going to come from to do it?"
With this in mind Toyota asked all of its dealers and Scion dealers around the world to submit volume targets for such a model. If interest has increased, Toyota could start looking into the possibility of manufacturing open-top GT86 and FR-S models. However, it will be very difficult to do so, considering that currently the GT86, FR-S and the BRZ bodies are all developed at Subaru’s plant in Ohta, Japan, and retrofitting a convertible top onto a coupe in any bulk may prove too time-consuming to be profitable for Toyota.

Last week we heard the first rumors suggesting that Scion could develop more body styles for its FR-S sports coupe. A rumor was all we needed to start imagining what these models would look like. Yesterday we brought you a rendering of a FR-S sedan and today it’s time for something even crazier: the FR-S Shooting Brake.
According to Scion FR-S chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, such a variant will be specially developed for those big families that want to enjoy a great sports car. He added that every time he goes out, he wants to take all his five dogs with him, so you see why such a crazy model is needed, right?
If built, the FR-S Shooting Brake will most likely feature the same technology as the coupe. This nets it a 2.0-liter boxer-four engine that delivers a total of 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.
However, we suggest not to start saving for such a model because we strongly doubt it will be even put into production. One thing is certain, the shooting brake is more likely than a sedan.
At the 2012 SEMA Show, we got a look at a few Scion (Toyota) sponsored FR-S models featuring superchargers strapped to the tops of their 200-horsepower boxer engines. With that, we began wondering if Toyota was planning to add a supercharger to the FR-S mix and if this was a way to see how the FR-S would respond to it. Sure, Toyota played the denial game in terms of a turbocharged model, but nothing was ever said about a supercharger.
A new report from Car and Driver, following a sit down with TRD at SEMA, is showing that there is interest in adding a supercharger to the line of manufacturer-backed performance upgrades. While there is still no official confirmation, the pure fact that TRD would confirm that there is interest pretty much locks it in. Manufacturers will rarely offer up information on unconfirmed products, let alone let loose that there is an interest.
There, of course, are no specifications to release yet, as TRD is obviously still in R&D mode with this experiment. Given Toyota has to strap a warranty to this package; we wouldn’t expect to see much more than about 6 pounds of boost. While there are too many variables to be accurate on estimate output, this would likely equate out to a 60 to 70-horsepower gain from a supercharger on top of the Scion’s engine.
For now, we are simply speculating, but a 270-horsepower, supercharged FR-S sure does sound like load of fun to us! We’ll keep a very close eye on this situation and get you updates as soon as they come out.
A few weeks ago, we let you in on the conversation that Car and Driver had with executives from Subaru and Toyota about the possibility of a turbocharger on the BRZ, GT 86, and FR-S. It was a flat out “No” on the FR-S and an “Eh, maybe, but not now” on the BRZ and GT 86. Well, first off we think that’s a load of corporate horse manure, as Subaru and Toyota would be out of their engine control modules not to force at least 8 psi into that new jointly built 2.0-liter engine.
Apparently, Subaru is taking a nibble of the bait that us turbo junkies are tossing in the water, as it has just completed development on a turbocharged version of the FA20 engine used in the BRZ, GT 86, and FR-S family. This engine is not an identical twin to the FA20, so don’t go getting your hopes up yet, but it is its fraternal twin at least. The only real difference is that Subaru scrapped the Toyota fuel injection system in favor of its own direct-injection system.
So what kind of power are we talking about? We are hearing that it cranks out a whopping 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque! Now for the bad news… As of now, this engine is only slated to be dropped into the JDM-spec Legacy. To make things worse, Subaru is linking this awesome engine to a CVT. What a gigantic waste.
Don’t go getting all sad on us now, this is a good start that Subaru is willing to slap some boost on this puppy and get nearly 300 ponies and 300 twisting power. Now just imagine that in a BRZ…
So we will reiterate what we said before. Regardless of what smoke and mirrors Subaru and Toyota throw up there, we will see boost in at least the BRZ and GT 86, and we would be willing to bet a penny that we see the FR-S whistling down the road one day too.
The Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S, and Subaru BRZ are inching closer to getting a release date, and the lucky dogs over at Edmunds managed to get their hands on an FR-S a little early. Being the true car buffs that they are, what’s the first thing they did with it? They threw it on the dyno, of course!
You may be alarmed wondering why they are dyno testing a car that we all know produces 200 horsepower. Well, that’s not always the case. See, 99.9 percent of the time, automakers release horsepower numbers based off of the engine’s power, not the entire car. On average, you can expect to lose 10 to 20 percent of the horsepower through the driveline – transmission, driveshaft, and differential.
So what was Edmunds’ final determination of its horsepower? It was nothing short of impressively consistent. It repeatedly produced 173 horsepower at roughly 7,000 rpm and 143 pound-feet of torque at about 2,800 rpm. Not only were the peaks identical, but the horsepower and torque curves were nearly identical on every run.
To have that kind of consistency in a car is a testament to just how much engineering went into it. This also proves that the 2.0-liter flat-four that Subaru and Toyota collaborated on is truly a work of art to crank out 173 wheel horsepower. There are not too many sub-$30K four-bangers hitting that kind of horsepower consistently without the use of some forced air.
There is one very odd thing in this engine that again shows how much engineering went into it. At about 4,000 rpm you will see a 14-percent drop in torque, which the Subaru and Toyota engineers intentionally did to allow greater torque on the lower rpm range. Our collective hats go off to the team of engineers that developed this car. Now, can we just get a hold of a turbocharged model, please?
Now that the GT 86 has officially been revealed in all three of its versions - Toyota, Scion, and Subaru - the car’s lead engineer, Tetsuya Tada, has confirmed that a convertible version will follow in the near future: "The GT 86 was designed from the outset that we can build it as a convertible."
Considering the Coupe model isn’t even for sale yet - it will be available in Spring 2012 - we don’t expect to see the Convertible anytime before next year. When it does come out, it will be offered on the Japanese market first, as a Toyota GT 86 Convertible, and the markets in the rest of the world will then follow.
All the technology and the design language will be borrowed from the coupe, except that the rear seat area will most likely be dropped. Under the hood, we’ll see the same 2.0 liter, naturally-aspirated petrol engine with 200 HP.
Prices for the future Scion FR-S Convertible will probably stand at about $2000 above the Coupe model, so it should be anywhere above $30,000.

Now, we know we have already seen two concepts- FT-86 and FT-86 II - for this vehicle, but will have to endure one more as Toyota has brought us yet another FT-86 concept. This time it has been revealed at the New York Auto Show under the Scion badge and it won’t go into production until Toyota finally brings their production version later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Scion FR-S Concept is a preview version of a new model coming to the Scion brand next year.
"Scion is always experimenting with new things," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will expand the brand into yet another new dimension that I know it is truly destined for."
Like with the other Toyota model, the Scion model is being inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning "8-6" in Japanese. The concept is being built on a rear-wheel-drive platform and is powered by a 2.0-liter boxer front engine that can be mated with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
UPDATE 04/28/2011: Toyota has revealed a new video showing off the Scion FR-S concept’s revving engine. The sound should be the same or very similar for all three Scion FR-S / Toyota-Subaru FT-86 cars since they will all feature the same Boxer engine and exhaust setup. Hit the jump for the video.
UPDATE 05/20/2011: Testing is still underway for the Scion FR-S, and while it was circling the track, spy photographers were able to get a shot of the newly fitted and massive wing attached to the back. Seems a little exaggerated to us, but hey, we’ve waited so long to see this car in action that we will take just about anything they throw at us at this point. Check out the video after the jump.
UPDATE 06/24/2011: Scion has unveiled a new video of their latest FR-S concept in which Ken Gushi - a resident Scion Racing driver - talks about about the Scion FR-S concept car and what it means to him. For those that don’t recognize the name, Gushi started his driving career in the iconic Toyota AE86 also known as the "hachiroku". The AE86 is important because the FR-S is modeled after the prime drifting vehicle.

The current Scion line-up only includes three models, but things are about to change. Early next year Scion will offer the new iQ minicar and it will be followed by a few other products including a production version of the Hako concept unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show.
According to Jack Hollis, vice president of Scion, the future line-up will be a "a mix of evolution and revolution". The future line-up might also include a rear-wheel-drive compact performance vehicle and a production version of theToyota A-BAT pickup concept. In the next few years we also expect redesigns - or replacements - for both the xB and xD models.
"I don’t think Scion needs to be reinvented, but we need to find the next dimension," Hollis said. Hollis declined to say whether the vehicles would be additions to the lineup or made to replace existing vehicles, but in the past, Hollis said that if the Hako were built, it would be an addition.
