The 2020 Toyota Ornamental Conifer GR Supra is a customized version of the Japanese coupe designed for the 2020 SEMA Show. Now converted to the SEMA360 Showcase online presentation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will debut four special-edition Toyota models, including this GR Supra. Essentially an art car, the Ornamental Conifer GR Supra was designed by British artist Nicolai Sclater.

What makes the Toyota Ornamental Conifer GR Supra special?

A SEMA project based on the Toyota Supra should be about aero upgrades and a more powerful engine, but this one is simply about a bespoke livery.

But it’s not just any livery. It’s created by British artist Nicolai Sclater, also know as Ornamental Conifer, and it’s a tribute to the lost art of sign painting and automobile graphics. It’s not as fancy as an art car, but the fact that everything you see on the stock Turbulence Gray body was hand-painted is cool enough. But it also features letters that look as if they are 3D and black detailing on the front and rear fascia that mimic a mesh grille.

“Nico’s creativity and skills are over the top, and simply amazing,” said Ed Laukes, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “What he created in the Ornamental Conifer GR Supra is pure art. To think he did this and all the accompanying artwork by hand blows me away, especially in an era where digitally printed vinyl wraps are the rage. I’m looking forward to hearing what automotive enthusiasts and Supra fans think of this project.”

The livery features two main captions, including "lightning response," a tribute to the Supra's sportiness, and "true to form," which is supposed to be a nod to past and present Supra models.

It also includes a few sponsor-like motifs, so the Ornamental Conifer wouldn’t look out of place on a racing grid.

But that’s all there is to this SEMA project. Everything else remains unchanged, so there are no cabin upgrades to talk about. The same goes for the engine. This car is a 3.0 Premium trim, so it’s powered by the range-topping, 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The BMW-sourced turbo unit cranks out a solid 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s definitely quick enough for the race-inspired livery.

Toyota today unveiled the Ornamental Conifer GR Supra, one of four reveals in the company’s 2020 SEMA360 Showcase presentation. Unlike most performance and customization debuts, the Ornamental Conifer GR Supra is a hand-painted work of art created by Ornamental Conifer, the moniker for British artist Nicolai Sclater.

The SEMA360 Builder Showcase, Nov, 2-6, 2020, is SEMA’s online program connecting the automotive aftermarket industry in a year that makes the traditional in-person SEMA Show impossible. Toyota is using a two-wave reveal plan with four SEMA360 debuts starting today, and others breaking cover during wave two in the coming weeks.

To create the Ornamental Conifer GR Supra, Sclater started with a beautiful canvas, a 2021 GR Supra 3.0 Premium in Turbulence Gray. Finding inspiration by imagining what motivates and drives enthusiasts to customize their GR Supra sports cars, he conceptualized a design featuring bold graphics and expressions like ‘True to Form’ and ‘Lightning Response’ as nods to past and present Supra attributes.

Working exclusively with enamel paint and brushes, Sclater meticulously hand painted every letterform and graphic, resulting in an eye-catching creation that pays tribute to the lost art of sign painting and automobile graphics while remaining fresh and contemporary.

Sclater and Race Service also plan to roll out limited-edition artwork and complimentary items such as shirts, key chains, air fresheners, water bottles, tote bags, and more sometime soon.
