Toyota has been quite busy in the last few days. The automaker unveiled the new GR86, a carbon-fiber Supra, debuted the Corolla Cross, introduced the refreshed Tacoma TRD Pro, and even brought the bZ4x concept to our shores. Apart from all this, Toyota also introduced a new TRD Sport model to the 2022 4Runner’s lineup. If you want something that has more off-road vibes and street cred than the regular trims but not something as full-blown off-roader as the TRD Pro trim, then the TRD Sport will fit your bill.

What’s Special About The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport’s Exterior?

The TRD Off-Road and the TRD Pro trims are more about off-road capabilities. We wouldn’t call it just an exterior package since it comes with a lot of differences under the skin, too. Toyota also noted that all the 200 4Runner trims will be offered with LED headlamps and fog lamps as standard.

It comes with 20-inch wheels with Dark Gray accents. The other differentiating factors on the outside include color-keyed accents on the grille, rocker panels, and body molding. It even comes with the signature TRD-style hood scoop, front spoiler, and black roof rails. It would’ve been nice to have a new exterior shade as well, just like how TRD Pro models will be available with the Electric Lime Metallic shade from now on. Finally, a full-sized spare tire will also be offered as standard on this trim.

What’s New Inside The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport’s Interior?

On the inside, the TRD Sport comes with black SofTex-trimmed seats instead of the cloth seats like on the SR5. They feature TRD logos embroidered in gray. The trim also comes with heated front seats. Complementing the dark theme are the TRD Sport floor mats and the standard TRD shift knob. The SUV also features an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

The TRD Sport offers 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Flip them down and you’ll have 89.7 cubic feet of space available at your disposal. It doesn’t look like the 4Runner TRD Sport will be offered with a third row.

What Powers The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport?

Power is routed to the wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. You can have it with either a two-wheel-drive or a four-wheel-drive system.

The SUV will be offered with a two-wheel-drive layout or a part-time four-wheel-drive system. The two-wheel-drive models will come with Automatic Limited-Slip Differential as standard. The part-time four-wheel-drive TRD Sport models feature an Active Traction Control and a two-speed transfer case with low range. The two-wheel-drive models, by the way, sit nine inches off the ground whereas the four-wheel-drive models sit 0.6 inches higher.

As for the towing capabilities, just like the other trims, the TRD Sport will also include a standard integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness that can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds with a maximum of 500-pound tongue weight.

The 4Runner TRD Sport Features A Different Suspension Setup

The 4Runner TRD Sport’s highlight is the sport-tuned X-REAS suspension setup that makes it smoother on the tarmac. This is present on the Limited trim, too. It stands for Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System that automatically adjusts the damping force of shock absorbers when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering.

Given that the 4Runner is a body-on-frame construction, the ride is not the smoothest out there. This helps iron out the wrinkles to a certain extent when it comes to on-road handling dynamics. As Toyota puts it, ‘it features a center control absorber that cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, like an “X,” to help reduce pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs’.

How Much Does The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport Cost?

There’s no word on the pricing of this trim yet, but it should slot between the base SR5 and the Limited trim, thus dictating a price of under $45,000.
