The GR Supra gets a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo engine and less fat on its hips

LISTEN 05:14

We all know an love - well, not all - the A90 Supra and its 3-liter inline-six mill which, yes, comes from BMW, the co-developer of the Supra-Z4 project.

One year after the Supra’s unveil, Toyota decided to come up with a lighter, cheaper, and presumably equally fun version that’s animated by a four-cylinder mill. Turbocharging is still on the table, as well as a lighter platform for even nippier on-road behavior, despite the natural drop in power. Here’s all you need to know about the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 2.0.

Supra 2.0 - Powertrain

We’ll start with what’s under the hood for obvious reasons. The new engine available for the Toyota GR Supra dictates a lot of the car’s new personality. It also makes for a drop in weight compared to the Supra 3.0 and most importantly, a significant drop in price without the cost of less performance and dynamism. At least that’s what Toyota tells us.

In hard numbers, the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine (a re-tuned variant of BMW's B48 unit) harbored under the hood of the 2021 Supra 2.0 is good for 255 horsepower unlocked in the 5000-6000 rpm interval and 295 pound-feet of torque available from as low as 1550 rpm all the way up to 4400 rpm.

Compared to the Supra 3.0’s inline-six mill (382 horses, 368 pound-feet), the 2.0 lacks some firepower - 127 horses and 73 pound-feet of twist - but compensates through a lighter build. We’ll get to that later.

In the Supra 2.0, the new mill connects to the same ZF-sourced, eight-speed automatic transmission found in the Supra 3.0. Toyota says the duo can propel the rear-wheel-driven sports car from naught to 60 mph in five seconds flat. Top speed remains electronically-limited at 155 mph, while fuel consumption is expected to drop - at the time of writing, Toyota wasn’t offering any figures to support the claim.

Don’t be fooled by the lower power output compared to the Supra 3.0. BMW’s B84 engine is a potent one and on top of it, Toyota pulled another trick. BMW Blog reports that due to its smaller size, the 2.0-liter engine now sits all the way in the back of the engine bay, so far that it is positioned behind the center line of the front axle.

Technically, the Supra 2.0 is a front-mid-engined sports car, which benefits in the handling and road composure department.

Naturally, dampers and suspension settings had to be changed to new parameters.

What’s more, the Japanese carmaker fitted the Supra 2.0 with smaller front brake rotors (330mm x 24mm versus 348mm x 32mm). Single-piston calipers replaced the four-piston units in the 3.0 and you won’t find an active diff as standard in the 2.0 (you can get it with the Sport Pack, though) just like you won’t find an adaptive suspension setup - both offered in the larger-engine Supra.

All in all, Toyota says the 2.0 can be up to 100 kilos (pounds) lighter than the Supra 3.0 while retaining the 50/50 front-rear weight distribution ratio.

In the cabin, the seats are manually adjustable, as opposed to the 3.0’s 14-way adjustable ones. The Supra also comes with a 10-speaker sound system, while the 2.0 only gets a four-speaker setup as standard. And that’s where the differences end.

The same can be said about the exterior, where the only way to set apart a Supra 2.0 from the 3.0 is to look at the wheels (2.0’s are 18 inchers) and the exhaust - the 2.0 flaunts a chrome finish instead of the 3.0’s brush stainless steel.

Size-wise, the Supra 2.0 and 3.0 have equal wheelbases, lengths, and widths: 97.2 inches, 172.5 inches and 73 inches. The 2.0 is taller than the 3.0, though (51.1 inches as opposed to 50.9 inches). What’s more, it also sits 0.2 inches higher off the asphalt thanks to a ground clearance of 4.7 inches.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read full bio
