6 American SUVs That Still Feature Body-on-Frame Construction
There once was a time when body-on-frame SUVs were common sights. But with the advent of unibody car-based bodies, we don’t see too many of the old body-on-frame SUVs anymore. There are still some SUVs in the market whose bodies and frames are two separate entities, so it’s not like you’re absent of any choices if this is the kind of SUV you want. The Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Wrangler, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Chevrolet Suburban are still considered body-on-frame SUVs, making them extremely useful in the outdoors. So what exactly do these six SUVs have to offer? Read on and find out.
The Worlds Best Super SUVs
The term “super SUV” is relatively new in the automotive lexicon, but its use has exploded in popularity with the rush of high-end models that have filled its ranks. From the Bentley Bentayga to the Lamborghini Urus, we’ve seen no shortage of super SUVs hit the market in recent years. Super SUVs are the most extravagant breed of SUVs you can find on the market. They have interiors that can rival those that are found in luxury cars, and they have performance capabilities that border on supercar levels. They also have premium price tags, something that we should expect given their status. This is our list of the best super SUVs in the market today, and, who knows, you might end up in the market for one sooner than you think.
2019 BMW X6
With the BMW X5 finally making its debut, it’s time to start thinking about the next-generation of the X6, a model that is essentially the X5 but with that coupe-style roof. With the current X6 being on the market for just three years, we probably won’t see the new X6 until at least 2020, but you can bet BMW is already hard at work. And, thanks to these new renderings that fuse the X6’s coupe-like styling with the look of the new X5, we have a strong visual representation of what we can expect.
Update 06/29/2018: A BMW X6 Prototype was caught testing for the first time. Check out our spy shots section below to learn all about it.
The Honda Pilot entered its third generation for the 2016 model year, and with it came a completely redesigned vehicle that dropped its boxy look, shed a few pounds, and inches closer to the premium segment as far as interior materials and overall fit and finish. On the outside, the front end is now sportier with thinner wraparound headlight units, a stylish front fascia, muscular hood, sculpted side profile, new taillight units, and a rear end that is far less boxy compared to the outgoing model. Inside, the cabin has been redesigned to provide a more premium feel, despite still be packed full of hard plastic trim. There is a new digital instrument cluster, and eight-inch touch screen display and extra passenger and cargo room compared to the previous model. Honda didn’t do too much to alter the Pilot’s drivetrain for the third-gen model, but it did update the 3.5-liter to include cylinder deactivation, a stop/start function, and a six-speed automatic transmission.
More importantly, however, is the fact that the 2016 Honda Pilot should be safer than the outgoing model, earning “good” ratings for moderate overlap frontal offset, small overlap frontal offset, side impact, and roof strength, which was an improvement over the previous gen model, which received a “poor” rating for small overlap frontal offset and a “marginal” rating for roof strength for the 2009 to 2011 model years. With models like the Toyota Highlander and Chevy Traverse already sporting a more modern design, the new Pilot finally has what it takes to compete in the Large SUV segment once again. With that said, take a look at our detailed review of the new 2016 Honda Pilot below.
Updated 06/28/2018: Honda has updated the 2019 Pilot with a revised exterior look, a revised nine-speed automatic transmission, Honda Safety Sense, and a decent list of optional equipment for the taking. Check out the details in our updated section below.
2018 Skoda Karoq
The Skoda Karoq isn’t as popular as models like the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson, but that could all change once people get to know this SUV and what it has to offer. Unlike some of its rivals, the Karoq can’t rely on its legacy because it doesn’t have one. What Skoda has done, though, is give the Karoq a good platform from which to stand on. It’s a well-packaged SUV that surprisingly has a lot to offer to customers in this segment. Most of all, the Karoq is proof that, even if Skoda isn’t as much of a household name as others, it has the ability to reach that level, thanks in large part to its new SUV.
2019 Volkswagen T-Cross
New spy shots of the Polo-based Volkswagen T-Cross are giving us a clear idea of what to expect when the smallest member of VW’s crossover family hits dealerships next year. The T-Cross was seen testing in and around the Nurburgring with heavy camouflage covering its front and rear sections. The crossover’s design elements are slowly unraveling, and from the looks of it, the T-Cross is going to be what we all thought it’d be. It’s a high-riding Volkswagen Polo with some design elements culled from its big brother, the T-Roc.
The Jeep Wrangler is All Set For Beach Patrolling in Italy!
FCA has given the Jeep Wrangler a new job this summer – to keep people safe at the beaches of Romagna, Italy as a beach patrol vehicle. The automaker has presented a custom Wrangler to the Italian ‘Carabinieri’, to patrol an 18-mile area of the Romagna Riviera that includes popular resorts. We’re pretty sure the ‘lifesaver’ will be a tourist attraction as well!
SUVs and trucks practically replaced sedans and wagons. Heck, they are so popular now that some manufacturers make three-door versions of SUVs, something that has never worked well. Nevertheless, this year has seen a fair share of SUV and truck releases, but as with everything else, some are more important than others. I present to you five best and most important truck and SUV debuts so far this year.

Bentley Bentayga smashes SUV record at Pikes Peak
Just a few weeks after the Bentley announced that it was working on a Bentayga Speed, the Bentayga is in the news again; this time for smashing the record for a production SUV at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Bentley has been on fire lately with the Bentayga, and it looks like the Bentayga is starting to show who the real monster is!
2019 Suzuki Jimny
Most Americans miss out on some really interesting things. Fine, missing out on Kinder eggs is one thing, but missing out on some amazing cars is where we should draw the line.
Take for example the Suzuki Jimny - a pocket-size off-roader capable of treading where only a few would dare. After three generations and more than 2.25 million units sold since 1970, Suzuki finally revealed the first official photos of the fourth generation Jimny.
And, that only happened after some customers captured photos of the new Jimny at a Suzuki private event and published them online. An official live presentation is scheduled for the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October.
Wallpaper of the day: 2016 Volvo XC60
As the largest model of Volvo’s 60 Series of vehicles, the XC60 has big shoes to fill. Even bigger than ever before now that SUVs and Crossovers are just so popular. And, that’s exactly why Volvo decided to completely revamp the XC60 for the 2018 model year. It hit the market with more technology than ever, a plush interior equal to that of cars that sit well above it, tons of power (up to 407 horsepower in the right configuration,) and an exterior design that is to die for. It has now been joined by the 2019 Volvo V60 Wagon and the recently-debuted (as in this week) Volvo S60 sedan. And, with these two cars now gracing our lives, we thought it would be nice to honor the biggest model of the 60 Series by making the XC60 our wallpaper of the day.
