Thanks to the 2021 Subaru Levorg Wagon, We Know What the New WRX Will Look Like
If the Subaru Levorg doesn’t trigger the neurotransmitters and tickle the temporal lobe in your brain, I’m honestly not too surprise. The Subaru Levorg is mainly a Japanese-only affair with Australia and a handful of European countries getting their hand’s on it only recently, after some 4-5 years on the market. As a wagon, it’s not surprising that Subaru hasn’t brought it to the U.S., but it’s still largely relevant here for one major reason – it has historically shared a lot of DNA with the Subaru WRX. The car that you see here is the second-gen, 2021 Subaru Levorg, which means that we’re getting our first real look at what the next-gen WRX and WRX STI are going to look like here in the United States. Pretty cool, right?
2021 Subaru Crosstrek
The Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most underrated crossovers available in the market today. It is one of the best-selling Subarus in the States, but not the breadwinner for the Japanese automaker. The crossover has been lauded for its excellent overall value for money, hatch-like driving experience, and versatility. It is essentially an Impreza with an off-road bias.
The company introduced the second-gen of the crossover in 2018, and for the 2021 model, Subaru has refreshed the car. It comes with a few aesthetic changes, a new mill under the hood, and a new trim. Will this help boost the Crosstrek’s sales?
Why Isn’t Subaru Bringing Back the Hatchback...Yet
However you cut it, the only genuine hatchback within the Subaru line of cars was the third generation Subaru Impreza hatch. True, the company did make odd-shaped, wagon-like hatchbacks on top of the Impreza chassis since the very beginning in 1992, but none of them had that proper hatchback quality. It is the same story today. If you walk in a Subaru showroom, you can have an Impreza hatch that looks like a wagon. Alternatively, you can have an Outback - a five-door wagon, based on the Legacy, with raised suspension and body claddings. In short, the company has no hatch to fight the likes of the Golf, Focus, Fiesta, Polo, or Yaris, among others! Nevertheless, the question remains - can we expect the new Subaru hatch?

Subaru is one of the most revered names in rallying history and, along with archrival Mitsubishi, has been absent from top-level WRC competition for a decade. Now, however, Japanese sources point to a possible resurgence of the Subaru WRC program.
Subaru built its reputation in rallying over a relatively short period of time. the Subaru World Rally Team was formed in 1989 and was active for less than two decades from that point on. But, in those two decades, Subaru put forth some of the most amazing machines ever seen on the WRC scene and promoted some of the sport’s most beloved drivers with names like Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg immediately springing to mind.
Sadly, Subaru isn’t part of the WRC anymore, although a no-limit rally car based on the Impreza has been seen competing to this day, however, it’s mainly racing in Asia and the Rally U.S.A. series, not in Europe. This is all about to change if rumors regarding a return of the Subaru World Rally Team in 2020 turn out to be legitimate.
2019 Subaru WRX and WRX STI Series.Gray
Having just celebrated 50 years in the U.S. with a batch of limited-edition packages for eight different models at the Chicago Auto Show, Subaru unveiled two more special-edition versions of the WRX and WRX STI at the 2018 Subaru Tecnica International Boxerfest in Washington D.C.
Much like the 50th Anniversary Edition, the Series.Gray comes with a special exterior paint, a sportier interior, and extra standard equipment. Only 1,000 units of the Series.Gray cars will be produced, with 750 WRX and only 250 WRX STI models to leave the factory. Besides being produced in smaller numbers, the WRX STI also gets a revised chassis for a sportier ride. Let’s find out more about both cars in the review below.

Subaru Announces Bumped WRX Pricing for 2019 to Go with Extra Juice for the STI
It’s not very often we can start out talking about any car with the words “it comes standard with a manual transmission,” but that’s how we’re starting today. This is fantastic news, considering previous rumors suggested that Subaru would kill off the manual because Eyesight isn’t compatible. (180284) Back to the real reason we’re here, Subaru has confirmed what we told you back on April 13, 2019 – the 2019 WRX STI will get a minor bump in power. It’s just five horsepower, and Subbie went to a lot to make it happen, but it’s there. It also comes with a bump to pricing across the line.
I see a lot of the Subaru Crosstrek. After spending a week behind the wheel of one, I finally understand why they’re so numerous in my area despite the fact there’s no Subaru dealer nearby.
The Crosstrek proved itself equal parts practical, efficient, and rugged during my weeklong test drive. It’s fitting that Subaru does so much advertising targeted at dog owners. The Subaru Crosstrek was as lovable as a golden retriever, as ruggedly handsome as an Alaskan malamute, and as stoic as a Weimaraner in the face of difficult conditions.

2018 Subaru Forester 50th Anniversary Edition
Subaru used the 2018 Chicago Auto Show to launch special 50th Anniversary Edition models for each of its vehicles as a celebration of the five decades the Japanese automaker has been selling inside the U.S. While no mechanical upgrades are made, there are several visual changes that help distinguish the 50th Anniversary Editions from their standard counterparts.
These 50th Anniversary Editions are based on upper trim levels. For the 2018 Forrester, that means the Touring model – including both the 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder and the turbocharged 2.0-liter Boxer-four engine options. The Continuously Variable Transmission comes standard on the Touring trims, as does Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system with X-Mode and Hill Descent Control.

2018 Subaru Crosstrek 50th Anniversary Edition
Subaru is launching a 50th Anniversary Edition for each of its 2018 models, including the Crosstrek. No mechanical changes are included on the Anniversary Editions, but there are several key visual changes making the package worthwhile. Subaru is also limiting availability of the special edition.
The 50th Anniversary Edition is based on upper trim levels, which for the Crosstrek, means the 2.0i Limited. That means leather seats, the CVT, and Eyesight safety system comes standard. Like all 2018 Crosstreks, this model comes with Subaru’s 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder making 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Symmetrical AWD is standard, too, of course, and includes X-Mode and Hill Descent Control. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated at 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway with regular 87 octane gasoline.

2018 Subaru Impreza 50th Anniversary Edition
Unveiled for the 2017 model year, the current-generation Subaru Impreza received a significant makeover inside and out compared to the previous model, but old engine was carried over with mild revisions. Despite not being that much more powerful, the sedan gets a lot of praise for its comfortable and roomy cabin, the standard all-wheel-drive system, and the available safety features. For 2018, the Impreza continues without any changes — which isn’t surprising given that it’s still relatively new — but Subaru is offering a limited-edition, 50th Anniversary package.
The bundle is part of Subaru’s celebration of its 50th anniversary in the United States. Established in 1953, the Japanese firm crossed the pond to the U.S. in 1968, when Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm founded Subaru of America in Philadelphia and began selling the tiny 360 model. This limited-edition Impreza is part of a larger scale 50th Anniversary offensive that includes the entire U.S. lineup, minus the yet-to-be-available Ascent. Yes, you can have the package on the Legacy, Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, BRZ, and WRX too, but we’re going to focus on the Impreza in this article.

2018 Subaru BRZ 50th Anniversary Edition
While not as old as other Japanese carmakers like Toyota and Nissan, Subaru was one of the first companies from the country to open shop in the United States. It happened in 1968 when Malcolm Bricklin established Subaru of America in Philadelphia. Exactly 50 years have passed since them as of 2018, and Subaru is celebrating the event with a range of 50th Anniversary Edition models. The package is available across the entire U.S. lineup, including the BRZ sports car.
Limited to only a couple of hundred units, the BRZ 50th Anniversary Edition shares most of its special features with other vehicles included in this run. So it’s not exactly as exclusive as Subaru wants us to think. However, it has a range of cool features, including a new exterior color and new interior appointments. It’s also based on a higher-trim model, so it gets an extended range of standard equipment. Find out what it’s all about and how much it costs in the review below.

Subaru Celebrates 50 Years In The U.S. Market With Special Editions, But We’re Digging This 360 Instead
This year at the Chicago Auto Show, Subaru made its presence known with a long line of special edition models. There’s eight of them in total, encompassing almost every entry in Subaru’s stable, and each comes with special paint, satin chrome trim, and new aluminum wheels. All told, we think it’s a rather half-hearted batch of upgrades. Still, there was one car at the Subaru booth that definitely caught our eye – this 1968 Subaru 360. Rally Wheels And Knobby Rubber Make For Quite The Off-Road Package
based bones under the skin, standard symmetrical AWD system, copious rock-deflecting exterior trim, and sizable 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Subaru Crosstrek makes for a pretty decent choice when tackling the great outdoors. I mean, that’s kinda the whole point, right? Load up the capacious rear trunk with your lifestyle equipment of choice (mountain bike, camping gear, inflatable raft, etc.) then set out for the trail head. That’s all well and good, but whaddya need to take it even further? Well, a set of rally wheels and knobby rubber would certainly do the trick.
That’s exactly what the owner of this particular hatchback Scooby did, throwing on a set of what appears to be ten-spoke Method rally wheels wrapped in General Grabber all-terrain tires. It’s a pricey set-up, for sure, but we think it’s worth every penny. Not only that, but the combo looks fantastic on the Crosstrek, turning it from mall marauder to trail buster in an instant.
Get Ready To Wag Your Tail: The Barkleys Return In Subaru’s Latest Commercial
There are few things out there that are guaranteed advertising hits, but dogs seem to be one of the most universal. I mean, come on – not only are they adorable, but you can put ’em in just about any situation and they quickly become the center of attention. Anyone who’s been in a room with a new puppy will be able to attest to that.
With that in mind, it makes sense that Subaru is once again falling back on its tail-wagging, ball-chasing, slobbery-kiss roots with a fresh ad featuring our favorite canine family, the Barkleys. This time around, the puppers are working on their parallel parking skills in a new silver Impreza hatchback. Of course, getting it next to the curb can be a particularly tricky maneuver if you don’t have thumbs, but it’s even harder when you’re distracted by a pair of flying ducks overhead. Let’s just say things don’t go exactly as planned.

‘Tis The Season For Symmetrical AWD: Video
We just got a good amount of the white stuff up here in Northern California, which is well timed with the impending holiday season. But, as we all know, with the extra fluffy frozen water comes grip issues on the road, and that can be a problem if you’re on a deadline to deliver tons of toys to good little girls and boys all around the world. Luckily, it looks like Santa has the right stuff to make it there on time, as evidenced in the above commercial.
Rather than floating through the sky pulled by a herd of reindeer, we see Santa is actually powered by a Subaru Crosstrek, dashing through the snow thanks to high ground clearance and 152 horsepower laid down by a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine. And just in case that magical sack Santa uses to haul around all the goodies gets a little too full, the Crosstrek’s sizable rear cargo room should have the right stuff to bring the rest of it. All it needs now is a bright and shiny red grille on the nose…

So then, it’s Halloween. What’s your costume gonna be? Does it happen to be a blue and gold jump suit and helmet combo with the name “Solberg” or “McRae” printed across it? The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is Insanely Practical But Kinda Dull to Drive
This past week has seen Subaru’s all-new 2018 Crosstrek in my driveway. It’s the high-riding Impreza with more ground clearance than a Jeep Grand Cherokee (though only by 0.1 inches) and a Boxer engine under the hood. Now in its second generation, the 2018 Crosstrek rides on Subaru’s new Global Platform and is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat four-cylinder claimed to be 80 percent new. A new six-speed manual gearbox replaces the old five-speed and a Continuously Variable Transmission returns as the option. Both outside and in, the 2018 Crosstrek is highly improved and impressively capable at being a better crossover than most crossovers on the market. But as it turns out, the Crosstrek isn’t that fun to drive.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise when realizing the 2.0-liter Boxer only muster 152 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 145 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Despite the Crosstrek’s meager 3,300-pound curb weight, the naturally aspirated engine wheezes its way through the CVT’s seven artificial ratios. Despite being mostly new and now having direct fuel injection, the little flat-four is simply underpowered. The lack of power is exacerbated by the CVT’s smooth, long, boring “shifts” that prioritize fuel economy over all else. I desperately want to try the six-speed manual, but even that can’t rectify the missing horsepower.
What the Crosstrek needs is the WRX’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s good for 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Pair that with the WRX’s sweet six-speed manual gearbox, and you’d have a Crosstrek that’s ready for a WRC Rally. Subaru could brand it the Crosstrek STi and boom – an instant halo car. While the extra power wouldn’t help with fuel economy, the added “cool” factor would bring more people to the Crosstrek lineup, even if they weren’t buying the STi version. Halo models are proven to improve sales in lesser models.
Admittedly, the Crosstrek and its lackadaisical CVT really appealed to my wife. “I love the way it shifts,” she exclaimed the first time she rode in it. “You can’t feel it at all, and I really like that.” While she might be the Crosstrek’s target audience, it’s hard to ignore the missing performance version Subaru should deliver. Combine that power with its well-appointed and comfy interior with its vastly improved infotainment system, 55.3-cubic feet of cargo room, and extra inch of rear-seat legroom afforded by the new Global Platform, and Subaru would surely have a hit.
I truly admire the 2018 Crosstrek and have very few complaints beyond its powertrain, but boy, the potential this vehicle has is astounding. As for its driving experience and other notable features, I’ll have more on that in the coming days here on TopSpeed.
2020 Subaru Crosstrek XTI
As an older WRX fan, I lament the loss of the WRX hatch. More than that, I’m downright crestfallen over the loss of the WRX wagon. Once considered a bastion of speed and practicality, Subaru’s most famous performance machine is now no more than a be-winged four-door, downgraded from the glory of “yes please, more junk in the trunk” to “I’m not sure if it’ll fit.” However, if cargo room is what you’re after, then the Crosstrek looks like a decent solution, albeit a boring one. If we had our way, we wouldn’t have to choose – strap on a turbo, drop the CVT, and suddenly you’ve got the best of both worlds. Say hello to the Crosstrek XTI.
The name draws from the 2008 Forester XTI concept, which appeared at SEMA with the same 2.5-liter turbo boxer engine as the WRX STI, plus a six-speed manual transmission, 18-inch S204 wheels, high-performance Yokohama rubber, coilover suspension, big Brembo brakes, leather and Alcantara in the cabin, and a new cabin layout. Output clocked in at 315 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Sounds tasty, but unlikely, no? Not so fast. Subaru has already offered a more aggressive design study for the Crosstrek called the Subaru XV Sport Concept, introduced at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2013, bearing new styling, upgraded suspension, LED lights, STI tower bar, new aero enhancements, STI muffler, 17-inch Enkei wheels, Recaro seats, and Brembo brakes. So what if Subaru went whole hog on the performance crossover thing?

2018 Subaru WRX STI – Driven
Those television commercials say Subarus are made from love. That’s only the case if we’re talking about the love of motorsports and rally racing. See, generations of Subarus, most notably the Impreza WRX and WRX STI models, have taken home World Rally Championship trophies from events around the world. Thankfully, Subaru injects this racing pedigree into the production version of its WRX models, making them some of the best performing, all-weather and terrain racing machines on the planet. And now for 2018, the WRX and WRX STI receive a slight cosmetic refresh paired with a handful of mechanical upgrades.
I recently spent a few days with a 2018 WRX STI Limited painted in that lovely WR Blue Pearl hue. At first glance, the acid-green brake calipers and tall rear wing command the eye’s attention. But looking deeper, you’ll see the front grille is ever so slightly more aggressive than before. A new set of 19-inch, Y-spoke wheels are new, as are those bright brake calipers and the larger rotors they squeeze. Things inside change little, too, through the small changes make big improvements in comfort. A larger information screen atop the dash has new graphics, the StarLink Infotainment system now measures 7.0 inches, the rear seat gets a folding center armrest with cup holders, the door panels have new grab handles, and road noise is hushed thanks to thicker side glass and added insulation. Mechanically, Subaru gave the STI a new fully electronic center differential that’s said to work faster than the previous mechanical and electrical DCCD. Sadly, Subaru chose not to completely rework the WRX STI onto the Impreza’s new-for-2017 chassis. Even the 2.5-liter Boxer engine remains untouched at 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. But does this dull the rally-inspired driving experience. Hardly. Keep reading to find out more.
