Scion has teamed up with Toyo Tires to bring four customized vehicles to the SEMA show that runs from November 3rd to November 6th. There will be four vehicles presented from Scion, one of which is presented by Scion-lifestyle partner Skybound Entertainment.
Skybound Entertainment has made an evil twin of the standard 2016 Scion iA, and it is based on Robert Kirkman’s latest comic book, Outcast. The car, which goes by the name “Outcast” was designed to move and operate on its own, while displaying sequenced light and audio effects. The roof of the car can gyrate, smoke and even change colors while emitting spooky sounds that give the impression that the car is demonically possessed.
The car was built by 5 Axis – a concept vehicle design and fabrication studio, and its modification was managed by Project Leader Geoff Curtis. So, know that you know the basics of the car, click past the jump to get all the details.

With a revised version of the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S rumored to arrive in 2016, the Japanese coupe might finally get the more powerful drivetrain it deserves. Meanwhile, Scion has released yet another "all show and no go" version of the FR-S that gets all sorts of goodies and gadgets but the same 200-horsepower engine.
Meet the FR-S Release Series 2.0, described as "the most stylish version of the sports car ever offered."
If the name sounds familiar is because Scion has already launched a Release Series version of the FR-S. It made its official debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show with a mild aerodynamic kit, a TRD quad exhaust system, a lowered suspension, HID headlamps, and black seats with a "T" pattern. Only 1,500 units were built.
The Release Series 2.0 is pretty much the same thing, sans the TRD exhaust but with a more luxurious cabin. "The FR-S is well known for being a fabulous sports car, and now we’re taking it up a notch in the luxury arena,” said Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland. “It’s the perfect car to take from the race track during the day to the red carpet that evening.”

If you’re familiar with ABC’s TV series Fresh off the boat, then you know something about Eddie Huang. The TV series depicts Eddie’s life in the early 90’s as he grew up in the suburbs of Orlando. Outside the TV show, which was adapted from his book, Eddie Huang was a lawyer who eventually became a chef and now runs BaoHaus restaurant in New York City. Now, Eddie, who is a Scion lifestyle partner, has designed his own 2016 Scion iA that is said to embrace the culture of Los Angeles and have a modern take on the classic lowrider.
Eddie’s custom iA will debut on November 3rd in Las Vegas at SEMA, but we’ve already been blessed with a number of pictures that give us a great preview of what we’ll see in the metal. Eddie went all out on this bad boy, with the help of Scott Kanemura at KMA industries who completed the build. For starters, the car has all the basics of a low rider – Airbag suspension with four-wheel control, swivel front seats and even a chain-link steering wheel. Of course, no low rider would be complete without the gold, wire wheels but that is just the beginning for this Scion.

The rear-drive, two-door FR-S certainly has the right bones for making it big as an all-out race car. With a low curb weight and a highly tunable four-cylinder under the hood, the potential for a podium finish is there. However, with something so new, development time is required to make the transition from untested to competitive. It’s only after grinding through tons of mistakes that a real track champion is born.
One team that certainly paid its dues was All American Racers, headed by racing legend Dan Gurney. Back in the 80s, AAR entered a trio of Toyota Celicas in the highly popular International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTU class to take on the dominant Mazda RX-7. Although the team enjoyed limited success, hard work and relentless development yielded a competitive set of cars by the end of the season. When AAR and the Toyotas moved up to the GTO class, they started to win races.
As a throwback to the IMSA era of GT racing in the U.S., Speedhunters created this FR-S track special for the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge. The challenge is between three media outlets to create the ultimate FR-S in the 90-day lead-in to SEMA. With a budget of $15,000, each competitor is allowed free reign to build a car to wow the judges.
This year, Speedhunters managed to take home the win (along with a $10,000 check). The judges liked the retro theme and custom fabrication personally wrought by technical editor Keith Charnovia, as well as all the cleanly executed performance upgrades. Congratulations, Speedhunters!

In stock trim, the Scion FR-S is simply fantastic. It’s light, agile, and practically begging to be flogged. However, there’s always room for improvement; at least that’s how the folks at Super Street see it. The performance magazine is known for utterly transforming any car its folks lay their hands on, and have extensive experience rendering modifications that produce both substantial performance improvements and show-stopping looks.
The FR-S you see here is no different. It’s Super Street’s entry for the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge; a 90-day race between three media outfits to complete the baddest FR-S before an official reveal at SEMA. In an online poll, Super Street managed to beat out both GT Channel and Speedhunters by a convincing margin. The real question is- what will the judges think?
With one recent FR-S build already under its belt, Super Street has the history to back it. IT also knows what it takes to make a car stand out in a field of top contenders. The strategy employed here is clear: “wider, wilder, and louder.” With a $15,000 budget and enough yellow paint to cover a fleet of school buses, can it take home the win?

Few vehicles represent a love for driving better than a small, rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe. There’s no space for cargo or excess passengers and no compromise in the layout; it’s all about maximizing the interface between the driver and the road, quickening your pulse, and plastering a big banana grin all over your face. There are precious few cars that meet all these criteria, but the Scion FR-S is undoubtedly one of them.
Launched in 2012, the FR-S, and its corporate twin the Subaru BRZ, quickly became the darlings of automotive journalists everywhere. The car is extremely tossable, with a suspension setup that almost encourages sideways hooning, while the naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder provides adequate power for canyon carving.
To help celebrate the supreme awesomeness of this lead-foot daydream, Scion has dared GT Channel, SuperStreet, and Speedhunters to deliver their idea of the ultimate FR-S. Dubbed the Scion Racing Tuner Challenge, each publication was given a new FR-S, a $15,000 budget, and 90 days to complete their creation before the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
With only a few days left until the big event, you can be sure that crunch time is officially on.
GT Channel partnered with MotoIQ and legendary Japanese tuning house Mine’s to produce this FR-S under the guiding principle of “smart, sophisticated and stupid fast.” As a tuner car, the team wanted to build something that was functional and not simply a show queen. It’s a build designed to trounce competitors on the track, but still maintain some degree of civility on the street.

Scion is definitely swinging for the fences with its SEMA offerings. Don’t believe me? Check out this targa-top FR-S and tell me that isn’t a fresh take on the company’s sports coupe. The model is called the FR-S T1 and it was built by Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs. Give some applause to Lookofsky for going against the grain with this targo-top FR-S.
Now I’ve seen some convertible FR-S models here and there, but a targa roof? That’s new to me.
The roof is the unquestioned eye-catcher of this custom-built FR-S, but Lookofsky didn’t stop there. He also gave the FR-S T1 a wide-body kit, slapped on a set of wheels, and added in some performance upgrades.
For my money, you’re not going to see a Scion FR-S that looks as cool as this one. Scion and Jeremy Lookofsky swung hard on this project and nailed it out of the park.

Things don’t get much groovier than this; Riley Hawk’s Skate Tour xB outfitted with all the proper accessories for America’s 1970s van culture. The Scion is destined for the SEMA show happening November 4th through 7th in Las Vegas where the unsuspecting crowd will surely be transfixed by this car-turned-van.
The man responsible for this cultured creation is Scott Kanemura of KMA Productions. He helped Hawk turn childhood memories into reality by bringing back all the classic parts that make ‘70s conversion vans special. “Every element of this Scion xB represents some part of my life,” Hawk says. “I’m looking forward to showing it at SEMA and having people check it out!”
And check it out they will. This “van” has it all. The exterior is compete with hoop-style manual chrome mirrors, chrome grille inserts, Cragar S/S wheels wrapped in fat rubber with raised white letters, a high-roof kit, fish bowl rear windows, and (non-functional) side pipes. The most obvious change is the orange, yellow, and brown stripe job covering the entire vehicle. Mr. B.A. Baracus would be jealous.
Of course, Kanemura had to tie in Hawks love of skateboarding. The back hatch opens up to reveal a mini workshop for tinkering on boards. Even smaller is the pint-sized halfpipe for Tech Decks. The high roof kit opens up to reveal more storage for full-size boards while a rack on the xB’s tailgate holds two additional boards.

The Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show holds a very special place in our hearts, largely because it’s a different take on what an auto show traditionally is. Instead of debuting production cars or unveiling concept cars, SEMA is the place where automakers show off customized versions of their respective production models. This year, Scion was one of the first to unveil its SEMA plans when it released the first details on its SEMA-bound models, including the Slayer-inspired "Mobile Amp" tC sports coupe.
The Slayer Mobile Amp tC is far from a sheep wearing wolf’s clothing. It’s an all-out assault to your senses, a living (albeit on four wheels) embodiment of Slayer’s aggressive and style of music. The exterior and interior of the tC sports coupe received equal amounts of details attributed to Slayer as it was built by Mike Vu of MV DESIGNZ. This program isn’t for the weak of heart, as the company did not settle for anything less than to make Tom Araya and the rest of the band proud to have their names attached to it.

The second winner of this year’s Scion Tuner Challenge is Josh Croll from Mertztown, Pa. and the owner of Croll’s Customs. Just like the two other winners, he received a stock 2014 tC plus $15,000 to design and modify the car within 90 days. The model is now on display at the 2013 SEMA Show, next to all the other tuning kits from Scion.
Croll opted to design the only right-hand drive tC in the world. His car features a flashy hot-rod orange color, Croll also gave the timid tC an aggressive look by way of a set of wide wheels housed by a wide-body kit. In designing the car, Croll took inspiration from every aspect of the automotive lifestyle, given his goal was to create a vehicle loaded with everything you need to have fun, while remaining functional.
Croll started his work under the hood where he increased the output to 324 horsepower. To achieve this massive boost in power — up from the stock 179 horsepower — the tuner installed a Dezod Motorsports turbo kit with a Garrett turbocharger, replaced the manifold and the intercooler pipes, added a new 2.5-inch intake system and installed a new DEI titanium exhaust system.

A while ago, Scion announced its usual "Tuner Challenge" competition for the upcoming 2013 SEMA Show. From all the entries the tuner had to select only three winners and each of them received a stock 2014 tC plus $15,000 to design and modify the car within 90 days.
One of these modified cars will be a tC designed and modified by Young Tea, from Alhambra, Calif. His car was built in his personal garage and is suitable both for the track and daily driving.
His “Simpli-tC” concept took a base Scion tC and added an aggressive exterior kit that includes new fenders, a custom dual-outlet exhaust rear diffuser and many more, but it also lowered the car’s ride for a more aggressive look.
He did lots of work under the hood too, but up to this point the specifications figures have been kept a secret. However, we are pretty sure that his car will deliver more than the standard 180 horsepower.

It looks like the Scion FR-S will be one of the major stars at this year’s SEMA Show. Scion prepared no less than four concept cars based on the FR-S, and we are pretty sure we will see more than these in Las Vegas.
One of the four concepts was designed in cooperation with Bulletproof Automotive and transforms the obedient FR-S into a 500-horsepower beast with an exterior paint conversion inspired by Lamborghini.
A base FR-S delivers only 200 horsepower, so you can imagine that taking it up to 500 horsepower required lots of work. To achieve this massive number, Bulletproof installed a new, Powerhouse Amuse turbo kit with a EFR 6758 turbocharger, new titanium turbo downpipe and front pipe, 86.5 mm overbore pistons, upgraded rods and ACL bearings. There is also a new Amuse Titan Extra STTI exhaust system. The concept can run on both 91 octane and E85 fuels.

The Scion FR-S holds a special place in our hearts as part of a trinity of sports cars that have taken the world by storm.
In probably one of the most understated statements of the year, we’re not the only ones who love the FR-S. Apparently, world renowned DJ and producer Steve Aoki is himself quite a fan of the FR-S, so much so that a specially-modded version of the Japanese sports car is coming to the 2013 SEMA Auto Show packed with a host of features that can only come from the genius mind of Aoki.
The car itself is called the FR-S Steve Aoki Art Car, although what kind of interpretation you have for ’art’ is valid for interpretation. In this case, Aoki went balls to the wall on the interior, dressing up the FR-S’ cabin with a steady mix of high-grade audio components that essentially turns the FR-S’ interior into a veritable — and portable — club.
A host of sound system products from Pioneer were installed with multiple component speaker packages. Custom components from MV Designz were also designed and fabricated to use with all that explosion of audio technica. And just to keep the club vibe going, the FR-S’ interior somehow also found room for strobe lighting, a deck lid-mounted LCD display and a fog machine.
By the way, don’t sleep on the FR-S’ exterior package, because the combination of that five-piece aerodynamic kit and the custom graphics (the blue and orange trims on the black body look absolutely stunning) makes for a really attractive piece of eye candy.

Is it possible that the positively incredible-looking Scion FR-S could look even better when given proper aesthetic and aerodynamic enhancements?
Somehow, Scion was able to accomplish that with the FR-S Urban GT Sport Concept. Set to make its debut at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show, the FR-S Urban GT Sport Concept, or as its known in shorthand, "Style J", takes the reigns of the standard FR-S and turns it into a more menacing and downright scary sports car.
Scion describes the project as a "futuristic urban design" of the FR-S that not only incorporates a more luxurious feel to it, but also comes with a rash of technological upgrades that would fit right in with its rather furious looks.
The modifications left the FR-S with a host of new components, including a revised front profile that features a new grille configuration, new front bumpers, new fenders, and most noticeable of all, a sharper-looking headlight configuration.
The rear end also received a more polished look, with the rear bumpers designed more ergonomically than the standard FR-S. The rear diffuser also appears to be bigger with the wheel arches extended a little further to create a more staunch look for the FR-S.
The reworked FR-S also gets the benefit of having a set of 19-inch wheels in its portfolio, courtesy of HRE Performance. The suspension was likewise taken care of by Bilstein, while the ADVICS took on the brakes, installing its Big Brake System to complement all the suspension and wheels upgrades.
Judging from the specs that Scion unveiled, it appears that the Urban GT Sport Coupe received a subtle performance upgrade with output now reaching 216 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, a slight increase from the 200-horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque figures from the standard R-S.

We’ve seen GReddy Racing do some pretty gnarly things on the Scion FR-S, and just when it seemed that we’d had enough of them, the aftermarket company is coming to the 2013 SEMA Auto Show with another heavily-modded FR-S.
This time, the official billing of this model is the FR-S Racing Drift and just like GReddy’s previous FR-S projects, this one comes with a ton of upgrades, highlighted by a GReddy turbocharged 2JZ-GTE engine. With that engine firmly installed on the FR-S, the Japanese sports coupe now boasts of a staggering output of 750 horsepower and 730 pound-feet of torque, a ridiculous number considering that the standard FR-S only has 200 ponies and 151 pound-feet of torque on tap.
But that’s how GReddy Racing rolls and if the massive performance upgrade isn’t enough to tickle your fancy, the program also has a Rocket Bunny Ver.2 aerodynamic kit to go with a new set of 19-inch Rays Gram Lights 57FXX wheels, Wilwood brakes, and a KW Competition three-way suspension setup with SPL Parts Arms.
The interior didn’t receive a whole lot of upgrades, at least unless you condor FIA racing seats and a Takata Racing Race 6 SFI harness as a "lot".

The SEMA Auto Show has come and gone, yet some aftermarket companies are still in the process of unveiling their project cars on the Web. One of these companies is Vivid Racing who has finally released details on its SEMA Scion FR-S project car.
We don’t mind getting information about this car so late because it’s pretty sick to begin with and proves that some things really are worth the wait. For this program, Vivid Racing took the task of giving the FR-S a far more aggressive look and it accomplished that by first giving the sports coupe an INGs aero kit. The kit includes a new front bumper, side skirts, rear spats, and a carbon fiber GT wing which makes the FR-S look like a bonafide road warrior.
A new carbon fiber hood and a carbon fiber trunk were also added and come courtesy of Seibon. With these new materials in tow, the FR-S already weighs 40 lbs less than its standard trim. Add the carbon mirror covers and carbon fender inserts from Agency Power, two sets of 19-inch Niche Wheels — the driver side features a tinted brushed and gold multi-spoke with polished lip design, and the passenger side features a matte black thick 5-spoke design with a dark smoke brushed lip — wrapped in Toyo tires and a set of upgraded Brembo GT brakes, and you have the full breadth of Vivid Racing’s exterior package for the FR-S.
Meanwhile, the interior of the car received its share of upgrades, too. Ring GT-X carbon fiber bucket seats in black ultra-suede with red stitching and 5-point, red, FIA-approved harnesses all come by way of Status Racing. Agency Power also supplied a bolt-in harness bar and a billet shift knob to round out the interior package.
Last but certainly not least are the engine upgrades. Though no official numbers were given, Vivid Racing, together with Agency Power, really went to town in giving the FR-S improved power, highlighted by adding updated versions of the sports car’s headers, overpipe, and cutback. They also installed a short ram Agency Power intake kit and a lightweight aluminum crank pulley, as well as dual 4.5" titanium exhaust tips. To help keep the power under control, a large sway bar on the rear, full CNC-machined adjustable control arms, and sway bar links were installed.
Okay, we all pretty much figured that the BRZ and FR-S would likely have a strong presence in SEMA this year, as it was only one of the most talked about cars all year. To boot, with Toyota and Subaru dragging their collective feet about releasing higher-performance models, aftermarket companies have been working double-time to develop performance parts to hop up its 200-horsepower 4-banger engine.
Our colleagues over at Rides magazine managed to compile a gallery chock-full of just about every BRZ and FR-S at SEMA. We’re not too sure if this is a complete list of the examples at SEMA, but the total count in the gallery is 50 different examples – all but one or two are of the FR-S. We’re not too sure exactly how many cars showed up for SEMA this year, but we can say with some confidence that the FR-S takes the trophy for most heavily represented at the show.

The Scion FR-S has stolen the show at SEMA and not just because the company set up a tuning challenge for three companies to compete in. It looks like most of the tuning packages seen in Las Vegas were based on the tiny sports coupe, with some of the most impressive ones being the FR-S GT by Daniel Song and the FR-S Evasive Motorsports.
Along with the other tuning packages released, Ken Stout Racing (KSR) has unveiled the FR-S Pirelli World Challenge Race Car that will be raced in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class starting March 2013. Their FR-S has been fully equipped for the race track, receiving a full roll cage, a five-point safety harness, an OMP flat-bottom steering wheel, and a Racetech racing seat. The car sits on a new set of 18" wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires and features a huge APR carbon-fiber wing that helps improve aerodynamics.
Under the hood, the car’s standard boxer engine has received a TRD supercharger, a C&R radiator, and JE forged pistons. Other additions include a new Vertex exhaust system, a new suspension, and new racing brakes.
Known mostly for their works on promulgating the hip-hop, break dancing, and graffiti scenes in San Francisco, Fatlace has evolved into acompany that’s also dug in deep in the aftermarket auto industry. At SEMA, they took a project Scion FR-S that they’ve been working on for quite some time, back when it was completely bone stock, and turned it into a stunning sports car with some of the zaniest aftermarket work.
The objective for Fatlace was to build a car that would showcase the right combination of aftermarket offerings into one exciting sports car. The first order of business, apart from disassembling the FR-S, was to give it a new aero kit, which they did by way of Rocket Bunny. With the new Rocket Bunny kit, Fatlace managed to channel the FR-S’ aggressiveness and added bolt-on fenders, a redesigned front and rear bumper, and a new rear diffuser. Lightwerkz LED headlights were also part of the package, as were the new set of Limited TE37SL wheels in gunmetal grey wrapped in Toyo Proxes RS1 tires and complemented by Brembo Gran Turismo front and rear brakes.
Inside, Fatlace kept the modifications at a minimum, opting only to install a pair of their Illest x Bride Zieg III Type R carbon fiber - and FIA-approved - bucket seats. These seats come with Bride’s Low Max seating position, enhancing the view of the road for the driver. Takata Racing’s new harness system, in black with Takata Green accents, was also installed, to keep the driver in their seats when things get a little hairy.
It’s no secret that the FR-S isn’t exactly a powerhouse on wheels. So to give the car an added roar, Fatlace installed Vortex’s new bolt-on supercharger system to go with a Koyo radiator to help keep the engine’s mechanics cool. A Cusco power brace was also installed, as well as a new stainless steel dual exhaust system from Greddy that gave the FR-S the kind of deep growl it deserves.
It seems as if SEMA just kicked off with Scion announcing its $15,000 FR-S build-off challenge and we are already set to announce its winner. The three entrants in this contest were the FR-S GT by David Song, the FR-S “Carbon Stealth” by John Toca, and the FR-S “minty FReSh” by Chris Basselgia. All three competitors came to the table with stout rides and did a fair amount with the $10K that Scion gave each of them, but there could only be one winner.
Daniel Song’s FR-S GT was pretty sweet, but we think it ultimately failed due to the fact that it was a little to, shall we say, “Ricey” for the true enthusiast. We’re sure it performs admirably, but the massive wing on the back and matte black paint just screams “circa 1996 Civic DX ‘racecar.’” John Toca’s project was definitely up there, but he ultimately skimped out a little bit on the engine, resorting to an air-to-air intercooler and a cat-back exhaust system. On the inside and outside, however, Toca’s creation was gorgeous.
This leaves just one car left as the winner and that is good old “minty FReSh” by Chris Basselgia. Chris installed a smooth exterior package and covered it in an awesome paint color, then tinkered just a little bit with the audio system. Inside, Chris made some mild styling changes to set off the FR-S, like distressed leather, leather-trimmed floor mats, and a wood-grain steering wheel. Where we think Chris really made his victory a sure thing is under the skin of the FR-S.
As with all of the other competitors, Chris installed a supercharger, but he took great care in making sure that forced air remained cool, by installing a water-to-air intercooler and a heat exchanger. On top of that, he also fitted it with a CNC-milled intake manifold upgraded the cooling system, installed a full exhaust system, added in an air-ride system and upgraded the brakes. He really stretched that $10K a long way and came out with an extra $15K in prize money in his pocket.
Congrats, Chris. Hopefully Scion lets you keep the FR-S you built, but we doubt it.

US tuner Evasive Motorsports has built a reputation as one of the most dynamic auto tuners in the country and they’ve accomplished that by doing things their way. Whereas other tuners prefer the tried-and-tested method of slapping as much horsepower in a car as it can take, Evasive has adhered to the Japanese way of aftermarket customization, one where overall balance is the most important thing.
We bring this up because Evasive Motorsports is coming to the 2012 SEMA Auto Show with a custom-tuned version of the Scion FR-S and it looks deliriously stunning.
So stunning, in fact, that it hurts to think that we probably wouldn’t see this car outside SEMA. We could be wrong, and we certainly hope we are, but for now, we’re going to enjoy this finely-tuned FR-S at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show. If there’s one thing this race-spec sports car has shown us, it’s that Scion and Evasive Motorsports make for a pretty darn good team.

The second entry in Scion’s FR-S tuner competition, which competitors have $15K to build the most bad-ass FR-S for a change to win $10K, is Chris Basselgia’s entrant “minty FReSh” – you see what he did there? This custom FR-S creation, much like the “Carbon Stealth” before it, takes a much calmer approach to tuning.
Much like his competitor, John Toca, Basselgia left off all of the gaudy bodywork and focused mainly on a clean design. That’s not to say that his “minty FReSh” concept is free of any additions to the body, he was simply more careful and calculated with where he placed them. This ultimately brings the focus to the performance interior styling and sound system in the “minty Fresh” FR-S.
So, is Chris’ “minty Fresh” Scion FR-S up to the challenge of beating out its other two competitors and taking home the top prize of $10K?
