Video: Try keeping this Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak race car off the grass

Video: Try keeping this Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak race car off the grass

Imagine yourself driving a car that can launch off of a stand-still position and hit 60 mph in just 1.6 seconds yet is only geared to do 132 mph. You can’t imagine it, can you?

Well, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and this is living proof of that. ’This’, of course, is this car. It looks like a Toyota Tacoma, only it’s not. Built using a chrome-molly tubular space frame chassis that’s covered in a carbon fiber body, this car actually has some ridiculous power under its hood in the form of a 2.1-liter, four-cylinder, turbo-charged engine that produces around 1,000 horsepower. But as we’ve said, it’s top speed - 132 mph - isn’t really something you can brag about.

And just to show you how incredibly difficult this race car/truck is to drive, check out the video of the car being driven by Rod Millen - yeah, he’s the proud daddy of Rhys Millen - at the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed and watch how he can’t seem to fully corral it from going into the grass and do all that twitching. And this guy is a seasoned pro. Imagine if it was somebody who had the equivalent driving skills of an everyday Joe.

Toyota and General Motors end 25-year partnership

Toyota and General Motors end 25-year partnership

Just when Toyota opened its doors to a new partner in Aston Martin, it closed another door on a 25-year partnership with General Motors.

With news circulating that the Japanese auto giant and Aston Martin have forged a partnership together to produce Toyota’s iQ car in the UK under the Aston Martin brand, it came as a surprise to a lot of people when General Motors announced that it would discontinue its relationship and forego its ownership stake in the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) partnership the Detroit-based automaker created with Toyota 25 years ago.

GM’s announcement came on the heels of its decision to completely drop the Pontiac brand from its roster of cars – a decision that has virtually made the Nummi plant in Fremont California, where the Pontiac Vibe was being produced, meaningless to GM.
