While we all swoon over the fastest and most powerful supercars on the planet, a market segment that’s becoming increasingly popular among car enthusiasts is that of the hot hatchback variety.

Despite not having the aesthetic styling of more touted sports cars, hot hatches have been given one that thing was only previously exclusive to sporties: high-powered engines. Add that to the growing fascination aftermarket companies have given to hatchbacks and it doesn’t seem surprising anymore that cars like the Volkswagen Golf R are being given some pretty sweet performance upticks, one of which, was done by MR Car Design.

INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR

Since MR Car Design specifically focused on giving the Golf R a performance boost, not much was made in the way of exterior and interior upgrades, although the tuning company did give the tuned-up hatchback a new set of rims in the form of a set of 8x19-inch rims in a 10-spoke design that’s wrapped in 235/35-19-tires.

PERFORMANCE

MR Car Design made sure that the Golf R would be packing more punch than its standard variety by giving it quite an upgrade in the performance department. From a standard 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 270 horsepower, MR Car Design upped the specs by giving it a number of new materials including a custom downpipe, a high-performance exhaust system, an ECU remap, and a modified intercooler. Add that to a new TSI engine that produces 330 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque and you’ve got fast little Volkswagen->ke94 hatch whose name completely belies the surprisingly powerful upgrade.

PRICING

MR Car Design is giving the Golf R performance package a sticker price of €699, or a little under $1,000 based on current exchange rates.

COMPETITION

The list of “competition” for the Volkswagen Golf runs like a grocery list of someone who forgot to head to the supermarket for a few months. Having said that, some of the Golf’s more direct competitors – hot hatches that are aftermarket favorites – include the Ford Focus RS, the Audi A1, and the Renault Megane RS.
