Special edition Supras are beginning to show up

The A90-generation Toyota Supra is now more than a year old, which means its time to expect some updates to roll out for the sports coupe. To its credit, Toyota is wasting little time getting that ball rolling with the arrival of the special edition Supra Horizon Blue Edition. Based specifically on the RZ trim of the sports coupe — it’s a JDM model — the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition arrives with a steady diet of new and exclusive features, none more obvious than the splashy Horizon Blue paint finish. The Toyota GR Supra RZ Horizon Edition is limited to just 100 units, all of which are earmarked for the Japanese market.

The Toyota GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition is a special edition model that’s based on the updated version of the Toyota Supra RZ trim that’s available in Japan.

It’s common practice for a lot of automakers to roll out special edition models, including times after significant updates are made to a specific model. That’s the case here with the arrival of the new Supra RZ in Japan. The short follow-up to that is the special edition GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition.

Exterior

  • Exclusive Horizon Blue paint finish
  • Set of 19-inch forged aluminum wheels in matte black paint

From a visual standpoint, it’s clear as day what makes the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition special. The special edition Supra RZ wears a fancy Horizon Blue paint finish. It’s the first time that we get to see the Supra sporting this color, and, at the very least, it is a treat to the eyes. The shade of blue Toyota used blends naturally into the Supra’s body, creating an impressive visual that underscores the Supra’s aggressive design qualities. If the color already looks familiar, it’s because we’ve seen it on the Supra before, specifically on the virtual Supra that’s been added to the roster of cars in Gran Turismo Sport.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to exclusively shine the spotlight on the paint finish. Other parts have also been upgraded, or at least, in this case, replaced with something more on the exclusive side of things. The Supra’s wheels, in particular, are no longer of the stock variety. Toyota replaced them with a set of 19-inch forged aluminum wheels that are finished in matte black paint.

The rest of the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition’s exterior comes in stock form.

Interior

  • Genuine leather and Alcantara used on the seats
  • Horizon Blue contrast stitching on various areas of the interior

Is there anything noteworthy inside the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition?

With the aesthetic theme already established, it comes as no surprise that the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition’s interior is dressed appropriately with vivid blue accents that come in the form of contrast stitching to the interior’s predominantly black visual. The stitching can be seen in various parts of the interior, including the seats, central arrest, door trim, instrument panel, and the steering wheel.

The seats are worth mentioning, too.

The seats are made from a combination of genuine leather and Alcantara, adding another layer of refinement that you normally don’t see in a car of the Supra’s orientation.

Powertrain

  • Improved 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine nets more power
  • From 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque to 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque
  • 0 to 60 mph time improves to 3.9 seconds
  • New front brace in place to improve rigidity
  • Suspension updates
  • Gains weight to 3,373 pounds (1,529 kilos)

What Updates did Toyota Make to the Supra RZ?

The big update in the Supra RZ revolves around a power bump out of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine that Toyota has in place under the hood of the Supra RZ.

Whereas the engine produced 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque when the Supra was launched in 2019, Toyota’s engine update adds an extra 47 horsepower into the mix.

This effectively pushed the turbocharged inline-six engine’s output to 382 horsepower. Torque numbers, on the other hand, remain at 369 pound-feet of torque. The new Supra RZ also gains 22 pounds by virtue of other updates, bringing its total weight up to 3,373 pounds. Ironically, the Supra’s weight gain doesn’t compromise the car’s performance capabilities. With the added power in tow, the new Supra RZ actually improves its sprint-to-60-mph time from 4.1 seconds to 3.9 seconds.

Is the New and Improved Engine Available in the Toyota GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition?

Yes, the new and improved 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine is available to the special edition Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition.

What other Upgrades to the new Supra RZ are included in the GR Supra RZ Horizon Blue Edition?

It bears mentioning that the updated engine is not the only important update that you’ll find in the special edition Supra. In addition to the bump in power, Toyota also added a front brace to increase the rigidity of the Supra’s body. That’s an important update considering the significant power gains from the updated version of the Supra’s BMW-sourced turbocharged inline-six engine. Likewise, the sports coupe’s suspension benefits from a smattering of updates that should improve cornering and control in tight spots.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More
