Toyota Shines the Spotlight on Paralympic Athlete in Super Bowl Ad

Great things can be achieved no matter the obstacles

Instead of touting its new products, Toyota is taking a different approach with its Super Bowl LV commercial. The automaker is releasing a 60-second commercial, called Upstream, and featuring Jessica Long, an American swimmer who is the most decorated Paralympians in U.S. history. The ad touches on Long’s incredible journey from when she was adopted by an American couple from an orphanage in Siberia despite a rare medical condition that resulted in her legs getting amputated to becoming one of the greatest paralympic swimmers in history.

Toyota’s Pinball-Themed Ad for the Supra is A Nice Symmetry to How the Sports Car Has Been Received

If the Supra handles as good as it does in this commercial, then it shouldn’t have any problems winning over the critics

The all-new Toyota Supra took center stage at Super Bowl LIII as the star of its own commercial. The 60-second ad, titled “Wizard,” features the Supra driving around what Toyota describes as a life-sized pinball machine as The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” blares in the background. Unlike the snoozefest that was the Super Bowl, the ad presented the Supra in a new and exciting light. The car can flat-out move, which is fitting considering that it probably dodged more obstacles than the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams players did in the first half of the game. More than that, the commercial also provided a nice symmetry on the mixed public reaction towards the new Supra. If for nothing else, Toyota’s returning sports car proves that it can dodge criticism as deftly as Julian Edelman dodges the Rams defenders.

The Best and Worst Car Commercials From Super Bowl LIII

From pinball machines to social media drops, this year’s crop of car commercials had everything

Super Bowl LIII has come and gone, and with it came a smattering of car commercials from some of the biggest automakers in the world. Let’s get it out of the way off the bat. This was a weird year for car commercials in the Super Bowl in part because most of the commercials actually didn’t air during the game. Sure, there were a handful of ads from Toyota, Kia, Audi, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz, but most of the ads actually ended up on YouTube instead of our TVs. Perhaps it was a way for automakers to save $5 million or so on these TV ads, but if you really want check out all the commercials that these car companies made for the big game, YouTube was the place to be. As for the commercials that actually made the air, well, let’s just say that this wasn’t a particularly impressive year for these ads. There were high spots, but we’re not going remember any of them the way we remember Volkswagen’s Little Darth Vader ad or Chrysler’s tribute to Detroit, featuring Eminem. Those are iconic commercials that are still talked about to this day. As far as this year’s ads go? Let’s hope we can remember one of them in a month’s time.

As if the world isn’t getting any football with the Super Bowl already, Harris’ involvement in Toyota’s RAV4 HV commercial could shine the spotlight on both the SUV and her remarkable journey to become the first woman to receive a college football scholarship offer for a non-kicking position. The 60-second commercial will run at the end of the second quarter of Super Bowl LIII, just before the halftime show.

Toyota took a hiatus from the frenzy last year, but it’s back with a vengeance this year with a pair of 60-second commercials. For its part, Lexus is also in on the fun with its own commercial that will have ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
