There is something about the Volkswagen Scirocco that makes it really desirable, especially after the release of the third-generation model. Of course, this desirability doesn’t do much for those of us here in the U.S., as we’re not privileged enough for it to cross the pond – at least not yet. Even with the debut of the new generation happening just last year, Volkswagen->ke94 felt it was necessary to extend the desirability of the Scirocco->ke1517 even further with the release of two special-edition->ke2041 models.

As the name implies, the Scirocco Black Edition and Scirocco GT Black Edition, both have a focus on black accenting – a feature that really adds to the appeal of the already sporty sports coupe. Exterior features like the headlights and LED taillights from the standard Scirocco models remain, while the interior still benefits from the auxiliary instrument cluster and Composition Media system.

Now that both Black Edition Sciroccos are available for ordering in the U.K., let’s take a deeper look at them and see just what makes them so special.

What makes the Volkswagen Scirocco Black Edition special

To start off, both Black Edition models are fitted with the standard fascia’s and visual design queues of their respective trim levels. Black-painted alloy wheels and 90 percent tinted windows come standard on both models. A black painted contrast roof, rear spoiler, and door mirrors all pull the exterior together. As you can see from the picture, the black accents in addition to the sporty design and silver paint just jump out at you and say “we’re meant to be together.” The GT Black Edition trim is fitted with 18-inch Black Lisbon alloy wheels, and the R-Line edition gets 19-inch Black Lugano alloy wheels.

Four different engines are available in the GT and R-Line Black Editions, as well as two different transmissions. There are two gasoline engines and two diesel engines. On the low end, there is the 1.4-liter, gasoline-powered four-cylinder that puts out 125 PS (123 horsepower.) The other gasoline-powered option is a 2.0-liter that puts out 180 PS (177.5 horsepower.) On the diesel end of things are two 2.0-liter engines that pump out 150 PS (148 horsepower) or 180 PS. The 1.4-liter, gasoline engine is only available with a six-speed manual transmission, while the other three engines have the option of upgrading to a six-speed DSG transmission. 0-to-62 mph times range from 9.3 seconds for the 1.4-liter gasoline engine down to 5.5 seconds for the rang-topping 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel engines.

Now, all of this might not seem like much for special-edition versions of the Scirocco GT and R-line rims, but you have to look at the whole picture. Take into consideration the pricing of one special edition model. The GT Black Edition with the 1.4-liter diesel hits the bank for £23,135, which is £550 more that the non-Black Edition GT and R-Line Trims. Just adding the 18-inch Lisbon allow wheels to either standard model will set you back £610, and the 90 percent tint, another £70. That means going for either special edition can save you some cheddar if you’re looking to get the upgraded wheels and tint, plus you get the black accenting.

Volkswagen Scirocco

The Scirocco hit shows rooms for the 2014 model year. All trim levels feature things like a 6.5-inch touch screen infotainment system, adjustable sports seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. R-line models include a specific, sporty body kit. On the inside, R-line models received a different steering wheel, handbrake and gear shift as well has carbon-look dash inserts and heated seats. R models include lower sport suspension, headlight washers, and gloss Black interior trim inserts. Altogether, the Scirocco is one of the best looking vehicles in VW’s lineup, regardless of trim. It’s a shame it isn’t available here in the U.S.
