For all of the press and hype surrounding the Toyota GT 86 and the Subaru BRZ, not a lot of people know or have given love to the third model of the bunch, the Scion FR-S.
All that’s about to change because the Scion FR-S has arrived. For those that have shed rivers of tears when they found out that neither the GT 86 nor the BRZ were headed Stateside, news that the FR-S will arrive in America is tantamount to a post Thanksgiving blessing.
Now, we’ve actually seen a concept version of the FR-S - called the FR-S Concept - at the New York Auto Show, so it really didn’t come as a surprise to a lot of us that the sports coupe was coming to the US, but seeing the concept and seeing the production version are two different things.
It doesn’t even matter that we’re not getting the GT 86 and the BRZ. We have the FR-S, and just like a child that comes to us, we’re going to shower it with as much love as we can possibly give.
Updated 05/15/2015: Scion today announced prices and updates for the 2015 FR-S sports car set to go on sale just in time for summer. Updates for the 2015 model year include: a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning of the rear shock absorbers, larger exhaust tips and for the interior an updated panel with a carbon fiber look. The model will also get auto on/off headlights. Prices for the 2015 FR-S will start from $24,900 for the six-speed manual version and $26,000 for the six-speed automatic one.

The Tokyo Motor Show has been full of excitement and interesting new designs, but one bit of bad news has surfaced: Subaru’s brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga dismissed the idea of a convertible Subaru BRZ.
[Automotive News] has reported that Yoshinaga wasn’t too fond of Toyota’s drop-top concept displayed at Tokyo, saying his engineers believe the chassis would require a complete redesign in order to safely create a convertible BRZ.
Unfortunately, the lack of Yoshinaga’s blessing spells doom for Toyota’s attempts at building the car even without Subaru. Yoshinaga is also president of Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company that owns Subaru and manufacturer of both the BRZ and FR-S. “We make the car, so if we don’t make it, it can’t happen,” says Yoshinaga.
With that sort of nail in the coffin, it seems unlikely a convertible FR-S or BRZ will ever appear – at least in the car’s current generation. Perhaps when the car’s second generation rolls out, Fuji Heavy Industries will have accounted for the heavy interest in the roadster. Yoshinaga himself knows the market is ripe for the car, "I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car," he said. "But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. There are big technical difficulties."
Perhaps a bigger issue of concern is the apparent inter-company quarreling happening over the convertible idea. Toyota, the company responsible for the overall design of the BRZ/FR-S cars, seems adamant about the idea and has toted several convertible FR-S concepts around to other car show around the world, while the President of the manufacturing company and brand chief of Subaru, responsible for the powertrain and underpinnings of the cars, is dead set against it. Such an open and publicly played out situation cannot be good for future product development.
Lets just keep our fingers crossed that Toyota’s desire for a chopped-top FR-S doesn’t put the entire FT-86 project on the chopping block.

Gotta love those leaked documents! Whether this document was actually leaked by a stealth insider or Toyota is trying to get ahead of Subaru in the FT-86 game, the new Toyota FT-86’s (or Scion FR-S as it will be sold in the US market) specifications have been secretly released to the world. This comes about two months ahead of the official Subaru and Toyota/Scion debuts in December at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The new FT-86 will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a total output of 197 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 6,600 rpm, as well as a fuel economy of 31.52 mpg. The numbers are a bit disappointing, but what’s impressive is the car’s total weight: only 2,662 lbs.
The FT-86/FRS will be offered in two versions: High Spec and Low Spec. The top version has front LED lights, a leather steering wheel, 6 audio speakers (low spec has 2 speakers), a white rev counter with shift light, and sport pedals. The High Spec model also has "smart entry and start" and 17" wheels. The Low spec model gets 16" wheels.
