Spyker->ke84 has unveiled the C8 Aileron Spyder in 2009 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. However, until now there is not even a single unit on the streets. However, while people are waiting to actually see this car, Dutch CEO Victor Muller announced it will be built only as a limited edition. Only 99 people will actually have the chance to drive this car. The only question is "When?" Spyker announced at the official launch in 2009 that the C8 Aileron Spyder will go into production in the first half of 2010, and now is the first half of 2011 and they still do not have a production version ready. So we guess the crisis is really holding them back!

Another news is that instead of being offered with the same Audi sourced 4.2 Liter V8 as the coupe version, the Spyder version will be powered by a V8 Corvette ZR1 engine.

The exterior and the interior

As with the coupe version, the Spyder is inspired by Spyker’s aviation heritage. The Aileron was named after the flaps on the wings that are used to control the plane’s rolling and banking movements. The Spyder version gets a high-quality, semi-automatic canvas soft-top. The roof’s operation is electric/hydraulic, secured by one central latch operated manually. The soft top has a glass rear window and will be offered in eight colors.

The C8 Aileron Spyder will be offered with a turned aluminum dashboard fascia, 19-inch directional rotor wheels, branded Rotorblade™, quilted leather detailing for the cockpit and Chrono-swiss dashboard instruments. Customers may also order a 5-piece Louis Vuitton luggage set exclusively made for Spyker.

The engine

The coupe version is offered with an Audi sourced 4.2 liter V8 engine, that delivers a total of 400 HP and with a choice of two transmission alternatives: a 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox, withratios perfectly matched to the V8 engine and a ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox as an option.

However, for the Spyder version things will be a little bit different. Dutch CEO Victor Muller recently announced that the Spyder version will be offered with a V8 engine, but this time taken from a Corvette ZR1. In the American model, the engine delivers an impressive 638 HP and 604 lb.-ft. of torque. That will give a difference of more than 230 HP between the Aileron coupe and Spyder model.

The competition

The Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder takes on models like Audi R8 Spyder, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, and for sure until Spyker will actually put it on sale we will also have a Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder.

Priced from $161,000 the R8 Spyder is powered by a 4,2 liter V8 engine that delivers a total of 430 hp at 7,900 rpm and 430 NM between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm and sprints the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 185 mph. Like with the coupe version, the 458 Italia Spyder will be powered by a 4.5 Liter V8 engine equipped with the traditional Ferrari flat crankshaft that produces 570 HP at a rather lofty 9000 RPM.

The price

Syker did not announced a price for the Spyder model just yet. However, they did confirmed there will only be 99 units produced. Just for comparison, the coupe version is priced at 199.990 euro (ro $267,000 at the current exchange rates).
