This is one Toyota Tundra that was built to thrive in the elements

A unique Toyota Tundra showed up at the 2018 SEMA Auto Show with Kevin Costner’s imprints all over it. The Hollywood A-lister hooked up with Toyota to build a custom Tundra Platinum that embraces Costner’s love for adventure and the outdoors. The one-off, custom-built creation is the ultimate adventure truck, fitting for a man whose famous for his love of the outdoors. They don’t make them as rough and tough as Kevin Costner; turns out, Toyota — and Working Complete Customs of McKinney, Texas — was up to the task of giving him a ride that suits his personality.

What makes the Toyota Tundra by Kevin Costner special

Kevin Costner is famous for a lot of things. He’s an acting legend, an underrated singer, and a well-established philanthropist. He also happens to be a legitimate outdoorsman, uprooting his family from California and settling down in a rustic 165-acre Aspen, Colorado ranch, complete with three rivers crossing his property.

So when it came time to buy a pickup truck that can keep up with Costner’s go-anywhere attitude, the actor called Toyota.

“I was delighted to get a call from Kevin asking if we were interested in collaborating with some video content featuring the Tundra,” said Ed Laukes, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “Kevin is an avid outdoorsman and is very particular about the equipment he uses. The fact that he identified the Tundra as being the best truck to fit his needs says a lot about our products.”

To be clear, this is less about touting Toyota and its products and more about what Costner wanted from his Tundra truck. With the help of Texas-based Complete Customs, Costner envisioned the kind of truck he wanted, setting the stage for one of the most comprehensive Tundra creations you’ll ever see.

Exterior

Starting with the exterior, Costner and Complete Customs didn’t waste time putting the actor’s vision for his truck to life. New front and rear bumpers were installed. These aren’t your typical bumpers, too. They’re created from heavy-gauge steel and integrated with heavy-duty Warn winches and LED lighting bars and accents from Rigid Industries.

Up top, there’s a new two-piece roof rack that extends over the Tundra’s cab, providing enough storage for all of Costner’s outdoor adventuring necessities.

The rack is also affixed to an ARE Series Truck Cap that encloses the bed of the truck. Down low, Costner’s Tundra sits on a set of 18-inch Method Race wheels wrapped in massive 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. N-Fab side steps that run the length of the cab are also part of the custom creation.

Interior

The interior of Costner’s Tundra offers a blend of comfort, safety, and utility. There’s a pair of Lock’er Down security safes, one located at the center console and another under the rear seats. The front-seat headrests come with TV monitors and over at the bed, there’s a padded sleeping area for Costner’s children and a Dometic dual-one cooler for cold storage.

Drivetrain

No upgrades were made to the Tundra Platinum’s 5.7-liter V-8 engine.

It still produces 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, which are still decent numbers for a vehicle that’s not going to burn up drag strips and race tracks in the first place.

It will likely post slower acceleration times, too, on account of all the extra weight it’s carrying, but again, this Tundra is built to go anywhere, even if it isn’t the first to get there. On the bright side, Complete Customs didn’t completely ignore the Tundra’s mechanicals because Costner probably wouldn’t have it any other way. The Texas-based tuner installed a 4.5-inch BDS suspension lift with Fox coilovers and shocks and a TRD exhaust system for good measure.

Final Thoughts

The result speaks for itself.

This is the kind of custom Toyota Tundra you’d want to have on your side when you’re traveling on your next adventure.

Unfortunately, it’s not for sale. Kevin Costner owns this beast of the outdoors, and you’ll probably have to fight him to take it away from him. Fortunately, there is a way to get one for yourself. All you need to do is buy a Toyota Tundra, hook up with Complete Customs, and ask to get — we think — the “Costner Package.” That may or not work, still, but at least you tried.

Appearing at Toyota’s 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show display, Kevin Costner’s custom Tundra Platinum is a truck that was built to conquer the great outdoors.

The Tundra has been outfitted with an array of custom equipment to tailor its use to Mr. Costner’s passion for nature and active outdoor lifestyle. The project fabrication and assembly were performed by Complete Customs of McKinney, Texas.

“Kevin was involved with the project from start to finish,” said Complete Customs owner and chief builder Shaun Freilich. “He had some drawings that he drew personally to convey his concept. I made some renderings based on his ideas, and then we flew out to his home to meet him and work out the final details.”

To enhance the Tundra’s utility and off-road capability, rugged new front and rear bumpers were fabricated from heavy-gauge steel. Both units integrate heavy-duty Warn winches and LED lighting bars and accents from Rigid Industries.

A new two-piece roof rack was designed, fabricated and affixed to the ARE V Series Truck Cap that encloses the bed. The rack extends over the Tundra’s cab and provides plenty of storage for all the necessities for outdoor adventuring, from jerry cans to camping supplies.

Additional upgrades include a TRD exhaust, 4.5-inch BDS suspension lift with Fox coilovers and shocks, 18-inch Method Race wheels with burly 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires, and N-Fab side steps that run the length of the cab. The interior was outfitted with a pair of Lock’er Down security safes, one under the rear seats and one at the center console, and the bed has been furnished with a Dometic dual-zone cooler for cold storage.

Along with supporting the actor’s personal adventures, the Tundra was also built to suit his family and includes TV monitors in the front-seat headrests and a padded sleeping area for the kids.

“He knew exactly what he wanted,” Freilich said. “He made it challenging, but it was also a blessing. Some guys will just throw crazy ideas at you and expect you to make it happen, but he was willing to work closely with us to make his vision a reality.”

Even prior to its showing at SEMA the Tundra has been put through its paces, towing Mr. Costner’s boat on fishing excursions at his Colorado ranch and accompanying him to on-location filming for Season Two of “Yellowstone” in Montana.

Kevin Costner’s custom Toyota Tundra—along with other Toyota specialty vehicles—can be found in the Toyota display booth (#24800) in Central Hall and on the Patio Annex of the Las Vegas Convention Center, October 30 - November 2, 2018.
