Veterans Day is a big deal because it gives Americans a chance to pay homage to all the men and women in the military who protect this beautiful country. American automakers usually play their own part in commemorating this day and this year, California-based Tesla Motors->ke1842 is front and center with the unveiling of the one-off Model S P85 Veterans Edition. The special edition->ke2041 Model S Veterans Edition is the latest example of the automaker’s commitment to honoring the military and its veterans. It’s also proof that Tesla->ke1842 takes this responsibility very seriously.

Veterans Day may have come and gone, but I don’t think it’s too late to join Tesla’s salute and extend our own gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has served and continues to serve the United States Armed Forces.

To every past and present member of the US Armed Forces, all of you risk your lives to protect our freedom and don’t ask anything in return. For that, we couldn’t be any more grateful. Thank you!

Exterior

Together with aftermarket company SS Customs, Tesla turned this particular Model S->ke3329 into a showpiece tribute to the military. The electric sedan was the recipient of a special army camouflage wrap with matching military-inspired graphics, like the army star on the two front doors and a unique interpretation of the U.S. flag on the rear fender. SS Customs also fitted the Model S with yellow-tinted headlights, alloy wheels with their own camouflage finish, and a custom roof rack carrying military equipment.

Interior

There doesn't appear to be any interior upgrades given to the Model S P85 Veterans Edition. So expect the standard premium cabin configuration that's dominated by a 17-inch infotainment screen taking up the entire center stack.

Another new interior feature of the 2015 Model S is Autopilot technology, a semi-autonomous driving system that makes use of optical cameras and a 360-degree sonar. The system’s hardware is automatically included in the Model S but you’re going to need to buy the Tech Package to be able to maximize the system to its fullest capabilities. The Tech Package costs $4,250.

A Tesla Model S dressed in army camouflage and driving semi-autonomously will surely invite a lot of attention.

Drivetrain

The Tesla Model S P85 Veterans Edition is based on the rear-wheel drive Model S Performance with the 85 kWh battery pack. This model has a total output of 470 horsepower, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds to go with a top speed of 130 mph.

Prices

The Tesla Model S P85 retails for $93,400 before the $7,500 federal tax incentive. In case you haven't noticed, the Model S doesn't come cheap.

Conclusion

It's an awesome gesture by Tesla, although it shouldn't really come as a surprise for a company that has championed community service as one of its most important corporate initiatives.

Tesla’s salute to the military is a responsibility the company continues to take seriously. Remember, back in July 2014, Tesla VP of Human Resources, Arnnon Geshuri, told the San Jose Mercury News that the company wants to become a top employer for American veterans.

That's a position the automaker didn't have to take but did. Kudos to Tesla for being aware of all the sacrifices the men and women of the US Armed Forces continue to make to protect our freedom.
