2017 Scion tC Release Series 10.0
It’s only been a little over a month since we news broke that the Scion brand would be no more, and now, Scion is set to make one final appearance in the place where it debuted the first Scion model – the New York Auto Show. Scion is looking to use the show has a final farewell and will display a number of models from the last 14 years, including the 2002 BBx Concept, 2004 FiveAxis speedster xA, 2009 Kogi BBQ Truck xD, 2009 iQ Concept, 2011 FR-S concept, and the 2014 Slayer tC. That isn’t all Scion is bringing to its last Auto Show, though.
Meet the Scion tC Release Series 10.0, a model that was designed in partnership with Kei Miura. As a final farewell, this special tC is equipped with a number of performance and visual enhancements that is said to make it the best production tC ever built. Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland said, “For those enthusiasts looking for a piece of history, this is a great opportunity to own our best tC ever. With the TRD performance parts, the JDM Aero Kit and the screaming red and black color scheme, it’s a fitting tribute to Scion’s mission to build cars for younger customers.” He continued, “We have a lot of fans that are sorry to see Scion being transitioned to Toyota. But it’s the right thing to do, and we know the spirit of Scion will live on, so we are going out in style.”
Scion is a youth-oriented brand, and aside from a couple of good years, it has struggled with sales pretty hard over its lifetime. There may be fans out there, but as unfortunate as it is for the brand, there weren’t enough fans to keep it alive. With that said, let’s take a look at Scions final model and see what Scion and Kei Miura did to leave a lasting impression on the world.

The Scion brand was created to appeal to the younger population. Instead of spending money on R&D, however, Scion had a bad habit of bringing about badge-engineered to Scion dealerships. For 2016, the brand was hoping to create more interest in the brand by debuting two new models – the Scion iA and the Scion iM. The Scion iM was a compact hatchback that was derived from the Toyota Corolla Wagon, or Auris, as the rest of the world knows it. Targeted at youth throughout North America, the iM was available with the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder from the Toyota Corolla Eco. It put out 137 horsepower and was able to attain 37 mpg on the highway. Outside it had fairly stylish looks and a pretty sporty front fascia. Mild body lines gave the car a sleek appearance. Inside the car had a pretty upscale cabin for a car that commanded less than $20,000, featuring dual zone climate control, a seven-inch infotainment system and other little technological and safety goodies.
Just like the iA, Scion was hoping the iM would generate some more cash flow and breathe new life into a company that was quite literally on its last leg. As you probably already know at this point, however, these new models didn’t come soon enough to save the company and the Scion brand has now been discontinued. So, for the 2017 model year, you’ll find the iM marketed under the Toyota brand as the Corolla iM. With that said, it’s time to take a look at our full review of the iM before we start seeing it with a Toyota badge plastered to the back of it. The iM is currently going for just more than $18,000 but expect that pricing to increase a little bit under the Toyota name.

The Scion IA was essentially a rebadged version of the Mazda2 and was even built alongside it at Mazda’s plant in Mexico. It was new for the 2016 model year and made its debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Compared to the Mazda 2, the front end had a different design and the front grille was different, but that was about the extent of it. Inside, the IA is pretty much a direct carryover from the Mazda2. It did feature some premium features like a center display screen and a fairly upscale look for a compact vehicle. The Scion IA may look like a compact sports sedan, but under the hood, there’s nothing to write home about. The car was offered with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder that delivers just 106 horsepower and a combined fuel economy of 37 mpg. With a six-speed manual transmission, the IA was priced at $15,700 while those equipped with an automatic transmission were priced at $16,800.
The IA, along with the Scion IM was originally intended to breathe some new life into the struggling Scion brand. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, and the Scion brand has since been discontinued. The IA will carry on, however, as the Toyota Yaris IA starting in August of 2016 for 2017. Despite switching over to the Toyota branding, the IA will carry on as a competitor for the Kia Rio and the Nissan Versa, among others, but whether or not the IA will indeed be the hit Scion expected it to be has yet to be seen. With that said, take a look at our full review below to see the car that could have potentially saved the Scion brand had it come to the market sooner than it did.

The Scion xB still looks like a shoebox, but give credit to Scion for not giving up on this model when so many others would have. On the contrary, Scion’s actually continuing to build up the xB with debut of the Release Series 10.0, a specially designed xB that comes with a whole new list of modern technologies.
Limited to just 1,500 units — like the FR-S Release Series 1.0 — the xB Release Series 10.0 doesn’t completely change the vehicle’s outward appearance, but it does have a host of modifications that at least makes it look a little more presentable. That’s probably the only recourse Scion has in differentiating the xB Release Series 10.0 from the standard version, so it set out to do just that, dressing up the model with am Electric Quartz paint that it describes as a mixture of pearl white with subtle green highlights.
That’s just the beginning of a range of new bits for the xB Release Series 10.0. But the best part is that the model is expected to hit dealerships this summer at a price of $20,420, excluding the $755 in delivery, processing and handling fees. Not too bad for a relatively exclusive xB.

Why oh why must Toyota and Scion continuously tease us with fast-looking versions of the GT 86 and FR-S, but never actually release one with any go-fast bits on it? Well, here is yet another example of all show and no go from Toyota, as Scion has unveiled its FR-S Release Series 1.0 in New York, and revealed even more that it couldn’t care less what the masses are asking for.
The only good thing to come from this new version is that it will be limited to just 1,500 units and feature a few useful gadgets among the useless, rice-boy add-on equipment. We’ll start with the good stuff, which includes push-button start, black seats with a "T" pattern, HID headlights and automatic dual climate control. Those are all nice additions, but Toyota went ahead and riced this bad-boy out with its TRD Quad Tip Exhaust System, lowering springs, aero kit with a rear spoiler and fender garnishes.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all not calling the FR-S Release Series 1.0 ugly by any means, but I take issue with slapping all of that extra weight onto the FR-S and making it look the part of a racer without bumping the actual performance. Sure, the lowering springs may make it more agile — doubtful — but the engine remains the same 200-horsepower, 151-pound-feet unit it’s always had. The only hope that we have is that the TRD exhaust system actually frees up a few ponies, but there is no mention of that.
According to Scion, the FR-S Release Series 1.0 will cost "under $30,000" plus handling and destination charges.
Guess we’ll continue to wait for a performance version of the GT 86/FR-S/BRZ triplets...

With the exception of the FR-S, Scion has long been a brand we pretty much shied away from. Not that there’s anything wrong with it; it’s just not the type of automaker that we follow. However, when Scion began teasing the fact that it was set to unveil an all-new tC at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, our ears perked up just a little bit.
For those that don’t remember, the tC was, at one time, the talk of Scon, as it was the only real “sports” model that the econo-box manufacturer offered. However, when Scion redesigned the model in 2011, it left a whole lot to be desired.
Well, with all of the teasing coming out of the Scion offices about the 2014 tC, we should be ready for something that’ll take our breath away, right?
Updated 05/15/2014: Scion today announced prices for the 2015 tC, plus a series of small updates that will make the sports car even more pleasant to drive. The model gets two new colors: Cosmic Gray replaces Classic Silver and Super White, while the automatic models will get steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Prices will start from $19,210 for the manual version and $20,360 for the automatic one.

Scion is celebrating its first 10 years in business with the launch of a series of special editions applied to the every vehicle in its lineup. Called 10 Series, this new limited edition made its world debut today at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
The model that catches our attention is the FR-S variant, of course. The special 10 Series FR-S is painted in an exclusive premium color called Silver Ignition combined with an LED Scion locator badge that lights up when the driver unlocks the car. Most of the updates were made inside the cabin, where the new 10 Series adds silver seat belts, a solar-powered illuminated shift knob, sequentially numbered interior badge and a Scion 10 Series logo placed on the dash.
For the FR-S, Scion also offers HID headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, dual automatic climate control and a smart key with push-button-start ignition.
The new 10 Series special edition will arrive in dealerships this June. Scion plans a total of 10,000 10 Series units, and the FR-S will make up 2,000 of those units units.
Update 5/9/2013: Scion has just released pricing for the 2014 FR-S 10 Series. The six-speed manual transmission model will start at $27,425 and the automatic transmission model will start at $28,675.
Now, we know we have already seen two concepts- FT-86 and FT-86 II - for this vehicle, but will have to endure one more as Toyota has brought us yet another FT-86 concept. This time it has been revealed at the New York Auto Show under the Scion badge and it won’t go into production until Toyota finally brings their production version later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Scion FR-S Concept is a preview version of a new model coming to the Scion brand next year.
"Scion is always experimenting with new things," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will expand the brand into yet another new dimension that I know it is truly destined for."
Like with the other Toyota model, the Scion model is being inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning "8-6" in Japanese. The concept is being built on a rear-wheel-drive platform and is powered by a 2.0-liter boxer front engine that can be mated with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
UPDATE 04/28/2011: Toyota has revealed a new video showing off the Scion FR-S concept’s revving engine. The sound should be the same or very similar for all three Scion FR-S / Toyota-Subaru FT-86 cars since they will all feature the same Boxer engine and exhaust setup. Hit the jump for the video.
UPDATE 05/20/2011: Testing is still underway for the Scion FR-S, and while it was circling the track, spy photographers were able to get a shot of the newly fitted and massive wing attached to the back. Seems a little exaggerated to us, but hey, we’ve waited so long to see this car in action that we will take just about anything they throw at us at this point. Check out the video after the jump.
UPDATE 06/24/2011: Scion has unveiled a new video of their latest FR-S concept in which Ken Gushi - a resident Scion Racing driver - talks about about the Scion FR-S concept car and what it means to him. For those that don’t recognize the name, Gushi started his driving career in the iconic Toyota AE86 also known as the "hachiroku". The AE86 is important because the FR-S is modeled after the prime drifting vehicle.

The 2011 tC is built on a new platform and features a specially tuned MacPherson strut front-suspension and a double-wishbone rear-suspension. Under the hood there is a new 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 180 hp (19hp and 11lbs.-ft. or torque more than the previous model) coupled to either a six-speed manual transmission with improved shift-feel or a six-speed automatic with two additional gears and sequential shift.
The exterior design gets protruding fender flares, a sleek front grille, and projector headlamps, while the modified cabin’s shape is inspired by the Scion FUSE concept unveiled back in 2006. Passengers can now relax comfortably in the elongated cabin with reclining rear seat that split 60/40.
The new Scion tC also arrives with key safety features such as standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), active front-headrests, and eight airbags.
UPDATE 08/06/2010: Scion has announced prices for the 2011 Scion tC sports coupe. You can purchase the tC with a manual transmission for only $18,275 or with an automatic transmission for $19,275. Both also carry a $720 destination and handling charge.

The second generation Scion tC received its first customization program from Five Axis and is currently on display at the 2010 New York Auto Show. The Five Axis tC features a four-inch wide-body conversion, a unique House of Color custom formulated exterior paint by the name of Bloodshot, a Tein adjustable coil-over suspension, a TRD custom Big Brake kit, and 20-inch Yokahama Advan Sport tires mounted onto five AD R5:F wheels.
The interior gets a custom leather-trimmed seats with Ultrasuede EcoDesign inserts, Chilewich floor mats, and upholstery by Little John’s Interior Concepts.
This is not the first time Five Axis has had their crazy, creative hands on a Scion. They have actually worked on every Scion model from the tC to the xA so this custom job comes as no surprise to us.

The 2011 Scion iQ has just been luanched and already it has received its first customization program. The program comes from none other than Five Axis, who presented a couple of customizations for Scion at this year’s 2010 New York Auto Show. The Five Axis Scion iQ was parked right next to the standard iQ.
The customized version is painted in a pearl bismuth silver accented with black chrome titled Titanium. The interior not only gets custom leather-trimmed seats and door inserts, but it also has Little John’s Interior Concepts and custom floor mats provided by Chilewich. The car sits on 18" Yokohama wheels.

At last year’s NY Auto Show, Scion brought the iQ concept, but this year they came packed with the production version. Known as the Toyota iQ on the European market, the Scion iQ is defined as the perfect car for the new trendsetting generation of urban drivers.
The 2011 Scion iQ is powered by a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 90 hp. With a 78.7-inch wheelbase, the iQ offers enough interior room for four passengers. Despite being a very small car, the iQ is offered with a very long list of safety features including: Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRAC) and 10 SRS airbags.

While the IQ is already sold in Japan and Europe as a Toyota, it’s getting its shot at the U.S. with the younger, hipper Scion brand. Unlike the other markets where the 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine is available, the IQ will only be available with the 1.3-liter four cylinder unit. This makes a respectable 93 hp — not bad for a three-seat (plus luggage) car that may return over 55 mpg.

Scion unveiled today at the New York Auto Show the Hako Coupe, a concept developed by Tokyo Design Division. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.
Tokyo Design developed the Hako Coupe with classic American coupes in mind. The car’s geometric profile conveys a powerful stance in a compact and bold package. Its trapezoidal LED headlights lie parallel with a large and aggressive, rectangular upper grille. The lower rectangular grille anchors the front fascia and continues to communicate the Hako’s aggressive attitude. Round fog lights, symmetrically placed high on the front bumper, have integrated turn signals.
The Hako Coupe features a vertical windshield as the concept sits upright and ready to attack the road. A high linear beltline along with a blackened and chopped greenhouse seamlessly wrap around the rear to provide a mysterious profile. As an example of potential personalization, the concept is equipped with a flat, panorama roof that features a random, barcode-like pattern that can be seen on the exterior and from the interior.
Inside, the Hako is accented with orange and metallic detailing that exudes a modern environment with entertainment possibilities. The front and rear seats are covered with urethane and rubber-like upholstery for easy cleaning. The contemporary front bucket seats flow to the floor and incorporate a geometric design on the seatback. The seats are separated by a center console that features a large storage crevice for storing magazines, cell phones, and other small items. Two cockpit-like rear seats also share a storage crevice.
The 2006 Scion tC Release Series 2.0 will come in a brilliant Blue Blitz Mica. This limited edition tC features a stainless steel mesh upper and lower front grille and 17-inch alloy wheels that come with a satin metallic finish. The tC’s only factory option, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags, is standard equipment on the R.S. 2.0.
