The Toyota bZ4x electric crossover concept made its global debut a couple of months back. Now the automaker has revealed it in the U.S. The bZ4x is roughly the size of the RAV4 and will be launched in the production form later this year. The company hasn’t revealed a whole lot of details about it yet, but did mention that it will come with an all-wheel-drive configuration, which means it could have a dual-motor setup. The all-electric crossover will go on sale from early 2022.

How Is The bZ4X On The Outside?

This is just a concept for now, so we won’t dive deep into the design elements. It looks sharp from all angles and comes with a raked windshield at the rear. The concept doesn’t seem to wear the fancy aero wheels you see on EVs these days. That said, the production-spec crossover will probably be a slightly toned-down version of this, but largely similar to what you see.

Lisa Materazzo, Group Vice President of Toyota Marketing, said, . The long wheelbase suggests it will be much more spacious than the RAV4 on the inside.

How Is The bZ4X On The Inside?

The bZ4x surprisingly looks like a conventional car from the inside. Usually, you see EVs with a ‘minimalist' theme and huge screens on the dash. But, that's not the case here. The digital instrument cluster sits in a sweet housing, deep in the dash.

The touchscreen comes with a lot of buttons around it, which isn’t what you generally see in electric vehicles these days. Overall, it looks to be quite spacious and we don’t see a reason why the production-spec model won’t be either.

The bZ4X Is The First Vehicle In The bZ lineup

Toyota has kicked off its ‘Beyond Zero’ series with the bZ4x. The automaker plans to have 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, seven of which will come under the bZ lineup. The seven models are said to be BZ1, BZ2, BZ2X, BZ3, BZ4, BZ4X, and BZ5. The models carrying the ‘X’ suffix denote an all-wheel-drive layout, and in extension, a dual-motor setup.

The bZ4X Is Jointly Developed With Subaru

Subaru teased an electric SUV ‘developed with Toyota’ last month called the ‘Solterra’. Perhaps, that could be it. The bZ4x is underpinned on a BEV-dedicated e-TNGA platform. There’s no word on the specs yet, but it is an all-wheel-drive model, which suggests a dual-motor setup.

The bZ4x will most likely square up against the likes of the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y. So, it should have an EPA-estimated range of over 300 miles even in its worst form to leave a mark. In their most efficient avatars, the Ford Mustang Mach-E offers 305 miles and the Model Y offers 326 miles.

How Much Will The bZ4X Cost?

It’s too soon to say since it is still a concept and we don’t have much information, but we speculate a starting price of a little over $40,000.

When Will The bZ4x Arrive?

The Toyota bZ4x will go on sale sometime in 2022.

Final Thoughts

To step into the EV market with a mid-size crossover is a smart move. The fact that the RAV4 was the automaker’s best-seller in the U.S. last year might have played a role to get a similar-sized vehicle before others.
