With the leak of the first picture of the all-new 2020 Toyota Supra A90, we are finally getting a proper look at the most anticipated Japanese car in years. While the photography posted on the SupraMKV.com forum does not do enough justice to the new car, one thing is certain - Toyota’s designers and its administration are courageous. Designers created a car that looks a lot like the Toyota FT-1 Concept from four years ago, and all the key people in bureaucracy offices said yes to it. Considering the fact that Toyota basically signed BMW to develop a whole new car, it is only logical to make a fast visual comparison between the new 2020 Toyota Supra A90 and the 2019 BMW Z4. While both of these do have basically the same drivetrain, their exterior visage seems to be completely different. Heck, one is a coupe, the other - a roadster.

Front

Unfortunately, we only have one picture of the new Toyota Supra A90. But I think it will be enough for a front end comparison between these two. Of course, I will supplement the article once we have official pics.

After all, both of these cars have to follow a strict path their predecessors have set forth. Heck, I think that it would be easier for the Z4 to completely reimagine its lineup than for the Toyota Supra. However, exactly the opposite has happened. The new BMW Z4 seems to be a proper successor to the model that was introduced in 2009.

On the other hand, the Supra feels like it is the one to change its market location. Looking at both of these cars, one must admire the conviction of the designers to make them different. And they are different. Despite the fact that the new Supra will actually be shorter, with a shorter wheelbase compared to its predecessor, I find it strikingly familiar. I mean, even if I did not know this is the new Supra, I think I would assume it is.

Design trickery of the front end includes a different approach to design. No one can convince me that Toyota did not want to create the nose of the new Supra in such a way that it’s reminiscent of the nose on certain Formula 1 cars. I like it personally. Added vents on the sides, winglets above the (I believe) carbon splitter, and the front lights really similar to that of the FT-1 Concept all seal the deal on the rather remarkable front end of the new Supra.

The kidney grille is really large. So much so, in fact, that for the first time in the world of BMW, two lights inside the housings sit one above another. It does not look bad at all, but I am a bit sad that BMW broke its tradition. And that with the Z car. While certainly striking, the BMW Z4 front end does not express the same character that the Supra does. It is mean, of course, but mean for the streets. The Supra front end is almost pretentious. It looks for trouble. The Z4 front does not.

Moving a bit back, the Supra is gifted with the awesome double bubble roof. BMW is, as you know, a roadster. However, it does have blacked out A-pillars. Just like the new Supra.

Rear-view mirrors

Today, we finally saw the rear view mirror of the new Supra. When I saw the title about it on the Internet, I hoped that it will be completely different from the one on the Z4. Alas, that was not the case. I mean, it is a carbon copy of it.

Nevertheless, you may well be the one to own the first-ever Toyota Supra. The auction will be held at the at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday, January 19, 2019. The first Toyota Supra on American soil will be the one with the VIN 20201. All the proceeds from the sale go to the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
