Battle Of The Midsize Pickup Trucks: Toyota Hilux Takes On the VW Amarok In a Drag Race

Battle Of The Midsize Pickup Trucks: Toyota Hilux Takes On the VW Amarok In a Drag Race

Carwow pits the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok against each other in a drag race, and the result will probably surprise you.

A drag race between two stock midsize pickup trucks is about as scientific as a drift competition with shopping carts. Pickup truck buyers are rarely interested in the performance aspect of these vehicles, but Carwow still gives us the answer to a question we never thought of asking – which is the quicker pickup truck. This time it’s the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok that line up for a quarter-mile drag and despite the two vehicles being very similar on paper, the outcome is quite decisive.

Toyota’s Latest Teaser Includes Evidence That the Tundra Will Be a hybrid

It looks like the 2022 Toyota Tundra will rock out a hybrid powertrain, maybe across the entire lineup

Toyota continues teasing the new Tundra and this time we may have some hints about the engine options. We recently saw the debut of the latest Toyota Land Cruiser 300-Series, which gives us a good idea of what engines we can expect to find in the new Tundra, as the two have shared a lot of their powertrains in the past. We know that the full-size pick-up truck will make good use of Toyota’s new-generation iForce engines, but what exactly does this mean for the engine options?

What’s the best way to get someone’s attention? Scream? I guess that’s what Toyota thinks because it just launched an off-road trim of a pickup truck in a bright lime shade! Neither ‘Off-road’ nor ‘pickup truck’ can be associated with a lime exterior shade. But, Toyota seems to have done that with the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro.

The 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro arrives in this new exclusive shade with some more off-road enhancements like an increased suspension lift, new shocks, etc. Sweet, huh?

When you hear Toyota, some of the first words to come to mind are reliable, boring, hybrid, or if you’re into the 4X4 scene – rugged. The Toyota Land Cruiser is, to this day, one of the most iconic 4X4s out there. What most people don’t know is that there is a bigger “Cruiser”, made by Toyota – the Toyota Mega Cruiser. Chris O’Neil is an enthusiast YouTube channel, named after its creator, in which “he does stuff with interesting vehicles”. In this case, he gives a detailed overview of the obscure boxy SUV.

The truck segment is prepping for electrification at an unimaginable pace, courtesy of specialist EV companies like Tesla and Rivian. Mainstream car brands are also throwing their hats in the ring (like they have any other option!), and the latest one to do so is Toyota. The automaker confirmed that the company is planning to electrify its truck lineup. This is the first time the Japanese automaker has spoken about pickup truck electrification. There’s no word on which truck gets the ion shot first, but whichever it is, expect it to come sooner than expected.

2020 Toyota Hilux

2020 Toyota Hilux

New looks, a new top-trim, and an improved engine under the hood make the new Hilux a better proposition than it already is

After teasers, leaks, and getting Fernando Alonso to drive the Hilux, Toyota has finally unveiled the 2020 Toyota Hilux. The truck has been launched in Europe, where the pickup truck segment is picking pace. The truck has a long history and enough credibility to make it one of the segment’s top picks. But, with growing competition, Toyota, too, had to bow down to the pressure and deliver the best it could. So, for this updated model, the Japanese automaker has introduced a new front end, better tech features and, most importantly, a more powerful 2.8-liter engine. How about that!

The Toyota Tundra is known for its rock-solid reliability. It’s also strong, well-built, a competent hauler, and tough enough to be taken off the roads as well. But, it looks like this owner was not happy with the Bruce Banner version of his Tundra and decided to transform it into Hulk.

This Three-Axle Toyota Tacoma TRD Is Too Crazy To Describe

We’d normally dismiss such an oddity but this is just too bonkers not to like

If you happen to follow the car world’s digital illustrators, you know it’s a wild, wild world out there on our screens. Guys like Khyzyl Saleem and Ash Thorp can turn any jalopy into a hot-as-chilli restomod, and the same can be said about Jon Sibal.

Specifically, Jon came up with a re-tweak of one of his original works - a widebody Toyota Tacoma design - where he basically added a third axle to the whole thing, which now sits on not four, but six ‘meaty wheels’ as the artist calls them.

Here's Your First Look at the 2021 Toyota Hilux

Here’s Your First Look at the 2021 Toyota Hilux

These are supposedly just the renderings and the real deal will be slightly less pronounced

The Toyota Hilux is a compact pickup truck sold by the Japanese Automaker in many markets worldwide. The moniker was introduced back in 1968 and continues to run successfully to date. It was sold in the States when it was introduced, but the company pulled it out after eight years in 1976 and replaced it with the rather generic “Truck” badge. We do have its twin here sold since 1995, called the Tacoma.

The Hilux is presently in its eighth-generation that was launched in 2017. While the next-gen Hilux is expected to arrive in 2023, a mid-cycle refresh was on the cards for later this year. However, a website called Milele Motors has published images of the 2021 Hilux, although CarAdvice mentions that these could just be renderings based on the Hilux facelift.

The Ranger Raptor will be in deep trouble if Toyota actually goes ahead with this

Remember when Toyota said it would make high-performance trims of every model it builds? Looks like Toyota was serious about it. Interestingly, the Japanese automaker announced this in a reply to a twitter user who suggested a Hilux GRMN.

Fast forward 13 months and Toyota has announced a GR Hilux that will go up against the Ranger Raptor. The truck will feature a new diesel V-6 mill that will churn out over 250 horses. How exciting is that?

You Won’t Believe What Lurks Under the Hood of This Toyota Hilux

It sounds great and makes for a perfect sleeper truck

Well, here’s a Mercedes X-Class pickup truck with an older 6.2-liter Mercedes-AMG mill plonked under the hood. Oh, wait, I’m sorry. It’s a Toyota Hilux with an AMG engine. I wonder why I thought the X-Class pickup truck with an AMG engine would’ve been a good idea. Duh! The X-Class was better off as a rich man’s Nissan Navara with the same interior and drivetrain, right? Anyway, here’s one genius who plonked the previous-gen 6.2-liter AMG mill under the hood of his Toyota Hilux. The result? A sleeper truck that will scare the living daylight out of you with one press of the throttle.

Toyota Teases New Tacoma Trims for The 2020 Chicago Auto Show

Other “sport and outdoorsy” trucks and trims expected to be revealed, too

The Chicago Auto Show is all set to kick off on February 6, and Toyota has already created some buzz about it. The Japanese automaker teased an image of a front passenger-side lower fascia that appears to be the Tacoma’s. Toyota coupled this pic with a statement that read, “sporty and outdoorsy, with a touch of nocturnal mischief.”

At the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, Toyota unveiled the 2020 Tacoma. In all likelihood, Toyota will use this year’s show to focus primarily on off-road stuff. All this indicates a new off-road trim for the Tacoma. Wait, just one off-road trim, or many more?
