A crucial next-gen update for Toyota’s CUV icon

Originally arriving in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is one of the Japanese brand’s older nameplates, especially within the crossover segment. In the quarter century since the debut of the original RAV4, demand for crossovers has grown substantially, and sales of the compact Toyota have grown with it, eventually becoming the Japanese brand’s number-one seller in the U.S. However, the RAV4 last got a redesign in 2013, so to keep it fresh, Toyota just pulled the sheets on a new fifth-generation at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, bringing updated exterior styling, a redesigned interior, the latest safety tech, and a new architecture under the skin.

2020 Toyota Yaris Unveiled With Modernized Infotainment

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 7.0-inch touchscreen all as standard

Toyota just revealed the 2020 Yaris sub-compact five-door, offering up new styling paried with automatic LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a large grille design. Under the skin, the Yaris is remarkably similar to the Mazda2, while up front, there’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making as much as 106 horsepower. The four-banger is mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, while fuel returns are rated at 40 mpg on the highway.

Two will offer trim levels on launch, including the LE and the XLE. Standard spec includes s low-speed pre-collision safety system and active safety system, as well as infotainment goodies like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth support, and voice recognition. Running it all is a 7.0-inch touchscreen, while two USB ports and six-speaker audio round it out.

The Yaris is once again tiny, with an overall length of 161.6 inches, which is about the same size as the Honda Fit. However, the Yaris is still quite practical thanks to 15.9 cubic-feet of trunk space.

Look for the 2020 Toyota Yaris at the New York Auto Show later this month. Pricing is so far unannounced, but is expected to slot in at $17,000.

The Toyota Yaris (alternatively known as the Echo) first arrived in 1999, but it didn’t head stateside until 2007, with a second generation debuting for the 2012 model year. Framed as an entry-level subcompact, Toyota says the latest refreshed model seeks to combine “efficiency, fun, comfort, and safety all at a reasonable price.” Previously titled the Yaris iA, the four-door is now simply called the Yaris sedan, and it brings a charming attitude and a decent list of equipment for a reasonable price tag.

The Toyota FT-4X Is a Cool Toolbox on Wheels

We might be looking at the second-gen FJ Cruiser here!

When it discontinued the FJ Cruiser in early 2014, Toyota killed off the only vehicle that was somewhat reminiscent of the original Land Cruiser/FJ40. Now that the FJ Cruiser is gone, Toyota is pondering a new retro-style SUV, and it just unveiled a concept vehicle at the 2017 New York Auto Show. Although the Japanese firm didn’t say whether a production model is in the books, the FT-4X concept is proof that Toyota still has second thoughts about dropping the FJ Cruiser.

Granted, the FJ Cruiser was pretty boxy for mid-2000 standards, but the FT-4X concept takes the idea to a new level. It’s rather difficult to find rounded areas on this crossover, but that’s far from surprising given that Toyota designers likely took inspiration from the Land Cruiser of the 1960s. The roof reminds me a bit of the Kia Soul (or even the now defunct Scion xA), but other than that, the FT-4X is a nice mix of old and modern styling cues. While the roof is a big square with a 45-degree windshield, the sculpted side skirts and front fenders give it a fresh and unique look. The front end and the wide, almost separate wheel arches have a Wrangler-esque vibe, but the X-shaped fascia and bumper section make it as original as they get.

The big wheels, a common feature for concept cars, suggest excellent off-road capability. Toyota says the concept uses a mechanical four-wheel drive system with a selectable low-range and a MacPherson suspension, so it’s safe to assume that this toolbox on wheels can tackle dusty and snowy trails.

Inside, the FT-4X is an advanced, modern vehicle. The driver and front passenger area has a simple, practical layout. The dash is essentially a storage area with a floating glove box, while both door panels include fancy looking water bottles. The steering wheel is also simple and straightforward, while the traditional instrument cluster was replaced by a small screen. The low dashboard also offers tremendous visibility up front. Behind the front seats, the FT-4X can provide seating for three adults or a flat loading area with loads of space for hauling stuff around or a long trip to the great outdoors.

The SUV is equipped with all the tech you need on vacation too. There are USB outlets, a ceiling-mounted removable flashlight, air vents that can warm and dry clothing, GPS, and a removable audio system. Just in case you want to throw that beach party you’ve been dreaming of in your high-school years. Should you get cold, there’s a sleeping bag between the front seats.
