A powerful car for the masses of China

Skoda recently launched the Kodiaq GT and announced that it is destined to serve as the automaker’s flagship product on the Chinese market. With a "GT" badge, one would assume that the Kodiaq GT would be about extreme performance but, in its best form, it pumps out just 217 horsepower. It does feature some enhancements inside, though, so at least it has that going for it. All four Skoda products currently offered in China are SUVs – the Kamiq, Karoq, Kodiaq, and Kodiaq GT.

Dr. Ralf Hanschen, President of Skoda China, said: "The Skoda Kodiaq GT is an important milestone in Skoda China strategy. Being the first coupe SUV in our model range specifically designed for the Chinese market. We are confident that this sporty and stylish Skoda model will appeal to new customer groups and provide an even more impressive driving experience for our customers in China."

The Kodiaq GT is largely based on the standard Kodiaq, apart from a few changes on the body.

In the front, it is characterized by a fairly wider bonnet and a split, 12-slat, blackframed grille with chrome-plated dual ribs.

The LED headlights and LED daytime running lights are housed in the same unit, with fog-lamps placed much higher than the conventional setting. A little lower is the three-dimensional bumper and a front spoiler as well, with wide air inlets to make it look aggressive.

From the side, you’ll realize how steep the roofline slopes at the back. In fact, it’s so steep that it falters with the headroom inside. A prominent crease runs from the headlight to the taillight, and the side skirts are dressed in black plastic that don’t just break the monotony, but are also practical in case of some mild off-roading. The roofline merges with the flat tailgate well, giving the Kodiaq GT a dynamic profile. Wheel arches are square-ish and the tires fill the wheel wells nicely.

Move to the rear, and you’ll notice the sharp LED taillights, which gives the SUV a dynamic profile.

The rear is a typical Skoda, with sharp cuts and creases, and a bold, in-your-face look. The tailgate gets a cut in between, looking like an arrow, with SKODA branding embossed in individual letters. A reflective tape runs down the loading sill along the entire width. This is accentuated at the bottom as well, with the black diffuser.

Step inside the cabin, and you’ll be welcomed to a familiar, yet distinct layout.

The seats have extra bolstering on the side to keep you planted when the car is flying around corners.

The waterfall center console is ergonomically perfect with all knobs and buttons falling into hand perfectly. When seen from the side, there is a gap to slide in the knick-knacks. This is bound to remind you of Volvo’s design styling. The ‘Virtual Cockpit’ is highly customizable as per your needs and, in terms of connectivity, the Kodiaq GT comes standard with Wi-Fi access, Apple CarPlay, and Mirrorlink, among a host of other features.

To quote the company, "in the interior, the eye is immediately drawn to the high-quality materials and fully customizable Virtual Cockpit, which comes as standard. As is typical for Skoda, there are numerous practical ‘Simply Clever’ ideas. With Wi-Fi access and MirrorLink™, Apple CarPlay and Baidu’s Carlife, the Kodiaq GT is always online and at the cutting edge of connectivity."

This is where the ‘GT’ tag gets justified.

This SUV comes with a 2.0-liter TSI petrol engine that produces 184 horses.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. The same engine is available in a slightly powerful avatar that produces 217 horses and sends power to all the four wheels through the same seven-speed transmission. In terms of safety, the Kodiaq GT is well-equipped with features like Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-go functionality, Front Assist, etc.

2019 Skoda Kodiaq GT Pricing

There is no announcement on pricing yet, but expect it to be about $4,000-$5,000 ( 28,000-35,000 Yuan) more expensive than the regular Kodiaq. The car will be launched at the Guangzhou Motor Show, which takes place between 16 and 25 November 2018.

Final Thoughts

The Kodiaq GT is a very important product for Skoda in the People’s Republic of China. It’s the Czech manufacturer’s flagship product, plus it’s exclusive to the country. Dimension-wise, the car is the same as the Kodiaq, but it’s more powerful and has a sportier interior as well. There will be a majority of people who will go for the Kodiaq GT instead of the Kodiaq; which was their first preference. So, a part of the sales that the manufacturer is getting from the Kodiaq GT is essentially from people who were already buying a car from Skoda. If seen from this perspective, the GT needs to eat up sales from other automakers, and not split and share with the Kodiaq.

  • Leave it
    • More like a variant of the existing Kodiaq
    • An exclusive-China product makes it seem like an experimental rat
    • The bold styling may not appeal to everyone

ŠKODA presents new flagship in China with the KODIAQ GT
› Coupé version of the ŠKODA KODIAQ exclusively for China
› Robust appearance and dynamic lines characterize ŠKODA’s first SUV coupé
› Numerous assistance systems, virtual cockpit and state-of-the-art connectivity on board
Mladá Boleslav, 17 October 2018 – The ŠKODA KODIAQ GT is the Czech brand’s new top
model in China. ŠKODA’s first SUV coupé, intended exclusively for the Chinese market, is
the next milestone in the Czech manufacturer’s SUV campaign. With its strong, dynamic
presence and state-of-the-art connectivity, the KODIAQ GT is the new standard bearer in
ŠKODA’s most important sales market. China will be the only market in the world where
ŠKODA offers a total of four SUV models: KAMIQ, KAROQ, KODIAQ and KODIAQ GT.
For the first time in the SUV segment, ŠKODA is offering a vehicle that combines the robustness
and versatility of an SUV with the sporty elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the KODIAQ GT,
appealing to new, lifestyle-oriented consumer groups. The new KODIAQ GT celebrates its official
premiere in China at the Guangzhou Motor Show, which takes place from 16 to 25 November 2018.
Dr. Ralf Hanschen, President of ŠKODA China, says: "The ŠKODA KODIAQ GT is an important
milestone in ŠKODA’s China strategy. Being the first coupé SUV in our model range specifically
designed for the Chinese market. We are confident that this sporty and stylish ŠKODA model will
appeal to new customer groups and provide an even more impressive driving experience for our
customers in China."
The front of the 4.63-metre-long ŠKODA KODIAQ GT is characterized by a wide bonnet and blackframed
grille with chrome-plated dual ribs. The LED headlights, three-dimensional bumper and front
spoiler with wide air inlets reinforce its powerful appearance. The roofline gently sloping behind the
front doors merging into the flat tailgate gives the KODIAQ GT a dynamic profile. Powerful wheel
arches and chiselled side skirts in the body colour with matte black elements also add to the
robustness of the coupé version of this large SUV.
The rear end features sharply drawn LED taillights with crystalline shapes and ŠKODA’s
characteristic design. A fine reflective tape runs down the loading sill along the entire width of the
vehicle and creates further accents alongside the black diffuser. In a display of confidence, this is
the first ŠKODA production model in China to bear the brand lettering in individual letters in the
centre of the tailgate.
The interior of the new KODIAQ GT is also sporty and stylish, combining the space typical of SUVs
with the emotive lines of a coupé. In the interior, the eye is immediately drawn to the high-quality
materials and fully customizable Virtual Cockpit, which comes as standard. As is typical for ŠKODA,
there are numerous practical ‘Simply Clever’ ideas. With Wi-Fi access and MirrorLink™, Apple
CarPlay and Baidu’s Carlife, the KODIAQ GT is always online and at the cutting edge of
connectivity.
The range of drivetrains for the KODIAQ GT includes two efficient engines: a 2.0 TSI with 137 kW
(186 hp) drives the front wheels; the 2.0 TSI with 162 kW (220 hp) comes standard with all-wheel

drive and a 7- speed DSG. Numerous assistance systems including Blind Spot Detect, Front Assist

SUV models in particular play an important role in ŠKODA’s growth plans in China. In 2007, the
Czech car manufacturer returned to the Chinese market, which became the brand’s largest sales
market in 2010. In 2017, ŠKODA delivered 325,000 vehicles in China – one in every four ŠKODA’s
delivered worldwide last year. According to a five-year plan, laid out in a Memorandum of
Understanding signed in 2016 during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Czech
Republic, more than two billion euros will be invested in the expansion of the SUV portfolio and the
development of alternative-drive ŠKODA vehicles.
