“Cross” stands for versatile concepts

SUV and MPV. The acronym SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) refers to a considerably more “well-mannered” version of the traditional off-road vehicle. The CrossGolf embodies the stamina and toughness of this vehicle type in its body and modified chassis. MPV means Multi Purpose Vehicle and refers to a van. The CrossGolf with its variable and spacious interior also bridges to this segment. Within its class the CrossGolf has no direct competitors.

Powerful image. In its exterior design the CrossGolf exhibits features evocative of the SUV world. Continuous wrap-around cladding in anthracite color, a silver-colored roof rail and newly designed bumpers and radiator air inlets give it an impressive look. The CrossGolf has large 17-inch wheels, and its body is set 20 millimeters higher. The exclusive new color “Ice Silver Metallic” is available as an option.

“Cross” stands for cleverly crafted interiors

Individual interior. The interior of the CrossGolf too offers a fresh, contrast-rich color world. The materials and colors of seat covers, door trim and silver-metallic cockpit components were developed especially for the new model. A three-spoke leather steering wheel, pedal caps in aluminum look and the “Climatic” climate control system round out the generous lineup of standard equipment.

Clever ideas. The CrossGolf with front wheel drive is based on the Golf Plus Sportline. It too is distinguished by practical details such as folding tables on armrests of the standard front sport seats with storage bins underneath. The rear bench seat is split for variable folding and has longitudinal adjustment. When its center section is folded down, a table surface is created. Depending on the bench configuration the cargo volume of the trunk area behind the large rear hatch ranges between 395 and 505 liters. When the seatbacks are folded down as much as 1,450 liters cargo space is provided.

Feeling of expansive space. The feeling of space generated in the CrossGolf is evocative of a compact SUV. Compared to the “clas¬sic” Golf the front passengers sit 9.5 centimeters higher, and 10.5 centimeters higher in the rear. The CrossGolf gives passengers comfortable entry and exit via its four doors. Head room and foot room are generous in both front and rear seating.

Powerful technology

Two gasoline and two diesel engines. Volkswagen is offering the CrossGolf in two gasoline and two diesel engine variants. The two diesels are equipped with a particulate filter. The entry-level gasoline engine delivers 75 kW / 102 HP, and the base TDI engine develops 77 kW / 105 HP. The top gasoline and diesel engine variants have identical power output: The TSI and the 2.0 TDI each deliver a powerful 103 kW / 140 HP. The view of the TSI is particularly intriguing. Thanks to twin charging by supercharger and turbocharger this direct injection gasoline engine exhibits exceptionally high torque and an agile engine characteristic. At the same time it demonstrates exceptional fuel economy. The TSI and either of the TDIs can be ordered with DSG dual clutch transmission as an option.

Highest level of safety. Like all Golf cars the CrossGolf also has the ESP electronic stabilization program together with counter-steering function and trailer stabilization, ABS and brake assist on board. Six airbags are also included as standard equipment.

 Key Aspects

The new CrossGolf brings together the best of two worlds. Based on the Golf Plus, the new variant of the world’s bestseller combines the charm of a compact SUV with the practical versatility of a MPV.

-----

Design and dimensions

The new CrossGolf forges a bridge between two vehicle segments. In the style of a SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) its body and chassis reflect robust toughness. Simultaneously, the car offers a spacious and variable interior approaching that of a MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle), in this case a compact van.

Both of these vehicle segments are in demand: In 2006 over 480,000 compact SUVs and nearly 1.4 million com¬pact MPVs were sold in Europe. Its innovative crossover character puts the CrossGolf in an exceptional position without immediate competitors. Its design was drawn up by Volkswagen Individual, the company’s internal division for refinement and special vehicles.

Visually the CrossGolf makes it unmistakably clear that it is an offspring of the Golf family of cars. Nonetheless, numerous changes distinguish the exterior design from the Golf Plus. The body is set 20 millimeters higher. In side view the sporty 17-inch diameter wheels attract the onlooker; mounted on these wheels are wide 225/45 size tires. The standard roof rail is painted in silver color (“brilliant chrome”) and can handle up to 75 kilograms load. The new exclusive “Ice Silver Metallic” is offered as an optional body paint color.

The cladding of the lower body area contrasts with these glistening, bright components. In the version with high-grade anthracite colored plastic ¬it integrates the side bumper areas, wheel arches, rocker panels and lower door edges. The cladding protects against stone impact in light off-road duty, while the color contrasting side strips on the doors protect the CrossGolf from being dented by doors of neighboring parked cars in the asphalt jungle. Appearing on the rear doors above these strips is a “CrossGolf” emblem.

At the front end a newly designed bumper outlines the standard fog lamps and air inlets whose positions and design were slightly modified – they impart a powerful look to the car. The middle area of the bumper has a visual shape similar to that of the under-ride protection, its sweep takes on the contour of the engine hood. At the rear end too the stylized under-ride protection emphasizes the powerful image of the new CrossGolf. As in the Golf Plus, LEDs are arranged on the outer perimeters of the tail lights. They serve as tail, brake and turn signal lights and exhibit quick reaction times and long life. The hazard flashers are activated automatically when the brakes are applied forcefully.

Compared to the Golf Plus the CrossGolf measures a few centimeters larger in all dimensions. Nonetheless the new Cross model remains compact and uncomplicated. Its length is 423.3 centimeters (+ 2.3) and its width 177.6 centimeters (+ 1.6). Because of its higher ground clearance and roof rail its height has grown to 165.1 centimeters (+ 3.1).

Interior and cargo space

In keeping with its origins the new CrossGolf also has a spacious and variable interior. The instrument panel is built relatively high, and compared to the classic Golf the passengers sit 9.5 centimeters higher in front, referenced to the road, and 10.5 centimeters higher in the rear. This lends a feeling of open space with comfortable entry and excellent visibility. The luxurious interior height of 100.7 centimeters (97.6 centimeters in the rear) reinforces this perception. Thanks to its 258 centimeter long wheelbase the CrossGolf offers generous leg room in both front and rear.

The rear bench seat of the new CrossGolf is longitudinally adjustable. Depending on the configuration of the rear bench seat the cargo space varies between 395 and 505 liters.

Additionally, the bench can be split into two segments that are independently adjustable by up to 16 centimeters. Furthermore, the middle seatback can be folded down separately, creating a pass-through, and it can be used as a table surface. As an alternative, the car can be ordered with a storage compartment and multifunctional box in the center.

Seatback angles are adjustable over several stages. When they are folded down completely – during this process the seat cushions are automatically shifted a bit downward and forward – up to 1,450 liters of cargo space is made available. In combination with the optional fold-down front passenger seatback the usable interior cargo length grows to 2.30 meters.

The cargo bed of the trunk area can also be used flexibly: When it is raised to the higher of two possible levels it creates a nearly flat cargo surface and an additional, lower storage compartment. If necessary the cargo bed may also be completely removed. The low trunk sill (68.8 centimeters on empty vehicle) and high opening hatch (height above ground: 2,099 millimeters) combine to make loading easier (Cargo capacity: More than 600 kilograms). There is also a 230 Volt power outlet in the rear seating area.

Cockpit and equipment features

Just like the exterior, the interior of the CrossGolf also exhibits a color environment that is rich in contrasts. The so-called interior trim, i.e. the interior colors and materials, was specially developed for the new model.

The center panels of the seats all feature a waffled fabric called “Profile Stone”. They also contrast the side panels in color. The seatbacks of the driver and front passenger seats have folding tables and storage pockets. Under the seats there are practical storage bins; overall there are abundant stowing options. Door coverings have fabric lined interior panels that are color coordinated with the seats. Alcantara and leather are also offered as seat cover options. In front the CrossGolf has standard sport seats that precisely support and position the body. They are height-adjustable and are also equipped with 2-way lumbar supports.

The cockpit of the new CrossGolf offers the same ideal ergonomic features as in its counterpart, the Golf Plus. Visually the cockpit is accentuated by silver metallic components. The eight round air vents have circular rings in “Ice Silver Metallic”. Standard equipment here includes a three-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather cover and seams that retain the “Ice Silver” color as well as metal clasps in the same color. Leather also covers the gearshift knob and parking brake handle.

The CrossGolf drives off the assembly line with standard electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors, four electric windowlifts and a multifunction display. Other special features include a special graphic insert in the gearshift knob (with manual transmission), door tread plate “CrossGolf” decals, pedals in a robust aluminum look and floor mats with color contrasting border. Standard equipment also includes the Climatic – a semi-automatic climate control system. Available as an option is the fully automatic Climatronic with 2-zone control.

Safety features of the new CrossGolf include six airbags on board (front airbags, side airbags and head airbags); rear side bags can be ordered as an option. The front seats have crash-optimized head restraints and pyrotechnic belt tensioners with integrated force limiters (the latter also in the rear if optional rear side airbags are selected). In addition to its five three-point belt restraints and head restraints, Isofix child seat mounting fixtures are provided at the outer rear seating positions. If young passengers are traveling in special child seats in the front, the front passenger airbag can be deactivated.

Most other options are based on features offered on the Golf Plus Sportline. These include a multifunctional leather steering wheel, iPod capability, DVD system for the rear seats, various audio and navigation systems, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, acoustic parking pilot and bi-xenon headlamps with curve lighting.

Drivetrain and chassis

Volkswagen offers two gasoline and two diesel engine options on the new CrossGolf. All engines satisfy the Euro-4 emissions standard, and the two diesel engines are equipped with particulate filters. The most powerful gasoline and strongest diesel engines are each paired with six-speed gearboxes. All CrossGolf cars have front wheel drive.

1.6 with 75 kW / 102 HP

The base engine of the CrossGolf is a 1.6 liter four cylinder that delivers 75 kW / 102 HP. It attains its maximum 148 Newton-meter torque at 3,800 rpm. The gasoline engine consumes 7.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on average. Shifted with a five-speed gearbox the CrossGolf, weighing in at about 1,300 kilograms, reaches a top speed of 173 km/h. It completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds.

TSI with 103 kW / 140 HP

The twin charger puts out 103 kW / 140 HP – it generates this power from just 1.4 liters engine displacement thanks to direct injection and twin charging by turbocharger and supercharger. Just as impressive is the 220 Newton-meter torque that is continuously available from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. The TSI accelerates the CrossGolf to 100 km/h in just 9.5 seconds; its top speed is 195 km/h. This contrasts with average fuel consumption of just 7.3 liters per 100 km. The TSI is shifted via a standard 6-speed gearbox or optional automatic shifting dual clutch transmission (DSG).

1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 HP

The entry-level diesel is the 1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 HP; it delivers its 250 Newton-meter torque at 1,900 rpm. As standard equipment the 1.9 TDI is paired with a 5-speed gearbox. It can be paired with the dual clutch transmission as an option. The manually shifted CrossGolf 1.9 TDI reaches a top speed of 176 km/h, accelerates to 100 km/h in 12.1 seconds and consumes just 5.6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers on average.

2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 HP

Impressive power and low fuel consumption – these key aspects characterize the 2.0 TDI. It delivers 103 kW / 140 HP (at 4,000 rpm) and develops 320 Newton-meter torque (between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm). The 16-valve engine is shifted via a 6-speed or optional DSG transmission. In its 2.0 TDI variant the new CrossGolf reaches a top speed of 195 km/h and handles the sprint to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds. On average the diesel engine consumes a low 5.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

Either of the TDI engines or the TSI may, as described, be paired with the sporty dual clutch transmission (DSG). This combines the comfort of an automatic transmission with the agility and economy of a manual gearbox. In parallel to its automatic mode, the DSG has a Tiptronic function that enables manual shifting. Both operating modes give the driver a shifting experience that is extremely driver-friendly and its lightning-quick gear shifts provide for driving fun like in a sports car.

The CrossGolf makes use of the innovative off-road chassis with 20 millimeters additional ground clearance that is also available on certain other Golf models. A suspension strut design is used for front wheel suspension, while a four-link rear suspension operates in the rear. It sets new standards in its class, because the system unifies dynamic handling with maximum driving stability and excellent ride comfort. No less innovative is the CrossGolf’s steering system. The electromechanical power steering system varies its assist force depending on vehicle speed, and its functionality makes a significant contribution to full, quiet directional stability; the steering system even corrects for cross-wind effects.

In the CrossGolf the chassis is specially tuned. The wheels emphasize its sporty character – 225/45 tires are mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels here. Backing up all four wheels are large disk brakes; the front brakes have internal ventilation. Like all Golf cars the CrossGolf has the ESP electronic stabilization program on board with counter-steering function and trailer stabilization.
