Subaru WRX, BRZ, Levorg Receive The (Aesthetic) Magic Of STI
2022 Subaru Levorg STI Sport R Is The WRX Wagon America Needs
The Subaru WRX’s launch was controversial, to say the least. It was mostly driven by the fact that the sports sedan looks like a crossover, no thanks to its sheer amount of body cladding. But what if you want a WRX, but in a body style that enthusiasts actually want, and with a design that’s arguably more attractive? Say hello to the Subaru Levorg STI Sport R.
Thanks to the 2021 Subaru Levorg Wagon, We Know What the New WRX Will Look Like
If the Subaru Levorg doesn’t trigger the neurotransmitters and tickle the temporal lobe in your brain, I’m honestly not too surprise. The Subaru Levorg is mainly a Japanese-only affair with Australia and a handful of European countries getting their hand’s on it only recently, after some 4-5 years on the market. As a wagon, it’s not surprising that Subaru hasn’t brought it to the U.S., but it’s still largely relevant here for one major reason – it has historically shared a lot of DNA with the Subaru WRX. The car that you see here is the second-gen, 2021 Subaru Levorg, which means that we’re getting our first real look at what the next-gen WRX and WRX STI are going to look like here in the United States. Pretty cool, right?
2019 Subaru Levorg Prototype
Subaru has pulled the covers off the all-new Levorg wagon, ushering in the second-generation version of what has become one of the most popular wagons in Japan. The Subaru Levorg Prototype isn’t the final production model. It is, as Subaru deftly calls it, a near-production “prototype” of the second-generation wagon that will arrive in the Japanese market in the second half of 2020. The Levorg isn’t going to the U.S. market, but some of the new and updated technologies that are being showcased by the prototype in Tokyo will find their way to America in some form or fashion. In the absence of the actual wagon heading Stateside, we’ll take our victories where we can get them.
2017 Subaru Levorg STI
Fans of the Subaru WRX hatchback weren’t exactly happy when Subaru announced that the new WRX would only come to the U.S. as a sedan. Then Subaru announced the 2015 Subaru Levorg, which was essentially a WRX wagon and one of the best-looking Subies in a long, long time. It, of course, was another forbidden fruit for those of us in the U.S. Now, Subaru is sticking it to U.S. Subie fans one more time with the Subaru Levorg STI – a model based on the Levorg S concept that debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2015.
So far we don’t know a whole lot about the new Levorg STI, but Subaru has released a couple of images and a couple of videos to tease us before is debut this summer. At this point, we’re not sure if the Levorg STI will make it anywhere outside of the Japanese market, but considering the standard Levorg hasn’t traveled this far, it’s not likely the Levorg STI will either. So, don’t get your hopes up of ever seeing one on U.S. shores anytime soon.
Even though we have very little official information to go by right now, we can look back on the Levorg S concept to get an idea of what the Levorg will be like with the full STI treatment. So, with that said, let’s dive on in a speculate a little on what is bound to be Japan’s hottest wagon come summer of 2016.
