Have you ever wondered how the aftermarket tuning works for EVs? You don’t have much stuff in the powertrain that you can play around with. These machines are so different that a power boost can be done via an over-the-air update. There aren’t a lot of companies who have worked on electric cars yet.

However, a company called RevoZport, has laid its hands on the Tesla Model 3 Performance and experimented with what can be done. The result is an electric car with supercar-like aerodynamics that makes it a hoot-and-a-half to drive. Not to mention, it also looks sporty with those body kits. Do you think aerodynamics will play a big part in customizing an electric car for performance?

Electric cars have come a long way in the past decade, but they are still in the infancy stage. However, there are almost two million EVs in the U.S. alone and that’s not a small number by any means. This includes enthusiasts as well who will get bored with their silent cars sooner or later. See where I’m going with this? One of the best ways to keep a car interesting is by making mods to it, especially under the hood. But tuning options are limited for electric cars. There isn’t a lot you can do in terms of physical components, like fiddling with the exhaust system, or transmission, or the engine components, or just getting your hands dirty.

Companies like Tesla are introducing track modes and the likes, and offering tire and wheel upgrades as optional accessories.

One such company has figured a way around and started making the moves already. R-Zentric, RevoZport’s electric performance ancillary, has introduced an aero package for the Model 3 that focuses on attaining a high downforce without compromising heavily on the range and losing out on the straight-line performance.

Maintaining The Range While Increasing The Performance Is Key

Most EV owners suffer from range anxiety and that would be the first conflict they would have before making any mods to the car. The Hong Kong-based tuner has focused on the same and made sure the range doesn’t get affected drastically. This is also precisely why most of the EVs built today are so well-sorted in terms of aerodynamics. It’s safe to say that Tesla has nailed it in this department with its current crop of cars, including the Model 3. The Model 3 boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.23 which, according to the company, is the lowest for any car on earth. Even the Model S has the same rating. The air intakes in the right places, the spoiler lip on the hood, and so on, play a big role in keeping this number low.

There Are A Lot Of Active Aero Bits All-Around

R-Zentric has equipped the Model 3 with active and non-active aero enhancements. Firstly, there are active front splitters. They move in and out underneath the bumper to either increase the downforce and keep the car planted, or to reduce the drag. Like the company mentioned, this depends on the driver’s inputs. Apart from this, there’s a huge carbon-fiber diffuser that consolidates an active panel. The diffuser limits the drag when the flap is up and adds downforce when the flap is deployed. It works in tandem with the diffuser in the front to maintain a steady balance throughout. Being a carbon fiber unit, it is lightweight.

All the active bits are controlled by an optional G-force sensor. R-Zentric says that the suite of goodies that feature in the kit can adapt to the driver’s behavior. If you floor the A-pedal, the aero components will adjust for maximum downforce and the wings and spoilers will retract to ensure a minimum drag performance and keep the range from deteriorating drastically.

Carbon Fiber Non-Active Parts Add To Aesthetics As Well

As for the non-active aero parts, R-Zentric has a lot of stuff to offer. The stock hood is swapped for one made of lightweight material. The tuner has borrowed the fenders from its other kit, the Model 3R Evolution, and plonked it here. There’s a carbon-fiber ducktail spoiler integrated into the trunk lid. The trunk lid is also made up of carbon-fiber. Tesla offers ‘aero wheels’ on the Model 3, but the tuner has decided to make use of its own set. This Model 3 Performance comes with new forged, three-piece 21-inch Revozport wheels wrapped around Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber. These super low-profile tires measure 285/25 at the front and 305/25 at the rear. The wide track tires make sure the Model 3 sticks to the tarmac like a leech.

The model also comes with two different body paint schemes. One has a bright color on the shades of magenta with a black roof, black window sills, and the funky black wheels. Then there’s a black and orange theme which looks too gimmicky, but I love it. The graphics and the hue palette make it stand out without looking cringy. It’s also reminiscent of Han’s Mazda RX-7 from Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Final Thoughts

R-Zentric has priced the kit at $8,900. With a few optional accessories, the price goes up to $9,900. Considering that the price is just for an aero kit, it seems a little on the higher side. However, the kit is making sure the car is engaging to drive and feels better around the corners without compromising on range. On that note, we are yet to receive the estimated range figures with the aero kit equipped.
